Astonishing X-Men

Issue #46

Written by Greg Pak, Art by Mike McKone

Published: March 2012

Curiouser and curiouser said Alice. Greg Pak really jumps down the rabbit hole in this rather interesting book. The cover was a little misleading as most readers were probably thinking, “WTF?” seeing Cyclops and Storm lip-locked. It was a little bit of a curveball because in this issue our X-Men end up in an alternate reality.

The nice thing about an alternate reality is that a writer can do almost anything he wants with characters. You can have cowboy Wolverine or the kid Nightcrawler and it is fine for ‘that universe’. But at the same time you have to be careful not to just get plain silly with the tone of the whole book. But Greg has a specific goal in his story that he keeps working towards that is different and believable so it does keep you interested while reading.

Mike McKone does some solid artwork. I have to say given the way the story went it must have been really fun to be an artist on this book. There was a lot of action and it took some good versatility by him in creating some of the alternative looks that all came out so well. The characters come out very detailed and smooth.

So the final vote is a solid 8 out of 10 for this issue. I liked it and though it was some solid overall work by everyone involved. It is a little odd or different but that is good now and again to spice up a long running series with a little something different. I can’t wait for the next book!
