Deadpool

Issue #50

Written by Daniel Way, Art by Carlo Barberi

Published: April 2012

After the waste of time known as issue 49.1 we finally get to the big 5-0! Spoiler alert, just because it says DEAD on the cover doesn’t mean much in comic land. In a sense it is foreshadowing possible futures. Wade has finally found a weapon that can kill him, if he can track it down.

Daniel Way does a decent job of moving things along to explain all of this as well as how much Deadpool doesn’t want to live with a quick fluidity and then we get to the meat of the issue. But still, overall the story is a little weak or flat. There is just something missing. In general this book isn’t super funny and the action is rather ho-hum without much drive or drama going on.

I do like the involvement of so many other parties even though it can be a little confusing. Personally I have been a big fan of Hydra Bob so it is nice to see an appearance. Also Daken pops on by. Usually it is all Wade all the time and I think it is a good time to branch out a little. The art was good with Carlo Barberi and Walden Wong on the pencils and Dommo on ink. Everything was drawn in the standard Deadpool style which is a tall, long limbed look with huge muscles on the calves, shoulder, and back. I liked the regular contrast of the colors as well for a classic DP style.

So my final mark is 6.5 out of 10. I think there was wasted potential but perhaps Way can bring it round for a big close. I don’t know if this arc will end Way’s work on it or the series altogether so I will keep reading to find out!
