Just finished this arc and it was pretty good all the way through with a couple really great issues. It was certainly the most ambitious effort from Marvel up to this point. I give the whole arc somewhere around 4.5 stars.

You know you can go into the arc and rate it independently.

The Golden Age heroes seemed a bit shoehorned in here, but overall this was a decent arc. It was not what I was expecting, but it was satisfying.

The super heroes from the golden age, was a good touch. I loved the Blazing Skull a in my opinion a premise to the Ghost Rider. Also it was fun to see Rick save the day and become more powerful than all the super heroes combined, and to be honest I almost went back to FF#2 to make sure there were four cows instead of three at the end it was explained where it went.

Really great arc, it makes me almost forget the DD whining issues ;-)

i see that im a minority here, but i was kinda disapointed about this arc. maybe i had to high expectations? but this was nowhere near a 4,5 arc for me, more like 3,5 at the most.

Was a lot less "cosmic" then I thought it would be and kind of mediocre all over, but the first Neal Adams issue in this arc was the first 5-star issue in a long time.

well, i finally plunged into the kree skrull war and now i understand why it is so highly regarded. it was awesome. all of it. for me ranking up there with the dark phoenix saga. certainly the highest quality avengers story to date by far.

one of the issues i've had with the avengers is the transformation of hawkeye into goliath and it's been interesting to watch this thread knowing that hes getting ready to turn away from being goliath. good! we want hawkeye back! but hey! an interesting twist at the end. where is he?

This arc was solid all the way thru, but the ending was a little "deus ex machina" for me.

This was a fine finish to one the first epic storyline in the Avengers run. I liked how a small 'error' in FF#2 led to a big reveal at the finish of the arc.

Rick Jones presence probably reduces this entire arc's rating by 2 stars for me. He's so out of place and obnoxious. Goliath is a negative as well.

The arc was outstanding, brought down only by Rick Jones. Why Rick Jones, why.

I always did wonder what happened to that 4th skrull in ff2.

Art is inconsistent, Adams/Palmer magic is there, but not as stunning as some of their books. There are so many cameos it is impossible to keep track. This story is so all over the shop & attempts to tie up all the confusion is thwarted by a halfway poorly written RT script. I am not sure what to make of it, really (3-)

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:

Goliath won't be gone for long. The Avengers will find the 7 dragon balls and wish him back to life.

I loved them bringing back the golden age heroes. This was a great arc. I wasn't too annoyed with Rick Jones saving the universe, surprisingly. I guess as long as he doesn't talk too much he's somewhat tolerable.

Such a tease, having Jones only be dead for a few minutes. No, give us back Captain Marvel, and Rick can stay dead. I do like it that they made it clear that the power he unleashed was there for all humans, he's still not special.
I loved the arc, and I loved the end, where now we have no clue what happened to Clint. I mean the Earth is still there, so at the worst his fight was a tie. I don't want to have to wait for the follow up, but such is the way of the order, young grasshopper.

That Roy Thomas, what a fanboy. You can just see him loving the chance to bring his childhood heroes to life, and I like how Rick relates to these "old comic book characters" the same way Thomas would.

This arc feels like an important step in the evolution of the Avengers, as they become a team you'd look to to save the Earth from an alien invasion. Reminds me a bit of the old Kang stories, but even more epic.

  MattzLadd Says:
  2016-03-06 13:59:58
But why the Fourties heroes? Couldn't Rick have just conjured up images of the current Avengers teams who are actually related to this storyline, or the Hulk at the very least?

4 stars for Rick Jones conquering the universe!!!

Cover Me - Sweet cover of the old school heroes!!!

Credit Due - @MrRsBB: Are you talking about the art for this issue only? If so, John Buscema was the artist.

Basic Math - Ok, either it's really hard to count Skrulls, or Roy was having a bit of fun. Last issue Goliath dropped in on four Skrulls, and now it's just three!!!

Doormat - Poor Annihilus just can't catch a break!!

Splash - Another great image of the old school gang!!!

Fat Freddy's Cat - I seriously doubt Fury would know who the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers were!!

'Nuff Said - "This one's limp as last night's lasagne."-Curious Cap

Princess Anelle is sad on page 6 because her dad wants to kill the guy she just conceived a child with off panel. That child... Hulkling of the Young Avengers.

I was wondering where the fourth Skrull was from FF#2, turns out even the Skrulls don't want to have anything to do with Sue.

  Russ Says:
  2017-03-01 11:01:28
The empowering of Rick Jones was a weird twist to the arc, but it still worked out. By having him bring the Golden Age heroes to life, Roy was essentially living a fan boy's wet dream in this story. But I'll easily give him a pass here because this outstanding arc is one of his career crowning achievements.

Also, it wouldn't surprise me that the other twist, involving the 4th skrull from Fantastic Four #2, pretty much made him a legend in the comics field alone. That one was way out of nowhere, but done fantastically and logically.

So, overall the arc wasn't quite what I thought it would be. The Avengers didn't do too much in space or get directly involved in the main conflict between the Kree and the Skrulls. But since both had imperial aspirations for the Earth, which side would the Avengers had picked? I also liked the fact that the Supreme Intelligence is ambiguous as far as his stance on the existence of Earth.

5 stars. Kudos to everyone involved in this arc; this is the one that made the Marvel Universe what it is today. And I'll kinda miss Hawkeye as Goliath; he coulda used a few more lumps from the bad guys.

@Locust75: Good catch on Clint's Skrulls dropping from four to three in between issues. I'm about 70 percent certain Mr. Thomas did that intentionally as a callback to the original Skrulls from FF #2. I'm eager to see what continuity porn gets spun out of the change in years to come.

Rick Jones is now one of the most powerful individuals in the universe? I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I enjoyed all of the issues in this series, but I'm not sure how appropriate the title of the series arc is.
