Issue Review

RikerDonegal
   November 17, 2015
A Spider-Man/Human Torch story which has weak parts and very strong parts.
The opening (all the 'Let's Be Pals' stuff) is forced & unconvincing.
But once The Wizard, Sandman and Trapster get inside the Baxer Building things get interesting, with them clearly out of their depth.
6/10

Issue Synopsis

In need of a friend, Johnny Storm seeks out Spider-Man. However, the webslinger is not exactly amenable to a friendly chat and Johnny flies off in disgust.

The Wizard, the Trapster and the Sandman see Spider-Man swing past their window and the Wizard suggests that Spider-Man would make the perfect fourth member of the Frightful Four. He reveals that he has a plan to attack the Fantastic Four.

At the Baxter Building, Johnny is feeling sorry for himself. The buzzer sounds from the lobby and seeing that it is Spider-Man, Johnny takes the elevator down. When the elevator opens, the waiting Spider-Man strikes Johnny, knocking his to the ground. Itís then that Johnny spots the Sandman standing behind watching Spider-Man. Johnny and Spider-Man fight and Johnny is knocked unconscious.

Johnny wakes a short while later to find himself bound and encased in the Trapsterís paste, and the Frightful Four, now including Spider-Man in their ranks, in control of the FFís base. While the Wizard taps the Negative Zone, the Trapster and the Sandman bait Spider-Man, who is revealed to be in some sort of trace. The Wizard is taken by surprise when Annihilus appears in the entrance to the Negative Zone and he frantically attempts to cut the power to prevent Annihilus from breaking through. While all attention is on Annhilus, Johnny manages to free himself and uses his heat to put the Sandman out of action by turning him to quartz. The Wizard orders the entranced Spider-Man to deal with the Torch, but Johnny manages to free Spider-Man from his trance and together the two of them easily deal with the Trapster and the Wizard. Spider-Man cuts the power just in time to stop Annihilus breaking through. After another short tussle with the partially recovered Sandman itís all over. Spider-Man departs leaving the Torch to clean up the mess.

These team-ups have been very average so far. Just reminds me of old Strange Tales or something. Hopefully it'll improve.

The team up is not bad but the stories are a bit on the cheesy side

This was a fun little issue, nothing special though.

Wizard: "Only I have the brainpower to harness this negative energy!"
Annihilus: "Howdy"
Wizard: "Oh God no."

One of the funniest moments I can remember in the order so far.

Ol' Annihilus kind of dissipates like the wicked witch of the west. Another fun issue.

Annihilus is the funniest guy in the marvel universe. Anytime someone opens the door to negative zone he pops out like Jack-in-the-box. He's a little prankster.

Pretty good issue. The only problem I have is Sandman saying he owes Spidey a beating from Christmas. It could be the vodka talking, but didn't Spidey give him a present to give to his mom and allow him to escape? Sandman must have dimentia or something.

Man, Spidey's an absolute***to the Torch after he reaches out to him. Still a great issue, and I agree...it was hilarious when the Wizard dropped a load in his pants after Annihilus pops out.

I didn't have a problem with the way Spidey acted towards Torch, that's just the way they've interacted for a decade now. Plus by the time the story ends, they seemed to be on much friendlier grounds. Be interesting to see how that friendship develops from here. And really wasn't it nice to see Johnny get beat up by Spidey after he's been so annoying for the past little while?
Since when could people teleport via the viewscreen? Or for that matter, since when could Annihilus tell when someone was watching him on it. A lot of that stuff just came out of nowhere.

The Frightful Four are excessively weak here, probably to put more spotlight on the battle between Spidey and the Torch, but still.

The drunk at the beginning of the tale reminds me of Jim Lahey from Trailer Park Boys. So far I really like this series. 3 Stars!

2 stars for the Frightful Four once again being treated as a joke. They really could've been contenders if handled right! At this point the Enforcers, Terrible Trio, or even the Triumvirate of Terror would've had a better chance!!!

Three Sheets To The Wind - It would of been better if Johnny thought Nathanial was an old 40's superhero. And, tried to burn his beard off...

Roofie - Did I miss what the Frightful Four used to control Spidey with? It would've been nice if they said.

Police Squad - Spidey cutting the power reminded me of a Naked Gun movie where they're trying to stop a countdown on a nuclear bomb. After failing, they turn to run and Frank trips pulling the plug out of the socket saving the day!!!

'Nuff Said - "Your friend here was so busy gloating, he forgot to maintain his rigid control--!"-Spidey

Oh Paste Pot Pete, thinking you could take on Spidey. That's enjoyable in and of itself.

Once again, some good fun. I wonder if Marvel Team-Up originally decided to be a Spidey-Torch mag designed to concentrate on their friendship. While I like the interactions between the two, the book might have gotten stale pretty fast if that's what they stuck with. I'm glad it eventually branched out, but these Spidey-Torch stories are a joy to read, even if they're flawed.

Talk about being too smart for your own good: did it not occur to the Wizard to just pull the plug to keep Annihilus from crossing over? I guess he was just too busy trying to maintain bowel control after seeing him that he simply never thought about it. Wizard's not going to live down Spider-Man one-upping him in the genius department, even if the web-head's a science major.

And what @Locust75 said about the Frightful Four....they've never been the same since Medusa left.

3 stars. Again, just some goofy fun, nothing to be taken too seriously. Hope the series can keep this up.

Maybe Sandman is swearing vengeance because his mother didn't like Spidey's gift.

  - Nathaniel lost his chance to mate, I don't think penicillin would help the burning though

- Maybe if you weren't always a jerk you would have some friends Johnny

- 16:6 Torch is THAK-ed in the sac

- Jim Mooney can barely make Ross Andru anything but competent, I'd rather an artist be spectacularly bad than boring. The penciling equivalent of beige.

- I always felt team-up books suffered the most from the demands of continuity, they should be awesome one-shot stories but usually end up timid and hollow

- 1 star for the story, and extra star for the Wizard getting over his head

I enjoyed this more than the last team-up for some reason. Good to see Paste Pot Pete again. Love him dissing the Sandman and being all "Hey my terrible traps that never work on people will stop this otherwordly deity!"

I was a little confused by the Torch's captivity though. It took him ages to think "Hey, maybe using the only power I have a little bit might help me escape". And, surprise, surprise - it immediately worked.

I really don't like how Spidey is a huge jerk in every non-spidey title. Of course it's always that way to set up some kind of superhero misunderstanding just to have the terrible hero vs hero battles.

And the use of "Brain Boy" is getting out of control. They used it twice in this issue alone!
