Gil Kane really likes to draw the underside of people's noses, apparently.

Haha, oh man, Green Flame's comment is spot on. He really does draw a lot of them.

Still, in fairness to the guy he's pretty good at it.

The drawings of Gog are real nice, as for the sabe land with each new time it's visited it has a new tribe apearing out of the blue.

This was definitely not your usual Spider-Man story, but that might be what I liked about it. Good silly fun.

That panel of Jameson face to face with Zabu was worth a star all on its own.

  Spidey does Kong-gotta love it.

Kane's under the nose perspective is not my cup of joe. All of the art is substandard; inking is particularly unrefined. The script isn't too bad, surprisingly and the story, altho somewhat Hollywood is acceptably entertaining. (2)

I'm not impressed. It's a spider-man version of King Kong. Didn't marvel already do a King Kong rendition?

It's nice to occasionally get a Spidey story like this, especially since he doesn't do the whole jungle adventure bit that often.

Pete's a chauvinist for suggesting she not go, but as soon as Grew gets to the Savage land she puts on a bikini. Mixed messages on the feminism dealie guys.
Overall I enjoyed the tale, but what kind of cliffhanger is that? So what if your arms cant reach a branch, use your web-shooters.

On one hand I'm pleased they are finally willing to go outside of the box a bit on this title. While it was truly amazing how well they were able to stick to a certain specific type of story for 100 issues and keep the quality remarkably high, ASM was getting a bit stale. On the other hand, this is a pretty ridiculous story that just doesn't work.

Geez thanks a lot, now I can't stop looking at the noses!

Was the decline of papers really an issue in the early 70's?

3 stars for Spidey going from a urban jungle to a real jungle!!!

Print Is Dead - @phogbear: Hmmm, good question, I would say to some extent TV has been a slow death to print. Also, high inflation and a energy crisis would add to costs during that time.

Uptown Girl - Agree with g2thet about Gwen...MEOW!!! Also, her bikini must be a mood bikini. It changes color throughout the issue!!

Cajuns - @Wady: Ka-Zar calls them Swamp Men, but I agree, each time we see them they look different! Maybe numerous tribes loosely place under one grouping?

The More You Know - I had to look up Oliver J. Dragon...and now I wish that I didn't...

'Nuff Said - "That's the only monster we've got to lick. And, by Godfrey, we're going to lick it!"-J. Jonah Jameson, Monster Licker

They really don't get the whole women's lib movement. Every time someone is pulled up for anything sexist, they're a male chauvinist pig. Specifically a male chauvinist pig, not just a chauvinist or anything like that. Marvel has been more subtle in some of their worst issues on racism.

Recommended listening for this story: what else? "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns 'n' Roses. We got fun and games!

And a 'Nuff Said honorable mention: "Pete...wh-where are you dragging me?" --Gwen, already at home in the pre-historic setting.

Roy sure has been determined to put his own stamp on this series. Spidey faced a vampire over the previous two issues, now some goofy monster from the Journey-Into-Strange-Tales-of-Suspense-to-Astonish days of Marvel. The stories are working for the most part, but not really at the level we're accustomed to here. I'm keeping an open mind, though; but maybe I'm a little hypnotized by Gwen's bikini.

3 stars. JJJ doesn't need to worry; people will still buy newspapers for many years to come. Ever see someone line a birdcage with a T.V. set?

Though I enjoyed this more than most folks, I gotta admit that Mr. Thomas is struggling a bit with the pacing of the 25-page comic. This story *clearly* came to a stopping point with Ka-Zar's introduction, and the extra Spidey pages tacked on afterward were pointless. The "oh no, quicksand!" cliffhanger is especially cheap and manipulative.

All right! Enough of the complaints about how silly this story is. Remember how Stan left? Spider-Man had SIX ARMS! So this isn't even the silliest thing in the past six issues.

Until now, I never knew Ollie's full name. I just knew him from Kukla, Fran and Ollie when I was a kid. There's actually an old EC story where it turns out that Ollie was an alien symbiote who was controlling the guy who's arm he was on. Now that was a silly story.

However, back to this issue. Not bad even though Ka-Zar only shows up for a page.

Three Stars.

I've been thinking that early Daredevil, especially under Roy Thomas, sounds like a low budget Spider-Man. Spidey under Roy sounds like a low budget Daredevil. I hope he finds a good voice for Peter, and soon, because it's not working for me.

I'm also not wild about the art.

All this notwithstanding, I liked the issue overall. I like the Savage land, I like the change of pace for Spidey, and I'm looking forward to Ka-Zar v. Kraven
