ISSUE SYNOPSIS

This issue of Tales of Suspense ties directly with the first few issues of the X-Men comic book. In the starting pages, we find the Angel directly flying above Stark Industries, planning to take a shortcut through it, but unluckily for him, some atomic bomb test was going to take place there. Iron Man tries to warn him, but it’s too late, the explosion is detonated, Iron Man is logically not severely damaged, thanks to his armor, but the Angel, who was a little bit far away is affected by the radiation. No, he didn’t suffer any extra mutation or laceration, the radiaction in some way only affected his psyche, turning the once good Angel, “bad”.

After the explosion, Angel fights Iron Man away, and heads to the X-Men mansion, to announce them that he’s quitting and the he now plans to seek a career in evil. He fights his mates back and steals some dynamite to call the attention of crime bosses. Profesor X, with his infinite power and all, is still not able to infer the reason of Angel’s behaviour and seeks help of the Avengers to stop him before he falls into the hands of evil. Iron Man is the only Avenger on call, and been himself partly to blame for the whole situation, he decides to confront the Angel, with one of the dumbest solutions I’ve read in comics, putting himself in real life threathing peril, to activate the Angel’s psyche back into “the good side”, so that he saves his life. After all, it seems that radiation just has temporary effects upon mutants...

The other story included in this magazine is an interesting tale by Uatu, The Watcher, on how an alien civilization has been watching us, at first uninterested, but as history progressed, they began to see how fast we were developing, and started to be scared that we might one day rule the galaxy. They were alrady mayheming on ways to destroy us, but were relief to see we didn't help from any other race, we could do it all by ourselves.

Who's Uncle Stan trying to kid with that disclaimer about editors of X-Men and copyright holders of Avengers? haha

Would there even be a Marvel Universe without radiation? Hulk, Sandman, Spider-Man, Doc Ock, Cobra, Radioactive Man of course, even Puppet Master's clay, just to name a few. And now radiation can make Angel "a smarter, craftier, slyer person...a far more evil person?" Iron Man: "It's just as I feared! The explosion changed his personality...Made him cruel, merciless!" You feared that?

"Millionaire manufacturer Anthony Blake?" Did Marvel even have editors?

Would super genius Stark...uhh..I mean Blake...really call something a "doohickey?"

What I learned: The X-Men and Avengers are both "specially licensed crime fighting organizations."

Strange ... in Avengers #1 Rick Jones says the Hulk is Donald Blake ... and here Iron Man is given Blake's name ... Stan is making some kind of strange subconscious slip-up, maybe.

Ahh, who cares about Stark performing atomic tests near New York, if he is doing it, it has to be safe.

After Hulk and Sandma receiving the full blast from an atomic explosion, let's do it again, on a mutant now, who turns evil, and Iron Man has seen it coming, sure it's effect is predictable!!

The Angel really got a smart plan!

Wow, what a combo this 'Tales of the Watcher', never suspected such thing existed!!! Got many stars only for that!!

Aside from the remarkably ridiculous event setting up the plot for this issue, it was a solid, very readable, and even exciting story!

What an odd story. It's an enjoyable read, for the most part.

It's the classic crossover story, really. Hero meets hero. Hero fights hero. Hero saves/helps hero. Hero departs, now friends with hero. Hero.

Lastly, I don't know why, but this is the first Silver Age story I've read where I really wish it would have gotten an appearance in Busiek & Ross's Marvels series. I just feel like watching IM & Angel flying around would look AWESOME with the Marvels treatment.

The first half of this issue was unbearably cheesy, but the second half redeemed it slightly. And plus Steve Ditko art is a plus for me. So 3 stars it is.

This was just great. The Iron Man/Angel battle was fun, I liked how it was resolved, and it's always nice seeing the X-Men pop up. That Watcher story was heavy-handed but also good, and I like how it further expands the Marvel universe.

Yuck. What a stinker. I'm sorry, but the idea of radiation affecting someone's morality in such a clear-cut way is just stupid, as was Angel looking for some vague group of evil mutants when at the point this story takes place at, he would have not yet encountered any such group, only lone villains. There really isn't much to redeem this issue at all

@Phantaz: Spare yourself my friend. The Saga of the Sneepers is not worth reading. It's really not canon, it's only 5 pages long, and I'm sure it's only included because of the Watcher intro.

Erm, what can I say... In marvel land radiation does everything EXCEPT what it really would do, which is kill you horribly with either radiation sickness, or a slow lingering death by cancer.

I suppose it would make for a less interesting comic, but I would appreciate it if marvel stuck with gamma rays and cosmic rays, and then left radiation well alone!

Interesting issue, I'm liking the cross-overs I'm just wishing the writing was a little better. The repetitive dialogue is getting really old, very quickly (Angel/Stark both using the expression "Fly rings around you" and every character saying "Sonny boy"). Also, the small error of calling Tony, "Anthony Blake" *sigh*. I was slightly impressed that we almost made it through one issue of Iron Man without having to read the word "Transistor." oh well, maybe next time.

Angel is an interesting choice for an opponent in this issue. Angel's one ability so far as I can see at this point is his power of flight. So far, the Human Torch, Iron Man, The Wasp, the Sub-Mariner, and sometimes the Hulk and Ant-Man share that ability with him. It just seems like a random pick to me, but inconsequential all the same. I find it kind of funny that there wasn't a punch thrown between Iron Man and Angel though.

Angel did whoopa**versus the other X-Men. Also, I feel that this issue could have almost been found under that title, seeing as how much of the panels were shared with them.

It was real cool to see Ditko's rendition of the Avengers, even if it was only for one panel. Alas, it's Ditko's last Iron Man issue for a while. In retrospect, I really only saw his style really shine in the prior issue to this. The inkers really took some of his groove out of the art.

The Watcher appearance seems pretty watered down. Nice novelty, but I feel like it's just there to get us to read the extra pulp story, and it kind of grinds my gears that it works.

One star for evil Angel, who kicks way morea**than benevolent Angel. One star for Angel foiling Iron Man's magnet plan by escaping out the door right beside the magnetized one. Minus one star for Anthony Blake.
