Issue Review

RikerDonegal
   November 23, 2016
It's encouraging to see the series move away from the Mister Kline story, but this isn't great.
One of the main recurring characters is wildly out of character here - merely as a means to drive the story forward - although a possible explanation for his behaviour is put forward by Tony.
Everything else is rushed. Tony's company suddenly about to be taken from him AND students are protesting AND Guardsman joins the traitors AND students are killed. Too much, too fast.
4/10

According to the indicia, Iron Man has been demoted to bimonthly status.

Pure nonsense. They devised this sick soap opera plot to make a moron out of O'Brien, one of the coolest supporting characters in MU.

I really like how Tuska portrays Tony Stark.

Tuska has turned in pretty impressive art in this run and this book is the best so far. Colletta inks are also some of his best to date. We start continuing from last issue and this book feels like a cringeworthy romance book, but it gets better straight away! The story is reasonable and rather believable with a pretty good script.   This issue was actually much better than the previous ones. I'm surprised that IM went into a bimonthly publishing, that usually means the mag is about to be cancelled.

Jesus Christ, how many more Iron Man stories are there in this arc? I just want to read a different, better comic at this point.

And now Marianne is going to marry Stark? Of she is so worm food.
This was a better story for sure, but all of the elements that go in to it (O'Brien going bad, takeover at Stark Industries, kids protesting at the plant) all seemed to come out of nowhere.
At least IM didn't have any power issues this time out.

This issue would've been great if the issues leading up to this weren't so poorly written. Or if O'Brien's crush on Marianne was remotely earned. Same with Tony's, actually.

2 stars for the Guardsman making a play for Stark Industry and Stark's woman!!

Credit Due - Gary Friedrich wrote this issue and it definitely shows!!

Something More Comfortable - Marianne found time to change clothes between issues!!

Cheesecake - Nice view of Marianne lounging in her changing room!!

GQ - Poor Tony, his night ruined...and he was wearing his big ascot scarf too!!

'Rithmetic - Uh-oh, we got another counting error. First it was four protesters that were killed/hurt, and now it's three!!

Wrecking Ball - Iron Man's such a showoff! He couldn't of just came in the broken window that Kevin made, he had to break his own window!!

Tight Fit - They're using the ol' armor makes them crazy bit. Which they will use a lot in the future. I'm not sure, but I think it already happened to Happy or Eddie March...

Game Over - Well, it's a good thing Kevin didn't actually fight a real villain that might have hit his reset button!!!

'Nuff Said - "Stand back, ye blasted trouble-makers! This how Stark Industries deals with your kind!"-Groovy Guardsman

That wasn't a very good comic, but the fact that it was coherent and competently executed mark it as a massive improvement over the Conway issues preceding it.

So the good news is that someone FINALLY figured out that Tony Stark is Iron Man. The bad news is that she thinks heart seizures are a thing.

This is still a pretty bad story arc, but this issue is indeed a marked improvement over the last four. I can at least say this one was readable, even if it used a lot of elements we've already seen before.

Gilbert's your uhmm, Stark raving lunatic with delusions of grandeur. I wonder how he got voted onto the board in the first place if he had a reputation for stuff like this (pg 8 pn 5). If I were on the board, I might be enticed by a change at the top, but Gilbert wanting some kids dead doesn't make me want to support him; that's really really bad PR. And karma.

And I don't think the Mr. Kline story is quite yet done, but was a spoiler dropped about him? (pg 5 pn 6)

2 stars. Tony's armored toys making selfish jerks out of users not named Tony Stark? How is this guy still in business anyway?

Contrived as it is for Kevin to turn bad, I can't say I'm gonna miss that beardy orange stereotype. That dude couldn't be more generically Oirish if he was a leprechaun - a scenario I bet the Bullpen would have tried if they thought they could get away with it.

There's an old saying in comedy: "Drop the cow." It means, when you've told the joke, drop it and go on to something new. Mr. Klein and the Senatorial shenanigans were that cow.

However, they might have dropped the Senatorial but they've replaced it with Boardroom shenanigans. Aargh.

They've messed up Kevin, who was the best supporting character in this feature since Happy. However, I'm beginning to warm to Marianne.

Seriously, though: enough with the love triangles! ENOUGH!

Two Stars.

I can't figure out why Stan Lee would spoil the Death of Mr. Kline like that.

  JonahBlack Says:

I hate it when good ideas are spoiled by their execution. The three important plotlines here are all perfectly serviceable, if not good. Marianne as a love interest, the fall of Kevin O'Brian, and Stark's ouster all have legs, but most everything is rushed, and where it's not rushed, it buried under melodrama. I'll echo sentiments above that I'm glad we're done with Mr Kline.

  benmason486 Says:

Marianne in her undies is nice, but completely unnecessary to the story.

Simon, that is not how it works. You can't move up the vote just because you didn't get Tony's reaction to your telegraph.

Tony's getting married; and Kevin completely loses it. Because he couldn't see that as an outcome of dating Marianne.

This is slightly better than the ones before it, but only slightly.

Of course, the suit would effect Kevin's mind.

These kids are more proteges of Malcolm X, than of Martin Luther King, Jr.

  Marksman Says:
  2018-02-04 12:32:44
Why would Kevin have a framed picture of Marianne, who he just recently met?

So, if Tony's armors make people selfish jerks, why hasn't it affected Tony? Umm, never mind...
