Issue Review
   July 16, 2015
#203 resolves the ongoing storyline in Deus Ex Machina style.
Proving, again, that Odin is a dick. Sigh.
But the battles are fun.
I could understand how the Young Gods came into being, but I wasn’t clear on how exactly this stopped the Bad Guy. Even after reading the final pages again.
And simply saying that Odin planned it all doesn’t cut it with me.
The issue ends with Thor angry at this father. Who, a few issues back, he was pulling out all the stops to save…
Complicated relationship they have…

I've been waiting for something like this to happen, it was a long time coming: Odin, the All Father, turning into a master plotter toying with the lives of men and gods!

It's a much better role for him than the Deus Ex role that saves everybody at the very last moment.

  2013-06-06 18:28:27
Kind of meh overall, but bonus points for Thor telling off Odin in the end.

  skalchemist Says:

Every issue where Odin makes everything alright again and takes away all memory of what happened gets 1 star from this point forward. That's the rule.

On the plus side, though, Hildegarde keeps getting cooler and cooler. In fact, she is cool enough now that I expect Marvel to ruin her character in some way very soon. In fact, ruined in the same way they are ruining Sif by having her dressed in a silly white robe and hanging off of Thor throughout all of these issues, instead of actually kicking butt.

  leisch Says:

I agree with Skalchemist's new rule. Now it looks like the next story will be Thor pissed the Old Man off and needs to be punished (but Odin will relent in a few issues) again.

  ThunderZtorm Says:
  2014-10-30 07:10:16
So when will Sif return to her shieldmaiden life again? Interesting to see the start of the Young Gods though.

Art is kind of a step back to 1967, Colletta inks like he always did, it kinda looks like Don Heck was involved, too. This story is shaking out with a fair amount of lame as the obvious solution again proves to be the plot direction. Clearly this story could be better handled. The script is typical, but at least it is comprehend-able. The best part was the Don Blake change, seems like that facet of double identity doesn't get properly used enough these last few years.   I'm just gonna call him Odick now. Maybe Hella will punish me and send me to hell for this blaspheme, but Odick is a dick.

Thank goodness Thor was saved by that giant explosion that happens every time he transforms into Donald Blake... Guy must have gone through so many offices...
We have yet another comic that ruins the ending with the cover. As soon as I saw the 3 humans together for a mysterious reason, just like the 3 figures on the cover titled "They Walk Like Gods!"
As soon as you saw how devastated New York was, you knew Odin or some other force would undo it all in the end.

  Robareid Says:
  2015-07-14 17:35:12
No explanation of what happened? Really? Urgh.

1 star. Nonsensical, overly-long, and meandering extended plots that are poorly placed. Uninteresting supporting characters. Just awful. Can’t wait for Conway to leave this title.

2 stars for the Prime-Ego while in the prime of his life using his prime energies at a prime location priming the New Gods!!!

Cover Me - The coming of an 70's progressive rock band!!!

Flashback - It looks like this issue changes when Heimdal/Heimdall arrived on Midgard...

Name Game - Also, Jackson Kimbal becomes Jason Kimbal...

Details - I wished someone would've bought an globe for the Marvel bullpen back in the day!!!

Annabelle - Missie Pompadour seems a little too happy...

'Nuff Said - "...perhaps then I'll know why one look into Heimdal's eyes changed my life..."-Carter Dyam

I thought I'd missed a page with Ego Prime disappearing, but no, it was just a terribly written section of the story and I have no idea what happened. And good thing Thor didn't always explode things when he transforms otherwise those early ones in the middle of a group of people would have been really awkward.

  Russ Says:

Odin is attempting to become a master manipulator and his first task creates a lot of collateral damage. Looks like he has a lot to learn. Better yet, he should just concentrate on being a better ruler and dad.

Yeah, I see Odin "disciplining" Thor "for his impudence." But I loved seeing Thor giving that pompous a$$ a well-deserved button chewing and calling him out. I see Thor's tirade as him speaking for all of us: tired of his poor decisions and his subjects and other innocents needlessly paying the price. Maybe the arc ended with a "deus-ex-Odin", but it served a purpose this time. I liked where this ended up.

3 stars. Quite a narrative it ended up being, even if it used well-worn storyou devices we'very already seen dozens of times before. Let's not waste the opportunity this time, okay guys?

  CrazyforRAMU Says:
  2017-07-16 15:43:58
Well, after all this complex effort and hard-to-follow plotting and Odin-scheming, surely these newly-empowered humans will do important stuff in the next few books to make it all worthwhile.

*checks character appearances section*

They get put on ice for 88 frigging issues? Oh, that's taking at least one star off this issue's rating. I'm as pissed with this shabby excuse for a resolution as Thor is.

I have to wonder how much these "Younger Gods" are an answer to Jack Kirby's Fourth World series going on over at DC.

I also have to wonder why they just dropped them like 3rd Period French.

Still, Thor finally calls out Daddy for playing games with people's lives.

Three Stars.

  JonahBlack Says:

This series, pretty much since the beginning, is great at heightening the tension and putting you on the edge of your seat, only to completely fall flat at the end.

I kinda hate how mercurial Thor and Odin are towards each other:

"All hail Odin most high! Wait, you risked Balder stubbing his toe, and the mortals getting hangnails, you Monster!"

"Thor, my favorite son, for trying to usurp the throne, I've taken away your brother's dessert for one week...okay, 4 days. Wait, you touched a doorknob with your left hand on a Thursday! Insolent child! I banish thee to the realm of spiked unpleasantness!"

I suppose they're *consistently* like this, and it *is* kinda how my own family works, so maybe I less dislike them, but more relate uncomfortably...

  Marksman Says:
  2018-02-16 16:11:55
Best part was Volstagg getting invited to a tea party.

  benmason486 Says:

If there is an energy release powerful enough to destroy stone, how has Blake not destroyed his office and killed Jane and his patients already?

That's not how evolution works. By the 1970's the process of evolution was fairly well understood. There is no excuse for not picking up a basic biology text and reading up on it.

Odin is a jerk to destroy Earth like that to create a new, younger race of gods. I would not want to live under his rule. I'd be scared for my life every day.
