I don't exactly know why, but the evil mutant's costumes annoy me a bit (specially the Frog). Oh well, it's the fashion...

Probably because his costume is pretty dumb.

Uhh..why is the Scarlett Witch green?

Is there any point whatsoever to her mask/helmet?

A sliding board that heads out to sea to a freighter?

Good story. The only down side is that Magneto's group was called the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants." I know it was mostly the time, but no one actually sees him/herself as evil. Magneto et al don't see themselves as evil; they justify what they do by saying they are helping the cause of mutantkind. Truly evil people always see themselves as heroes.

Superheroguy1 got the jump on me. I was gonna say something about that. I mean I get why you'd reveal your plan to your foe, these guys have big egos and it needs to be fed, but to name it evil must be to strike fear into humans, I guess.

There's two prominent, Marvel bad guy groups with "Evil" names, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the Masters of Evil. It always bugged me, as nobody would actually CALL themselves that. The former can be shortened to "The Brotherhood of Mutants" and still sound ominous. Masters of Evil just doesn't work, though.

In answer to Thomas's question, I believe it was a printing error. From what I've read, the comics were written and drawn, then sent off to be colored and printed out-of-house. It happened with a couple different titles, back then.

Solid issue. I'm mostly reading this one thinking about what will come later. At least three of these characters later have their power levels expanded to nigh godhood. It's crazy how things will change over the years.

Also, I love how Marvel Girl's Danger Room test was helping to prepare the cake...Oh, Stan, you old sexist, you!

And now the X-Men comics really start to feel like X-Men comics! Meanwhile, on a completely personal level, I'm excited to get up to the point where Pietro and Wanda enter the universe.

Wow, the Toad guy is really annoying, and Mastermind isn't much better. I like Magneto as a villain. He actually kind of reminds me of Dr. Doom. And of course Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are cool.

I can't help but wonder if Quicksilver was intentionally created to be a Flash ripoff...

Good story!

Before I started reading the comics I already knew every single Marvel movie. So now it's really exciting for me to see a group like the brotherhood existed such a long time before the movie was made and even had the same name already in this time!

Good story, but I agree with the others that the name "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants" is a stupid. No one thinks of themselves as evil. I'm looking forward to the next X-Men issue though.

The X-Men party is really getting started!

The 'evil' name is interesting, there are undoubtably those in the Marvel universe who both are and see themselves as truly evil and embrace that but the Magneto and these guys certainly aren't those villains. The silver age worldview may not have room in it for the misguided but noble identities of some of these characters but it's hard to see Magneto, Wanda or Pietro as being truly evil.

This was a great issue. It's clear that Quicksilver and the green Scarlet Witch aren't really evil. The X-Men training scenes are always a hoot. I'm excited for the next issue.

Great issue. Finally some villains with some dimension with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, who aren't really evil.

Wow this was a significant improvement, and the positive spike in characterization made the villains more interesting than the heroes. And now I can say I disliked the Toad since his first appearance.

Loved the characterization of Pietro. Some depth to a villain, like with Crimson Dynamo, is a welcome surprise at this point in the order.

I like Magneto and Prof meeting on the astral plane. Magneto has always been one of the best villains, and i think mostly (adding to what everyone else has already said) its because he does not consider himself to be evil. Just someone choosing a different path.

Really important comic because of who appears in it, but, jeeze, it's hard to read. Never have 22 pages felt so so long.

I absolutely loved this one. I've already read about 30 of the early X-Men issues, and I do tend to love them all (I'm just a big fan of the 60's comics in general), but I feel this one had a better than average story. I really like how Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch don't really agree with Magneto, but are forced to follow him to fulfill a debt. Certainly more interesting then just a normal band of bad guys with a common goal.

I gawta say, Toad freaks me out. The first time I ever saw the character was in the movies, and I had always liked him- the actor is so cute! But seeing him in the comics makes me cringe. I mean.. Just. Ew.

I really wished that Iceman could've smothered Cyclops a little longer with the ice. I mean he was up and running in no time. A few more minutes and no more Cyclops!

It looks like Stan Lee had already some future plans for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch otherwise he would created them as he usually do with villains as lunatic, one-dimensional, egocentric, power hungry characters. Compare this to the first appearances of Magneto or Sandman.
