Issue Review

#13, by Steve Gerber, expands the world of Man-Thing a lot with more info on his environment and his connection to Jennifer Kale. The story also manages to bring Ted Sallis back. Briefly. Again. 6/10

Much better. No simplistic moralizing this issue.

With Gerber writing, the fact that Man Thing's swamp is some kind of dimensional nexus should lead to all kinds of weirdness.

+1 star for the shattering Ellen.

Much better than drunken wife beating hillbillies and racist yokels. We finally have some semblance of a cohesive story loving forward, and it's pretty solid based on this one issue.

But we don't have to go completely away from wife-beating hillbillies and racist yokels, right? I mean, it IS Florida!
Anyone else feel that grandpa looks like Stan Lee circa 1990?

3 stars for the Man-Thing reaching out and touching someone!!!

Sympathy For The Devil - Is Mick Jagger a member of the cult?? (p4,p5)

Snug - I'm liking Faux Ellen's outfit!!

Demon Tossing - Great scene of the Man-Thing throwing demons at Thog!!!

'Nuff Said - "I'm a chemist, not a wizard."-Ted "Bones" Sallis

The Monsters Mailbox in this issue has a letter from Matt Howarth (creator of Those Annoying Post Bros, Savage Henry, etc). Howarth disparages the inks in Man-Thing, which he incorrectly attributes to Howard Chaykin. Incidentally, Howarth and Chaykin are among the handful of creators to have been associated with Vortex Comics.

It took me a while to realise that they couldn't have been deliberately trying to draw Stan Lee into the story, because he wouldn't have looked like that back in the day. But it does make me wonder if Grandpa here gave him the idea of all the cameos.

The Man-Thing feature is still on a roll. I was starting to wonder when the "Nexus of All Realities" concept was going to be introduced, and here it is. I'm also intrigued by the supposed connection between the monster and Jennifer. It'll be worth exploring in subsequent issues.

It was also cool to see Ted Sallis again. It seems at some level he knows what's happened to him and his mind is now a sort of prison. Interesting that he chose to become the monster again instead of saving himself at the expense of three people he technically doesn't know.

4 stars. I think putting an occult spin on this series was a good move; it's added another dimension to the series and opens things up to a lot of possibilities.

You're mistaking Florida with South Carolina. Florida can't vote and has the crazy stories like face eating wannabe zombies from Florida State University, while SC has the inbred, wife beating yokels (1st in domestic violence).

4 stars for Steve Gerber going straight to the head of the class! Okay, so he's my favorite Marvel writer not named Simonson, but still...

4 stars.

Man-Thing is kind of like then anti - hulk, in that he's dimly aware of having been something else, and yearns to have that back, where Hulk is more aware of Banner, but hates him. This lead to a poignant and different scene with the mirrors that I quite enjoyed

The Man-Thing stories are pretty simple and rely on coincidence far too much; at the same time, most of Marvel's work relies on coincidence. I think that is a result of having to be set in his swamp. How do you do villain-of-the-week when your location is that small and specific?

It has the same limitations that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had: a limited locale and cast. I loved DS9 (my favorite of the Star Trek series), so I am hopeful for Man-Thing as well. Given the limitations, this series has the potential to delve much more into character than most other super-hero series.

Did they just use Hiroshima as a plot resolution?
