Issue Review

Fairly standard story, with a villain duping a moderately-sympathetic character into helping him fight Namor. Ending is quite shocking. Namor spends the early part of the issue being a jerk. 6/10

Does Sunfire have any redeeming qualities? I'm having a lot of trouble finding them. It was a well told story though.

Namor is out of control here. He is going to hit Nita for not obeying him on page 2. He attacks some old lady for talking back to him. He assaults a peasant . I'm trying to figure out if Mike Freiderich is expecting me to hate him, in which case he has succeeded, or that Freiderich just thinks this is a fine way for Namor to behave, in which case, ick.

This is the first time I've really enjoyed a Submariner story in a while.

Was rolling my eyes at the "Yea Namor" as he once again saves the day because of course they would never let a ship full of people catch and and leak defolient into the the ocean, that would be crazy, what kind of - turns the page - ....wow...
That is a heavy panel to be having in a comic for kids.

"It's all right, Nita. A long time ago I learned you must give Namor his head". (page 10)

No wonder Namor is so fond of Betty Dean....

Wow, Namor - after three decades of fighting fire-using enemies, your experience in dealing with them really shows. I mean, throwing water at them!? Nobody else would ever think of that!

4 stars for the return of the rising son!!!

Bubbles - Poor, Nita, her house looks like it came from a fish tank...

Emerald Isle - Did the boardinghouse woman just come over on a boat?!

Cougar - Bad Betty Dean still got it goin' on!!!

Ah-So - Are we sure George Tuska didn't draw this? Look at those Jap choppers!!!

Miracle-Gro - When we first see Dragon-Lord's base it is clearly out in the open, but when Namor is looking for Sunfire it is covered by the jungle!!

Chikan - Also, can Dragon-Lord and his cronies put on some pants!!!

SOS - @duncanm: I agree, that is a very strong image of the ship sinking!!!

'Nuff Said - "A mutant samurai is easily swifter...more agile...than a limp fish!"-Sunfire the Atomic Samurai...sorry, but Durango55 had the best line!!!

Maybe it was all the times Namor battled either of the Human Torches, but I enjoyed watching him battle Sunfire. It had the look of one of the classic Namor-Torch battles of yesteryear. Bill Everett's final run on his greatest creation is quite enjoyable; his mysterious Golden Age look with a modern (for early 70s) storytelling vibe.

One thing I didn't like was the now-outdated Asian caricatures, notably that one peasant. That was a bit of a shock to see. And I thought Sunfire wouldn't be so quick to ally himself with a nationalist fanatic after his experience with his uncle in X-Men #64. Sure, he still would've been quick to throw down with Namor, but it just seemed like he was repeating the same mistakes in his last appearance.

3 stars. Betty's line to Nita on page 10? (looks at the cover) How did this get past the CCA to get a stamp?

Everyone is very angry in this one. Except the guys on the ship, it was nice to see them actually acknowledge that Namor saved them.

Is Nita hitting on her cousin? She keeps talking about how she digs cuddling with him...

What got me was the exposition still of Namor as he's doing actions or taking a face full of radioactive fire. Explaining how it blinded you is not getting the job done any better, Subby.
