Issue Review
   September 27, 2013
Now, this is cool. Seriously cool.

When Doctor Strange's body is stolen while he is out of it (in astral form) Clea summons Namor and The Hulk to his aid. So, for the second time, The Defenders are together. And this time, unlike their first outing, they are proactive and heroic.

And cool. Seriously cool.

Strange might be a bit dim (getting duped so easily early in the story) but it's still a buzz to watch him and take a jump into his odd world. Once he is out of the picture, the story advances at rapid pace. We get to watch Namor and The Hulk make their way towards Clea and, eventually, meet up with her and Wong. With Banner taking the place of The Hulk we then get to watch this fascinating quartet work together and track down the missing body of Doctor Strange.

It all leads to a fight (a cool one) with a demon (a cool one) and the revelation of where Strange's astral form has taken refuge.

All very cool indeed. 10/10

"Defenders" is a great team-up, but everything that happened in this issue was far too convenient for the story. Honestly, everything.

Still I like it a lot.

Ok, the first issue was mediocre, but this really was a lot of fun. I like it that Clea and Wong both got some solid page time.

Good comics fun. Defenders is my second favorite team after Avengers.

Crazy panels are back, but this somehow works with Doctor Strange-related occult reality bending. The story and script are better than the art. This tale is timely for the era of Rosemary's Baby. Clea and Wong in action make a nice touch. This really is not a must read, tho...(2)

I have to admit, I was on edge for a lot of this story. Yes, it was all too convenient but the story was great.

This felt more like a Dr. Strange story than anything else, which is fine by me. I'm surprised that this team is working so far, and I like the relationship that's growing between Namor and Hulk.

Anyone else see Hulk/Namor relationship starting to turn into a Gimli/Legolas type thing? Competitive with each other, but growing to have a mutual respect. I liked that Banner is down with the team-up too. MUCH improved art over last time. Still looking forward to seeing more.

The story didn't improve much, but at least the artwork was better.

3 stars for the Dreaded Dormammu wanting to go trick-or-treating!!!

Who Does No. 2 Work For - If Dormammu did make it over; you know that cult leader wouldn't of lasted long...

Spell Of Confusion - Once again, the Eye of Agamotto is the amulet that Dr. Strange wears. The Orb of Agamotto is the crystal sphere that Dr. Strange keeps in the giant jar!!!

Ancient Chinese Secret - Who knew that Wong could bust a move!?

In A Rut - Good to see Roy & Jeanie Thomas with Tom Fagan again!!

Pen Pals - Great scene of the Hulk & Namor meeting in the alley!!

Yowza - How about Clea rockin' the mini skirt?!!

'Nuff Said - "Yes, Miss Clea. As you know, I called you because I felt the master was in need of diversion--a woman's hand, perhaps--"-Cheeky Wong

It is absolutely a Legolas / Gimli dynamic between Namor and the Hulk, as well as Strange as some kind of young Gandalf.

I love some of Hulk's lines in this - that random little throwaway of Hulk doesn't trust the girl - still, Hulk doesn't trust anyone, made me laugh.

This story seems more classic Defenders to me. Having that ritual in the church seemed kind of eyebrow-raising, but still, a fun yarn. I also liked setting this once again in Rutland, like Roy did in Avengers #83.

It does seem like the emphasis is on Doctor Strange in this series, but I think it's working well. The presence of Hulk and Namor keeps the sometimes over-the-top mysticism grounded while somehow raising the stakes. This human element was lacking in Doc's own series, in spite of Roy's attempts to ground it a little more in the waning issues of his book. While I think the Surfer is a good choice for the team, the chemistry wouldn't be anywhere near as compelling if he'd been included. However, I also agree that the dynamic between Namor and the Hulk is working brilliantly here.

3 stars. Good overall beginning for the non-team after two issues. I think this act has a future.

Does anybody else think Dr. Strange is coming off as a bit of a jerk in this title? Last issue he was really derisive to the Hulk; in this issue, he describes keeping his astral form alive in Wong as "huddling within a dead beast's body for warmth." And at the end, he's not all that bummed to discover that his teammates might have died in a rockslide. Good thing they didn't; this Doc Strange needs other heroes around to keep him humble!

Do you think Mr. Thomas is painting Dr. Strange as a pompous jerk intentionally? Maybe it's just an unintended consequence of the over-dramatic tone of the Doc's dialogue.

I really liked the lampshade hanging going on during the exposition with Roy, Jeannie, and Tom. Easily the best self-insert in the order so far.

I'm not familiar with Ross Andru, but I like his work so far!

I will say I was slightly disappointed that we didn't get to see Hulk punch Dormammu in the face...

Hulk punching Dormammu has to happen at some point. I want to see that.

Why do a fair number of people believe that bringing an evil, all-powerful magician to the Earth is a good idea? I see only down-sides.
