Issue Review

An enjoyable issue which kinda goes nowhere. Half is soap, where Pete misunderstands things between Gwen and Flash and is heartbroken/angry. There is only so much mileage you can get from misunderstandings. Elsewhere we get a sad and touching backstory on a new character who meets Spidey and offers to be his partner. Spider-Man laughs in his face. Kinda a dick move. The end. 8/10

Do you think Marvel might want a do-over on that "newest superstar" label? At what point do they finally run out of viable animals to base villains on?

Romita senior is spoiling us all. To turn in artwork this good every month is such a treat for any fan. This seems to be the only title Stan doesn't turn into a farce. The script reads easily enough. Our new character is even goofier in costume, quite silly, really. I'm guessing our surprise villain is Kraven, so things aren't gonna improve for a little while yet. (3+)

Even the filler issues for Spidey are good. The art is great, Marvel hasn't monkeyed around with this series.

I am not proud of Spiderman respond. Good person should react different way.

I have no issue with the way Spidey responded. If you're a professional athlete and your put in the thousands of hours of practice and busted your butt and sacrificed and then some schmuck just pops up off the couch he's spent the past decade on and throws on a jersey telling you he want to be your new team-mate, you have every right to laugh at him.
My concern would be with the way Peter treats Gwen like a lying, cheating whore. He has literally no reason to believe that Gwen would leave him for Flash other than his own self doubts.

110 Spider issues and Stan is still using the exact same formula, but now with an even lamer 'villain.'

I can understand why Spidey would mock Gibbon a little, but he clearly exacerbated the situation intentionally and any result with Gibbon would be partially caused by him.

3 stars for the Gibbon wanting to hang with Spidey! For those who think he's bad; wait till Spidey runs into Leapfrog and the Toad!!!

Zoo - @leisch: We still haven't got to the Mongoose yet...

Mixed Signals - For a girl that is so worried about Peter, she didn't waste any time leaving with Flash! Also, that was some putdown she gave him...big, strong, rugged...

Webmail - Were the fans really asking for more Kraven?? Maybe, future Spidey writer David Michelinie whose letter appears here secretly did!!

'Nuff Said - "The toughest thing about being a superhero is getting up the nerve to wear these corny costumes!"-Spidey

Gibbon was a pretty sympathetic character overall. Spidey came off as a bit of a jerk.

There's only so many times Spidey can complain about the same things before I'm no longer sympathetic. Whining that he hurt Aunt May because Gwen put her in her place, the sympathy is long gone.

  Russ Says:

Spidey's been a bit of a jerk. Not sure if it's the situation with Gwen, his illness, or what, but it is a little out of character.

But it's the whole thing with Gwen that's putting me off right now. The drama between them is clearly contrived, and designed to milk more plot out of their relationship. Granted, things would be boring if they were perfectly alright, but manufacturing a conflict between the two is getting tiring. And Gwen stirring the pot with May was an interesting wrinkle after all; Gwen's really done nothing but right since her return from London (issue #98). She's defended him and even turned away Flash's advances. Peter's acting like a grade A deux-che.

And that also goes for his reaction to Martin. Okay, the Gibbon's a little hard to take seriously, but Spidey's reaction to his offer was a little out of character too. Anyway, let's see where this Gibbon thing goes; auditioning for Spidey's sidekick is an interesting wrinkle.

3 stars. Jazzy Johnny's artwork is still knocking it out of the park.

Kraven is the super-villain they most requested? WHY!? He isn't even super! He's a horrible and boring villain, a Crocodile Dundee wannabe.

Other than the Kingpin what decent villains have been created since Ditko left? The Kangaroo was ridiculously inept, the gibbon, while sympathetic, is pathetic. They were saved by being involved in decent stories but do you really ever want to see them again?

I kind of feel like the end of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back". I want to find the names of everyone who wanted Kraven to come back and kick them where it'll do them the most good.
