For a series I wasn't that interested in, this really surprised me. I enjoyed this better than most of the super-hero comics that were coming out at the same time. This was a lot of fun and I'm now looking forward to the next issue.

  4 stars, really enjoyed it.

The reason I would not give it 5 stars is taking out a fighter jet with a hand grenade.... come on. I know its comic action fun but come on. :)

Good to read about Fury from the beginning and take a break from the general super hero marvel action.

I'm not a big fan of Fury or the Howling Commandos, but this was pretty decent. Loved the Hitler cameo.

4 stars for the 1st app of the Howlers!!! WAH-HOOO!!!!

Cover Me - Gabe is white on the cover. Everybody knows that he should be grey instead!

Meet The Howlers - Nice introduction to the boys of Able Company!

Hardheaded - I like it that Fury's helmet has a huge hole in it!!

Rebel Yell - Reb is such a rebel, yelling YAH-HOOO instead of WAH-HOOO...

Gay Paree - Thank goodness his name is La Brave and not La Coward...

Mein Feuhrer - He sooo craaazy!!!

Intel - Nice addition of the weapons used by different countries!

'Nuff Said - "I've got dozens of jobs like this in the records--all listed under suicide!"-Happy Sam

"Using the holocaust as a diversion"

Not the best choice of words for a WW2 comic Stan

This moves so much faster than most of the super-hero comics that were out at the same time. There's pretty much no unnecessary narration at all. Lots of fun.

I'm very surprised that I liked this issue. Had a different flow than the super hero comics in the 616 order. Damn now I want to read more in this order.

Too much dialog, but very good for the time.

The Black Panther was the first black SUPERhero, but was Gabriel Jones the first black comic book hero? This is older than the Panther.

"Gabe is white on the cover."

Supposedly, he was colored correctly, but the engraving company thought it was a mistake, so they changed it.

Yes, I know the story. I was just joking about how he is usually colored grey all the time instead of black.

hmmm i figured that WWII-comis aren't for me, but i had to try it out. Now I know it...it is no bad comic, don't get me wrong, it is just not what i want to read... 2 (very personal) stars

  • That’s my line – “WAH-HOOOO!” (Corporal Dugan)

  • War stories are really not my thing, but...

  • I never thought I would, but I really enjoyed this story. Maybe I just grew tired of all the Silver Age technocrap! But this is quite refreshing. Great characters with unique colorful personalities.

  1. No, Stan, a French resistance leader does not know when or exactly where D-Day will be. No one knows when for sure yet. He may have some inkling though, because of the intelligence he was asked to collect and the missions he was asked to do.
2. And of course "D-Day" doesn't refer to anything special. It just meant—and still means—the date of a mission. "On D-Day, at H-Hour, Able company will move forward…" We only call that D-Day "D-Day" because it was so historically important. I'm sure the American and British leadership was calling it that at the time, but I deeply doubt anyone else was.
3. Nor did the Germans know that D-Day was coming. They expected a mass invasion at some point, of course, but not necessarily in France. Indeed, the Allies successfully convinced them that Patton would be attacking from the South.

My knowledge of military history may make Sgt. Fury a difficult read. Still, it was entertaining. Three stars.

I wasn't that impressed. It was ok, but not great. I liked the introduction of the different members of the group, but it seems like they made a list of every war war movie stereotype and then made sure they had a match. Also, Fury seems more reckless and crazy in this compared to the cold and calculating Fury that shows up in more modern times. Maybe he just gets older and wiser.

The "war comic" was one genre where Marvel never did (nor ever *would*, as it turned out) manage to overtake their nearest competitors, DC Comics. At the very same time Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert were turning out nuanced, realistic tales of combat and courage in titles such as OUR ARMY AT WAR (Sgt. Rock) and, a little later on, STAR SPANGLED WAR STORIES (Enemy Ace) and OUR FIGHTING FORCES (The Losers), Stan Lee was doing... we... *this*, essentially.

Two stars, because I'm a generous soul.
