I like Percy. He's like a funnier, less-annoying version of Sitwell from SHIELD. Decent intro for Zemo, but same as with Strucker, he didn't get a lot of play in this issue. I'd have like to have seen more of him.

4 stars for the 1st app of Sir Percival Pinkerton!!! Who always stays calm and swings a mean bumbershoot!!!

Cover Me - Gabe's actually colored right on the cover!!

Baron Zemo, MD - I always thought it was cool that Dr. Zemo had a duo 1st app in this issue and Avengers #6 at the same time. One Modern and the other past. At least in this issue, he's not wearing his crappy costume!!!

Credit Due - I'm glad Dick Ayers took over pencils. Kirby was getting pretty rough...

Family Heirloom - Dr. Zemo had one sweet castle!!

Static - I don't think blowing into a speaker would short out the system...

Aryan Pride - It's a good thing Dr. Zemo wanted to show off his Death Ray first, or that would've been the end of the Howlers!!

'Nuff Said - "Now vhy did he keep vinking at me??"-Oblivious Goose Stepper

I'm surprised at the quality of this title. Compared the Main 616 issues that were coming out at this time, it ranks up there with Spider-Man. Its been a really enjoyable read. T

It was a boring introduction for Zemo but Percival more than made up for it.

  • That’s my line – “I’m your new replacement! I assume that makes me a Howler… whatever on Earth that means!!” (Percival Pinkerton)

  • First time Ayers draws this series. Now I usually love his artwork, but this time I’m not convinced. True, the bar was set high with Kirby! So when you’re used to a certain standard, it is hard to settle for anything else. And Ayers’s Happy Sam is no Happy Sam to me. Thank God, they did not give the job to Ditko!

  • Gotta love that Hitler poster with darts all over it!

  • That Percival character seems like a colorful addition to the team, at first glance.

  • I agree with the comments that we did not see enough of Zemo. Pretty solid issue, once again. 4 stars for Percy’s first!

I expected Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos to be uninteresting to me, but now I'm suprised how much I enjoy it. Not to mention that it's much better quality than many of the titles in the main order in this time period.

Once again, I'm seemingly destined to play odd man out, insofar as SGT. FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS is concerned. I'm not *trying* to be difficult about this, really and truly. ;)

The first (and most insurmountable) problem pops up on the very first page: the name "Dick Ayers" in the credits, in place of Jack Kirby's. Now, I completely understand the whys and wherefores at play, here: even "King" Kirby can only be stretched so thin over the course of any given month, and FURY was doubtless a lower priority for Marvel than (say) FANTASTIC FOUR or THOR. Be that as it may, however: this is more than a simple baby step downwards in quality, both aesthetically *and* in basic storytelling chops, and Roussos' meticulous inks can only help carry so much of the newly surrendered weight. Minus one star, right there.

Then, too, there's the thorough and absolute surrendering of even the rudiments of basic realism, as exemplified by the addition of the stone ludicrous "Percival Pinkerton," who routinely tosses full-grown men through the air in all directions by the crook of his "bumbershoot." (I will give $100.00, cash on the barrel head, to anyone here who can credibly duplicate said feat, live and in front of me. Line forms on the left, gentlemen.) Let's not even go into such inanities as Nazi U-Boats prowling the English Channel, freely and with seeming impunity. (Allied forces heavily mined the entire Channel back in 1939, for pity's sake...!) Minus another star.

Compared to jaw-droppers the likes of these, Baron Zemo and his "death-ray" very nearly seems as credible and sane as something out of a Ken Burns documentary.

Look, I'm more than willing to meet this series half way, my hand to God... but: *c'mon*, Stan. ;) Three stars.
