ISSUE'S LETTERS
Dear Stan and Jack,

Issue #20 - terrific! I especially like the way you have the introductory splash as part of the story. Little things . . . little things heck! Big things - like including the Watcher, actually made the story. But the best part, in my opinion was where the Thing forlornly said, "The one thing worse than hating a Yancy Streeter is havin' to be grateful to one!" Art - there is no superlative suitable to describe Kirby's art. Perhaps issue #20 wasn't your best, but you know something? I can't remember where I've read better. I guess Stan's stories sort of grow on you!

Dick Froese
Box 421
Vanderhoof, Brit. Col.
Canada

Yeah - kinda like a wart!

Dear Stan and Jack,

I'd like to ask you guys to print in your next F.F. ANNUAL (the first one was great!) the stories in which the F.F. first met Dr. Doom and Sub-Mariner. With these two stories I think the next Annual will be perfect!

Mike Gass
Box 763, 322nd. Air. Div.
APO 253, New York, N. Y.

Here's a secret, Mike - just between us and a few hundred thousand readers - our next Annual (on sale this summer) will FEATURE ol' Doc Doom - and a zillion surprises!

Dear Stan and Jack,

Enclosed you will find pages from several of your comic books. Each one has something about the hero fighting Communists (or as you call them, Reds or Commies). Are you trying encourage World War III? I read countless other comics and in none have I read such anti-Communist stuff. Don't you have enough imagination to think up new enemies without having to fall back on the Communists? I believe in the American way of life and do not believe in Communism, however, why can't we have our beliefs and let them have theirs, and still exist in friendship?

Jimmy Edelstein
106 Central Drive
Stoughton, Mass.

We spend billions for national defense, Jim. Who do you think we're concerned about - the Eskimos?? Anyway, how do the rest of our readers feel about this?

Dear Stan and Jack,

You guys at MARVEL must have invented a 44 hour day or something the way your magazines look and read. On your new issues, I like the new approach to witchcraft in DR. STRANGE! SGT. FURY is the greatest war story magazine since the war ended! X-MEN are great although they remind me of the FANTASTIC FOUR! And the AVENGERS are great - their personalities shine out even more than in their own mags. While I'm on the Avengers subject, I bet some error-picker writes in about an error in AVENGERS #2 when Rick calls the Hulk "Don Blake." I disagree. Rick felt that perhaps this wasn't the Hulk - maybe this was an impostor. To test out his theory, he did what Ben and Johnny did in FF #10 when Dr. Doom changed bodies with Reed Richards. Rick said the Hulk's identity was Dr. Don Blake, a name he had seen in some medical journal, (not knowing that THOR is Don Blake) to see if the Hulk was Bruce Banner and not some impostor, as Bruce would correct Rick. So you see, no foul was committed after all. Keep up the good work, MARVEL!!

Thanks, Paul! Glad to learn we're so clever! And all the time we thought we had just made one of our usual bonehead mistakes!

Dear Stan and Jack,

I want to rave about the Dr. Strange story in STRANGE TALES! It was a masterpiece! I've latched on to all the Dr. Strange tales, and I want to see lots more. This cat has great potential. The latest TALES OF SUSPENSE was a complete surprise. Until now I didn't think too much of "Shell Head," but this mag cured me. I'm an addict of all MARVEL books now, as SUSPENSE was my last holdout. Man, that uniform is revolutionary! Keep 'em coming like that!

Marc Bailey

Lomita 17, Calif.

Please! A little more respect for our heroes! We don't call him "shell-head"! We think of Iron Man as "ol' bullet-head"!

Dear Stan and Jack,

SGT. FURY is great - that's something no one can argue about! But in issue #5 on page 15, panel 2 you have Nick with 3 hands!! What a man! But it was real cool anyway!

Norman Bennett
Rt. #6, Box 681
Orlando, Fla.

See? When we claim Marvel gives you more for your money, we're not kiddin'!!

Dear Stan and Jack,

Tonight I was sick in bed with the virus. I was in my room with all my MARVEL COMICS. Then while the doctor was taking my temperature, he picked up X-MEN #2. I had to remind him the two minutes were up for the temperature, as he was busy reading the book. This is exactly what the doctor told me . . . "I've never seen such an interesting comic book in my life as THE X-MEN; I'm going to tell my son to start buying it so I can read it too." I was really amazed!!

Richard O'Baid

The only thing that amazes us is - why were you amazed??

Dear Stan and Jack,

We, the Personnel of the 733rd Medical Detachment, APO 46, N. Y., N. Y. are just wild about your magazine, FANTASTIC FOUR! As soon as it comes out every month we rush to the PX to get a copy. We all think that it's the greatest on the market. We also have a growing Fan Club for the Fantastic Four here on Post, and would be glad to hear from any of your readers.

Personnel

Just for fun, fellas, drop us a line later on and tell us how many readers wrote to you. We'd like to know if anyone besides Stan and Jack reads these pages!

Dear Stan and Jack,

A short while ago you gave us a dare. It was to give a book report on the Fantastic Four. I did it! I managed to choke and gasp it out to the class. I thought they'd think I was crazy, and the teacher would give me an "F." But the class loved it, and the teacher gave me an "A"! Now I'm making book reports on Spider-Man, the X-Men, and all the rest of your MARVEL characters. Your magazines certainly have ushered in the MARVEL AGE OF COMICS. They're so good my Mom reads them, and thinks they're great - especially the X-Men.

John Wachter

We hope this sort of thing doesn't catch on, Johnny! We just haven't time so start writing textbooks!

Dear Stan and Jack,

I've just finished reading STRANGE TALES #114 asking which readers would like to see Captain America return. Well, as an old-timer, (33) here's my affirmative vote now, just in case I should lapse into senile psychosis one day soon. The red, white, and blue American theme is timely now and might help to inspire anti-Communist patriotism - just as you did with the Fascists during World War II. Anyhow, good luck and keep up the good work, guys.

We'll try, Larry, as long as you "old-timers" string along.

Dear Stan and Jack,

I don't know if you get letters from France but you sure will get a lot of letters from me now that I've discovered the Fan Page. I love your magazines and hope you will continue the great work. But one thing bugs me - the THOR magazine JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY is so dramatic now. Do you want all of Brassioux flooded with tears? Your work is wonderful, and all my friends read your magazines.

Vive le France!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS SECTION:

We admit it was a pretty nervy thing to do, writing "THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE" on the cover of FF, but now it's official! We've been honored by "The Academy of Comic Books Arts and Sciences" in their latest poll, receiving that title in a nationwide referendum! It just goes to show - WE knew it before anyone else!

The Academy also voted SUB-MARINER their favorite villain, and THE THING their favorite supporting character. Our thanks to all concerned, and our condolences to the Yancy Street Gang who didn't even get an honorable mention!

You've heard it rumored - you've heard the speculations - the whispers - "Marvel's coming out with something new . . . something completely different!" Well, now it can be told - One of comicdom's greatest talents, Bill Everett, who gave you the original Sub-Mariner in the Golden Age of Comics, now joins Stan Lee to bring you the newest, and possibly the greatest creation of the Marvel Age - watch for it on sale Feb. 4th - the book-length block-buster - the one, the only - DAREDEVIL! He's the most modern, the most exciting, the most UNUSUAL of super-heroes! Just wait till you see the gimmick! Don't dare miss DAREDEVIL!

And now for our usual fun and games . . . We've received hundreds of entries in our great no-prize contest to find out who has the biggest comic mag collection. The first no-prize goes to Bill Dubay, of Chenery St., San Francisco, Cal., who claims he has 11,221 comics! He says it took him six hours just to COUNT 'em! Runners-up are Alex Nicholson, Nashville, Tenn., John Lebar, Allentown, Pa., Robert Allen, Attica, N. Y., and Brian Corber, Chicago, Ill. All you fans who didn't win a no-prize, don't feel too bad. We'll think of another nutty contest some other time.

Not too much space left, so we'll have to move fast! SPIDER-MAN #11, now on sale, features the return of Doctor Octopus! We went to a lot of trouble to produce this mag, so don't be ungrateful - BUY IT!

Have you bought your copy of AVENGERS #4 yet? It's the long-awaited ish in which CAPTAIN AMERICA joins the team! Probably all sold out by now, but maybe if you're lucky you can still track a copy down!

As for X-MEN #4, they finally meet THE BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS! This one oughta be worth buying just for the swingin' title! Don't just stand there - find one!

Honest, if you never buy another war mag again, you've just GOT to latch onto SGT. FURY #6! Stan and Jack outdid themselves with this one - especially with the daring, dazzling, hard-hitting sub-plot - something you've never seen treated so honestly in a comic mag before!

Finally, we've got a treat in store for you in the next big ish of FF! Not only do we wrap up the THING-HULK battle in a burst of glory, but we add another great fighting team to the line-up! The title of FANTASTIC FOUR =26 is "The AVENGERS Take Over" - and this book-length super-spectacular demonstrates beyond question why FF was voted the world's greatest comic magazine!

We'd also like to recommend GIANT-MAN, THOR, DR. STRANGE, and IRON-MAN, but we're afraid you'd think we're bragging - and as you know, we'd never do that in this, the MARVEL AGE OF COMICS!! So long for now, guys and gals - we love ya all!

Gotta say that I'm enjoying the fight so far. If only someone had limited Stan's word count. I've been pulling for the Hulk this whole time, but I've got to admire the heroism and humility that Thing shows at the end.

Generally, I think that it is a bit far-fetched story that HULK is "deserted" by The Avengers. To me it never seemed like that during the Captain-America-is-back issue, so I never understood why he felt like that - except that the papers spun the story that way. I know that he was not on the "Sub-mariner"-mission with Cpt. America but I always felt that that was just the chain of events and not The Avengers abandoning HULK.

Bob Banner, eh. Still alliterated though...

At least this time Sue's not the only one who fainted. Reed did too.

I really did enjoy this one. Great fight scene, liked the cameo appearances, and all that.

I'll admit I was confused when one minute Reed's in a coma, and the next he's awake and talking to the gang. I guess they used the word a little differently back in the '60s.

Kinda felt sorry for Reed in this one. He tries so hard to help Ben, and well, you saw how he reacted. I was a little surprised to see how little space the Torch got here, too. Usually he's all about being in-your-face. I guess it's a welcome change :)

Great battle, great story, some great drawings (and some not so much... kind of a mixed bag in this issue).

Reading this, it's easy to see just how *good* Silver Age stories could be with the right creative team, characters, and story.
* There's something special about Thing/Hulk fights. I guess it's just that The Thing is really outclassed, power wise, compared to the Hulk. But, he still gives it everything he's got. It's so heroic. Jack does a great job of showing that in this issue.
* I've never read this FF/Hulk/Avengers two parter, before. And, I'm really excited to start on the conclusion.

I loved this issue. For a 60's comic, it gave the sense that Ben was fighting a losing battle very, very well. Honestly, fun issues like these are what make reading the terrible issues worth it.

I actually really liked a lot about this issue, which makes me happy because I thought the FF had been going a bit downhill. The amount of casual property damage with no repurcussions is back though, which makes me sad.

This issue was pretty epic in scale. You have most of the current Marvel U make cameos, the Thing fighting a battle that he is clearly out classed in, and you have Reed half dead trying to still lead his team. A highlight of the reading order thus far.

Look, I get that Stan didn't have wikipedia back then but he should at least have a list of names for characters as important as the Hulk, right? Bob Banner FTW!

That aside, this was an awesome issue! The order needed a kickstart after a lot of crap and this was it!

I'm glad Hulk was clearly more than Thing could handle, even back then but the Thing really puts up a good fight even so. This is probably the most heroic we've seen the Thing so far, perhaps as heroic as any character up to this point and it's nice to admire him instead of finding him so insufferable.

I also really liked seeing Reed fighting his own loosing battle too, there's some real character arc development going on in this issue.

This is the first time I've seen a comic in the order that gives the reader a real sense of just how powerful the Hulk is. This was a masterfully done issue, especially with how it tied in the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, and the Avengers. I'm eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this story.

For me it's the best FF comic in the order so far. It's an epic battle and it does a very good job showing how noble and selfless the Thing really despite all his brutish talk. There's a real sense of sacrifice when the Thing realizes he cannot win but painfully manages to keep fighting.
