Issue Synopsis

After the Howling Commandos have collected their personal mail at the barracks, including one from their former teammate Dino Manelli, Fury stops as he spots a new Japanese-American soldier being harassed by Wild-Man Wilson and his friend. The young Nisei manages to hold his own using judo, but Fury decides to intervene anyway. After the two bullies have left, Jim Morita introduces himself to the sergeant and tells him that he is waiting for the rest of his squad.

Then Nick Fury joins his men in their quarters and starts reading to the others the letter that Dino has sent from Hollywood. Manelli informs his friends that he has miraculously recovered from his wounds and is now able to walk using crutches. However, in order to fully heal, he needs an operation on his right leg and the only surgeon who could succeed at it is Dr. Warren Parker. Unfortunately, the specialist has been captured and is now held prisoner by the enemy on the island of Danton in the Baltic. Dino has agreed to make training films for the army since his experience as soldier can only make him more convincing. But the former Howler concludes his letter saying that he wished he had a chance to get back into the fight against the Nazis.

The whole team enthusiastically decide that they should go and free Dr. Parker. Fury dresses up to ask Captain Sawyer permission to take on this mission with his team. Knowing that he would get reprimanded if he agreed to their request, Happy Sam officially refuses, but he hints that a fueled and unguarded amphibious plane is sitting on the airstrip and he might not notice if it had gone missing for two days.

Later that night, as the Howlers board the plane, they discover that Sawyer has left them a map giving directions to the island of Danton. Unknown to them, the captain has also made sure the ground personnel would ignore the plane taking off. Sawyer also saw that they would find the required equipment for their mission. Suddenly, Jim Morita comes out of hiding and introduces himself. He informs the team that after the news of their not-so-secret mission has mysteriously spread around the base, he asked Sawyer permission to join in. His participation will provide additional help since Pvt. Koenig will need to stay aboard the plane during the operation.

As they reach the island, they team parachutes off. However, a Nazi scout plane has spotted the amphibious aircraft so Eric maneuvers his weaponless vessel to dodge his attack at the last minute. When the Nazi chases after him, Koenig realizes that he will not be able to elude the faster plane forever. He decides to let his enemy come close enough and shoots the pilot with his pistol.

After the other Howlers have landed, a Nazi patrol guard approaches to investigate the noise caused by Morita falling into a tree, but the young man knocks him out. Izzy steals his uniform and climbs onto the sentry platform that guards the prison camp. He gets rid of the sentry and takes his place, trying to spot the surgeon among all the prisoners. Lucky for him, a child falls hurting himself and a man rushes in to check on him. Izzy deduces he must be the doctor.

Meanwhile, Reb and Jim crawl under the wired fence and infiltrate the camp. Unfortunately, a prisoner spots them and expresses his surprise a bit too loudly so the Nazis hear him. Fury and Pinkerton create a diversion while the two young commandos grab the doctor to take him with them. Then Dum Dum and Gabe get inside as well to lend a hand, followed by Nick and Percy. But the Nazis outnumber their assailants by far and when the situation seems desperate, the rest of the prisoners decide to join the fight and strike back. During the battle, the Howlers can't help but notice Jim Morita's efficiency.

After Fury has tossed a weapon at him, Izzy lends a hand in the shooting but he is spotted by a Nazi who blasts the sentry platform down with his bazooka. The tower falls onto the electric fence, short-circuiting it. The Howlers take this opportunity to retreat with the rescued doctor. The prisoners create a human wall to prevent the Nazis for going after them, happy that the Americans gave them hope.

Just as the Nazis have managed to get past the prisoners, Eric arrives and lands his aircraft on the waters nearby. While the other Howlers rush towards the plane, Fury and Jim try to slow the Nazis' pursuit by tossing grenades at them. Then they join the others and the plane takes off.

On the way back, Fury explains their mission to Dr. Parker. The grateful surgeon agrees to operate Manelli as soon as he gets back to the United States. After they land, Jim crosses path with Wild-Man Wilson and his acolyte. He expects a re-match of their first encounter but instead, Wilson apologizes for his behavior, having heard how the courageous Japanese has volunteered to assist the Howlers in their mission. Then Morita meets the Nisei squad and tells them of his recent adventure while Sawyer announces to the doctor that a plane will take him to the United States in a few days.

Pointless story to fix the in continuity between the first annual and the current run. 3 stars.

  • That's my line – "A jolt like this is kinda hard on a guy's pride, isn't it?" (Private Morita, about his privates)

  • Despite a the widespread stereotypes of the era, I'm still surprised how Stan was ahead of his time in terms of intolerance towards racism.

  • As TheAmazingGatorMan points out, they had to find some way to get Manelli back in the team one way or another because not only one but two Annual issues whose stories take place at a later time include Manelli in the Howling Commandos. Whether it was a very, very bad continuity error to have him leave, or the whole thing was planned from the beginning, the writers should know they simply cannot change the roster too much until the storyline reaches the Normandy Landings. And they cannot kill any of the current members either until the Korean War.

  • That being said, I would not qualify the story as pointless since it introduces an interesting new character and the plot still holds well. But it's 3 stars for me too.
