Issue Review

RikerDonegal
   October 5, 2013
Steve Gerber steps in to finish the run.

And the issue is a mess. Hulk and Rhino wind up on Counter-Earth and lots of improbable coincidences drive the story. The worst of these is probably the arrival of Banner's son (what the heck was he doing there?!) and the issue ends with the two main characters being able to leave Counter-Earth because The Leader wants his ship back for some reason.

It's just fast-paced, uninvolving nonsense. I hope Steve Englehart can deliver something better... 3/10

That was pretty interesting. Actually wish they'd kept him there longer.. Could have been interesting. Meetin banner as banner, meeting warlock, etc.

Also, man Rhino has been through a lot of crap. More than most villains at this point. His life just sucks.

Holy cow we went from an Archie Goodwin written issue with the Leader in Rhino's body intent on ruining Betty Ross' wedding (which was supposed to take place this issue) to this Gerber/Thomas story in which they wind up on counter earth? Talk about a story with great potential flushed down the toilet lol and it only got worse when there was a battle in space that lasted for days (without Hulk running out of air or Rhino's air mask getting destroyed?) After that though the book got very good with Hulk confronting his counter part. But still, despite this being a good issue I was very disappointed that they skipped out on the melodrama that was to occur had Goodwin stuck around for one more issue.

I feel sorry for Glenn Talbot. We all know Betty doesn't love him as much as she loves Bruce. Their marriage is doomed.

Betty is just determined to be a married woman. Doesn't matter married to who, just as long as she's married.

Orbital mechanics do not work that way. I had to double check to make sure the issue was not written by Stan.

This highly fraught with ridiculous broken continuity set up does set up a really good story. The script is pretty good, Hulk refining his dumb talk more and more each issue. Trapani's inks are an improvement over his recent work; not stellar, but not bad either for the most part. I am a sucker for the Hulk soap opera. (3+)

I would have liked it if they spent more time on Counter Earth.

I don't see the point of having Warlock and the kids in like one panel, and then introducing a whole bunch of other characters. Was definitely interesting to see the direction people's lives take when no superheroes were allowed to exist, though I was secretly hoping that Rick Jones would be caught in the gamma bomb instead of Bruce and that we just saw ashes after. I may not like Rick...

This issue would have been so confusing to someone not up to date with Adam Warlock back in the day, or even now. Also, how ridiculous does this book want to become, come on - a days-long fight between the Hulk and the Rhino on top of a tiny spacecraft that flies pretty close to the Sun? I don't think so.

2 stars for what has already been said above. I wasn't really looking forward crashing the wedding. But, doing a 180 and going to Counter Earth and back in one issue is such a waste!!!

Cover Me - I like where Herb Trimpe signed his name!!!

Hot Air - For those complaining about no air, Rhino did say that there was an thin air shell around the craft. Of course, how he would know that? Also, the Leader says to activate the atmosphere simulator...

Cousin Oliver - I really think Adam & the Gang had to go home and watch Brady Bunch, or at least their version of it!!

Croaked - Poor Phrogg doesn't even get a listing...

?Question? - Didn't Jarella's race use the same shield design that the New Men are using??

Rebels - So was Porcunius and his gang originally with the Man-Beast?? Because, I don't think that the High Evolutionary would make more New Men. Since Adam's supposed to be taking care of the bad ones!!

'Nuff Said - "Then--there's an enemy alien loose on Earth!"-Counter Ross

This wasn't the issue I thought it would be. I was expecting a nice little fracas at the wedding but it didn't happen. Phooey! But Talbot gets the prize he wanted, and Banner didn't have to die like he insinuated a few times in the past.

Other notes:

Work smarter, not harder: One thing just occured to me - if the Leader could mentally take over the Rhino because he was so "simple minded," why couldn't he have just taken over the Hulk and made him commit suicide or something?

RSVP: I guess the Leader was too busy trying to get his ship back (and stranding Hulk and Rhino on Counter-Earth in the process) to crash the Talbot wedding like he promised last issue.

Animal Magnetism: It would've been pretty cool if Rhino stayed on Counter-Earth and joined Kohbra's little band! But that was quite a body slam Hulk laid on him on pg. 17 pn. 3!

Mirror, mirror: So if Counter-Bruce made it to the bunker on time to avoid the gamma rays, I guess Counter-Reed got sufficient shielding for his rocket so nobody got hit with cosmic rays. Counter-Peter wasn't bitten by that spider. Counter-Tony never got shrapnel in his heart and wasn't captured by the Chinese. Counter Dr. Erskine failed at the Super Soldier Serum. And so on....

3 stars. Still pretty enjoyable though. However, I'd hate to be in Bruce's shoes when he gets back to Earth....

Word has it that Counter-Oliver saved the Brady Bunch on Counter-Earth from cancellation and it lasted six more seasons!

Per Warlock #2, Counter-Peter got bit by a radioactive spider and died of radiation poisoning. Daaaang. Everybody else gets a happier counter-life, but the Parker Luck will not be denied.

Well, I'll give Mr. Thomas some credit. He went eight whole months before using his "just like the Marvel Earth, but without superheroes" Counter-Earth to tell a "when worlds collide" story. I'm genuinely surprised that the lottery winners who get to make first contact are the Hulk and the Rhino.

It's a dang hot mess of a story even if you're all studied up on Counter-Earth. The core concept of the Hulk meeting a well-adjusted paterfamilias Bruce is great, but it's surrounded by screaming inconsistencies.

The two that just killed it for me:

* Mr. Thomas drops an editor's note to stress that the Hulk *doesn't* know he's on a new planet. Four pages later, the Hulk *does* know. Zero explanation in between.

* At the start, the book is very clear on the High Evolutionary's vibrational mojo that hides the Counter-Earth. Where'd the mojo go at the end of the book when the Leader tunes into the climactic C-E fight like it's Sunday Night Football?

And on and on. This book was plenty disappointing all by itself; for this to be the first time Prime Earth heroes visit Counter-Earth is just tragic.

I'm with most of you - this was a fairly good story that suffered for the fact that it abandoned another, already good story.

I didn't know Betty and Talbot were ever married, so I was pretty surprised to see it actually happen.
