Issue Review
   October 11, 2013
I've been looking forward to Steve Englehart's first issue on The Hulk (because I'm a fan of his work) but this is a mixed bag. The issue handles the (messy) threads of the previous storyline fairly well and does a good job of setting up a new scenario.

The coincidence factor is high. Very high. So high it starts to bug me. The Hulk's spaceship just happens to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere directly above Thunderbolt Ross??!! Handy. Likewise, the Abomination coming back to life is mind-bogglingly handy.

Still. There is a lot to like here. The story is told with flair and The Hulk comes across as very powerful and very cool. The battle with The Abomination is exciting and interesting. Strangely, the Abomination thinks he is two years in the past. And while this is certainly an interesting twist in the tale, Englehart never actually does anything with it. It's also strange to see Ross and The Abomination working together. Huh?!! Very unusual reasoning here from Englehart.

Oh well. Mixed-bag start aside, I'm still hopeful that I'll enjoy the rest of Englehart's run... 6/10

Englehart seems to do a really good job humanising the villains.. I find myself more interested in them of late.

The Abomination was awesome. I'm still pissed that Peter David ruined him, then on top of it they used the bad version in the Hulk movie. What a freaking shame this classic character didn't make it to film.

At f,irate I thought it was silly, Abomination just happened to be right there. But then Ross gets all creepy dark, and then the las t page, which was awesome. So I'll give the stupid coincidence a pass.

Ross is really turning on the douchery in this one.

Again, there is no doubt for me, this is my favorite title. I always enjoy the slugfests with Abomination. The art is seldom perfect, yet I really appreciate Trimpe's style. The scripts in Hulk stand out because the characters have definite tone of voice giving the quality to develop personas further than everyone speaking in a similar tone. This inking isn't the best, but it's a good ol' green goliath knock down drag out. (4-)

John54542, you are so right, PD messed up a great villain....and the movie was extra disappointing.

How can anything survive a 2 year coma without fluids and nourishment?

I know that Abomination is ugly (it's his name) but his face is super deformed in this one...he looks like a mix between the Thing and a lizard...but with ears.
I honestly can't think of any way that Ross could have thought that plan was a good idea. Hulk is destructive, but more of a force of nature. Abomination is the same power with an evil mind.

Loved when Hulk called the Abomination "Big Ears." "Hulk does not like your laugh - sounds like crying" was a very good line.

If Abomination is concerned about being in a coma for two years... maybe he shouldn't pick fights with the HULK!

I'm giving it 3 stars because I like it when Hulk and Abomination wrassle, but the actual fight was too short for me!!

Cover Me - Hulk's about to get a bad case of Indian burn!!!

Green With Envy - Although, I don't buy Omnivac's explanation of losing control of the shuttlecraft; I do like the Leader pouting!!

Trash Talk - Hulk has some good lines, but the Abomination really zings Hulk but good!!!

'Nuff Said - "Hulk always comes home to Betty!"-Hulk of the House

This was a left-turn from what I was expecting. I think Gen. Ross just lost all his marbles here. The guy's made some head-scratching moves since that first gamma-bomb test, but making a deal with Abomination tops them all. Hulk or no Hulk, I have to wonder about our national security with guys like him in command.

Maybe the actual throw-down between Hulk and Abomination was brief, but it's one of the better ones I've seen them in so far. Both got some pretty good licks in, but I was looking for Abomination planning to go after Betty and Glenn in Niagara after the battle was over. The way Hulk punched him away near the end, he might do just that after all. But I was impressed with the way Hulk seemed to remember Betty as his love after his character development on Counter-Earth last issue. Quite an interesting turn.

3 stars, and waiting for Betty to learn who's back in town!

Even Ross knows it's just a matter of time before Betty dumps Talbot. I can't see any way he's even trying to protect her, unless it's by keeping her from discovering that she's actually not a very nice person.

I love how Ross already knows that his plan will fail. Poor Thunderbolt.

Does Englehart get to write EVERYTHING? Not that there's anything wrong with that but still...

Pretty good. I especially liked where Ross seems to be the bigger monster than Abby.

3 stars

I like Englehart, and I particularly enjoyed the way he writes Hulk's dialog, but I'm concerned that he's rolling back Ross's character development. Under Goodwin, he'd gone from an Ahab who makes terrible decisions to catch his white whale, to a leader and father who's trying to do his best for his Men, his daughter, and even for Bruce.

Previously, making a deal with Abomination would be exactly what he'd have done, but I felt that he'd grown beyond that in the last few years.
