Another winner.

Two months on from Issue One and The Defenders are still looking for The Silver Surfer. Or, at least, Namor is. With occasional assistance from Dr. Stranger. The search is yielding nothing, and then... the Surfer finds them! (Handy, that.) This leads to a battle between Namor and the Surfer. The battle could be seen-it-all-before boring, instead it's fast-paced and interesting. Maybe it's just cos I love these characters and find their squabbling interesting. Who knows?

Before long, Namor and Dr. Strange are back at Strange's place trying to pick up on the trail of the Surfer again. Again, it must be said: these characters are cool. There's something special about their team up. And it only gets better (a page later) when they add Hulk to the team.

They do eventually find The Silver Surfer and they do accuse him of being part of the bad stuff that happened in Issue One. His denial, and the argument, make very interesting reading.

Then we have the twist, which explains everything that has been going on. It's a big twist. And, to be honest, it is a tad far-fetched. Not so far-fetched, however, that it takes away from my enjoyment of the issue, or of the final battle. 9/10

That has to be the best display of raw power I've seen in one team so far.

Art is average. I'm not so sure this villain justifies being thwarted by this much firepower. It just kinda felt like a step along the way of a bigger quest. There are a few redeeming signs here (ie: Hulk with Cloak of Levitation & Dr Strange riding him. (2)

The cover is cool and story pretty good. I'm sure stories will continue to get better and better. After reading the Infinity Gauntlet & related stories its weird to see Doctor Strange & Silver Surfer as virtual strangers in these early stories.

The best moments for me were the splash pages of Surfer's return at the beginning and the four-on-one strike at the end. Some of the banter between the quartet is fun, but Namor and Hulk tend to fly off the handle at the slightest provocation, which can get tiresome.

The Hulk completely made this issue. Love his simple and honest dialogue.

That was thoroughly entertaining, from Strange riding a flying Hulk, to all the banter and good battles. My only complaint would be that Doc Strange, being the Sorcerer Supreme should not need help in a one on one battle with another human sorcerer.

I thought the moment when the villains revealed themselves was surprisingly creepy. Otherwise, the heroes were great and the bad guys boring. This is still the best team-up in all of Marvel.

3 stars for Namor wiping out the Surfer's rad moves in the pipeline!!!

Cover Me - Calizuma's costume is colored different, and his hand turned green from the spell!!!

Spread 'Em - Great image of Surfer leapfrogging Namor!!!

Bros - For a minute there, I thought Strange was going to show Namor his man cave!!!

Jaundice - @Drax: Ironic that they're actually colored right for this issue!!!

Opening Act - Calizuma??!!! Sounds like a 90's jam bad, or a Red Hot Chile Peppers song...

'Nuff Said - "Shut up, monkey! Hulk does not want to hear you!"-Hulk, who doesn't monkey around...

I think the purpose of the story was to get the Surfer into the fold. And yeah, his presence puts this motley little crew into a whole other power class. They were pretty formidable with just the three of them before, too.

But the villain here was just kinda meh. The whole battle seemed pretty anti-climatic, other than the banter between the team members. The Defenders actually have some excellent chemistry, but it'll be tough for the creators to come up with some worthwhile opponents.

3 stars. One thing for sure: the Hulk here is starting to steal scenes like he did in the first Avengers movie!

I got through a surprising amount of this without hating the Surfer, that's the longest he's probably ever spent not whining. And then he went and spoiled it all.
