Issue Review

Basic, but good.

The story starts with an attack from an old foe of Doctor Strange (who hates him) and that's all we need to know to get the story up and running. He hates Strange and wants to best/kill him. The issue is divided into two battles, with a bit in the middle where (most of) The Defenders take a world tour (!!) and the bad guy regroups, plots and comes up with a new method of attack.

The foe is interesting, the battles are interesting and so is the method by which the heroes (led by Namor) gain victory. Most of all, though, it is the heroes, themselves, that hold the reader's interest. No Hulk this time, but Silver Surfer is back and Valkyrie makes a strong addition to the team. 6/10

Sweet cover on this one. This story is all over the place, but it's a pleasant enough read.

I think it's kinda weird that Namor is the one that keeps noticing that stuff isn't right. Before when they showed the illusion of all their trapped girlfriends, and now figuring out that the attack wasn't real in this issue. Seems more like it would be more Strange's forte, but he buys it every time.

Ok, Silver Surfer flies up into space so as to gain full speed when he smashes into the cube, and while in space we learn that Earth has a double star for a sun, and has at least 19 moons :P Come on Sal, try to keep it more real than this!

Blue cape, grey bodysuit, gold belt... My first thought upon seeing the cover was "what is Batman doing on the cover of the Defenders".

I like the camaraderie they're establishing between these heroes It's nice to see Namor especially, working and playing well with others.

A standard Silver Age story competently executed; I was reminded of Captain Kirk talking computers to death.

Yup, smoking that Jamaican "incense" gives me bad dreams too.
This was another story that was fun, but it's main plot point made no sense. Sirius learns of his power from having a nightmare, and if he's having a nightmare, then he obviously isn't in control of his dream. But all of a sudden after learning of his power he can control his dreams, and use it to attack the Defenders. But then apparently he's not aware that he's dreaming, because finding out is what defeats him...what?!

After so much fighting amongst themselves, it was nice to see the Defenders getting along - bit it was a little jarring too. Why is the Surfer so willing to see them as his friends? They don't really have much history together. Namor's possessiveness toward Valkyrie also seems to come out of nowhere. The story is fun as long as you don't think about it too much.

Just 2 stars. This would've been better if Nightmare was actually attacking Strange through Cyrus Black!!!

Cubist - Whew, for a minute there, I thought the Cosmic Cube was attacking Strange Sanctum!!

Green With Envy - Cyrus Black's henchmen need better outfits! They look like a mismatch of the Green Party and the Ku Klux Klan!!!

No Prize - Strange calls Zenn-La...Zeon-La!!!

Pinup - Nice two page spread of the Defenders!!!

'Nuff Said - "MISSSSSSSSSSED!"-Sssserpent of Rham Lama Ding Dong

Recommended listening for this issue: "The Devil Went to Jamaica," a parody of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." You'll then learn, like Cyrus Black, that that wasn't incense!

Fun issue. The Defenders are starting to gel as a team, except for the Hulk vacationing in Canada at the moment. Here are some other notes on the story....

The Ditko Files: Early in the Dr. Strange series in Strange Tales, it was mentioned that Doc and Nightmare had a prior undocumented history. Now the same appears to be true for Cyrus Black. Sounds like Doc really built himself a reputation as a sorceror well before his first documented case in Strange Tales #110.

Alien Up: Interesting to see the Surfer owning his actions at the end of issue #3. For those of you commenters who called him out for it, consider yourselves mythologically No-Prized!

The Dream Police: If the Defenders had lost that rematch, it would've been embarassing to say that some guy beat 'em in his sleep!

3 stars. Inconsequential, but fun. I still think the Surfer puts the Defenders in a completely radical power class; it could be interesting to see them achieve that potential.

What? Cyrus knew he was dreaming. So telling him he's not real shouldn't have any effect. It should go like:
Of course I'm not real! But I'm still going to kill you!
And then Namor is all like damn, I really thought that'd work. Sorry guys.

It's another psychologically fascinating issue of the Defenders. We've still got Valkyrie unpacking her unique origins in a very self-aware way, and now Namor is starting to sidle toward her in a paternal-slash-romantic fashion. It's not exactly laudable but it is interesting.

Now the Silver Surfer comes in displaying textbook bipolar symptoms. It's completely novel, but somehow it works, and it expands his character more than the fifty-odd appearances that have come before - he starts looking like a real person rather than a cosmic stage actor.

I'm amazed by how much better Steve Engelhart is with this team than with the Avengers. For whatever reason, he's way more confident in giving the Defenders flaws and interpersonal friction. That makes them incredibly entertaining even when they're faced with a scattershot plot like this one.
