Simply terrific. Fast-moving, and full of genuinely surprising developments. I can understand why this story arc is considered a classic. 10/10

Really enjoying this. For once it's actually a believable, well-crafted scenario leading heroes to fight each other. I also totally buy that Cap especially and Sub-Mariner would be the first ones to see a bit of sense (Although Subby's explanation was a little contrived).

A super-hero vs. super-hero fight which ends because they decide to talk. It's worth an extra star sheerly for the rarity.

Great issue! The guy that answered the door at the castle that shot Swordsman kinda looked like Jim Steranko LoL!

Hahaha, I love Val.

This may be the best arc I have read minus the Death of Gwen.

And the Defenders are clobbering the Avengers 5-0 (okay, one was a default, but still), with only the strongest member of each team left to go. Gonna be a barn burner.
While I enjoyed the Cap vs Subby battle (using his shield to skip Namor across the water was awesome), the Val vs Swordsman really stole the show here. Great sense of pathos with the Swordsman, and his seemingly earnest desire to be a hero and not let the Avengers down. I will be pissed if the just immediately turn him into a bad guy again after this is over. Val and Swordie both had more character growth in this half an issue than I think we've seen any hero have in any issue so far.

Great issue but it annoyed me a bit that several characters were reduced to a defining "trait" and not a name. There was the nazi and his castle, and the american who bought the castle. Their names aren't important but the dialogue becomes a lot more stuffy without them. But that's a very minor issue.

It was great that Cap and Subby were the first to see that they were being played. This arc is awesome, and I hope the rest of it is just as good if not better.

  - Bob Brown obviously enjoyed getting to be Hal Foster for a little bit

- Did The Swordsman kill the guy? Is that going to be a problem with The Avengers?

- That's how you STOM a guy Cap!

- It makes sense that it would be Cap and Subby who make the breakthrough

Significant issue here in the fact that we get a look into the psyche of the Swordsman: even if the Avengers don't know it for sure yet, he's telling us readers that he is indeed a reformed man. Important plot point here, and definitely worth remembering from here forward.

And on the subject of the Swordsman, @dadoodoflow brought up an interesting point. What if the Swordsman did kill that guy? Of course, Swordsy was shot in the back, so is this enough to warrant manslaughter in self-defense? Let's keep a close eye on this little development.

Enjoyed both match-ups. Valkyrie and the Swordsman was great for the back-and-forth banter alone, and as mentioned by other commenters above, Cap and the Sub-Mariner figured out both teams are being played. Apparently their memories from WW2 are still spotty otherwise they'd recognize each other as brothers-in-arms. It's interesting to see their interactions with each other pre-Invaders.

4 stars. The best one-on-one is yet to come.

Just going to say, the credit really has to go to Namor for them figuring they're being played, he's the one that started talking and explained it all. Cap just decided to believe him. It's a big change from the Namor of the past.

4 stars for Cap and Namor showing the youngsters how it's done!!!

Cover Me - I hate it when Cap's shield is shown to be flat!!!

Set The Mood - I recommend listening to The Black Crowe's "Evil Eye"!!!

Dormammu - I love him ignoring Loki, but he does need a costume upgrade! Since he doesn't seem to wear his headress anymore!!

No Prize - Val keeps losing her shoes!!!

Ginormous - That is one giant lock!!!

Rogue - @CeeNote12 & alendor: I agree, there definitely seemed to be more to the American in the Nazi castle?!!

You're All Wet - @dadoodoflow: Or how about the "CLAM" sound effect?!!

Little Red Hot - I'm suprised no one mentioned Sunfire's appearance!!!

'Nuff Said - "Enough breast-beating, Avenger!"-Valkyrie...but can you really blame Swordsman...

Yeah, Swordsman got shot because he was robbing the guy. 1973 Marvel just had no respect for property rights.
