Time-travel as the Hulk and his team wind up in the 12th Century! Odd villains, but a packed and enjoyable issue nonetheless. Impressed by the fact that - amid lots and lots of plot/story - Steve Englehart writes great character scenes/moments for most of the regulars. 9/10

Why am I instantly bored by stories containing The Black Knight? This was a lackluster wrap-up to an otherwise solid arc.

Had to work really hard to resist the urge to knock a star off just because it said "Next: The return of Xemnu!" in the last panel.

After the last stellar issue, this one was really disappointing. A very lackluster way to end one of the best arcs in the order up to this point.

The explanation of this issue's events reads like one of the "Comics, Everybody" features on the Comics Alliance website, except those are explaining decades of a character's history instead of a few months. Every sentence during Dane's story, I was saying to myself, "Wait, what?" I'm glad he's happy in the past and all, but this was just a weird issue. It did have some nice character interaction, especially between Hulk and Dr. Strange.

Wow, Wanda and Strange were real jerks to Fury. And Strange and Xavier would make good friends, talking about mind cleansing over tea.

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:

This felt like an entire issue devoted to an epilogue. 3 stars, a mediocre ending to an epic arc.

  duncanm Says:

While I certainly enjoyed this arc, this final issue kind of made it all pointless, no? This all started due to the Defenders being tricked into getting the Evil Eye to save the Black Knight, and he no longer needs saving, as he's quite happy where he is.
Also kind of getting sick of nearly every Defenders story ending with everyone leaving and saying "maybe" they'll hook up again. I get that they all have their own stuff to do, but a little commitment to the team would be nice.

Yawn. So... I wonder if they'll deal with the whole stone body thing when the dark Knight comes back to the future?

  gumchewspit Says:

Stiff writing in this one, but at least it wasn't just a Dr. Strange winning the day in one panel like so many earlier issues.

Don't know why this issue is considered part of the avengers x defenders arc. It's really another story.

Can't wait for The Black Knight to return to his real body and discover himself covered with Dr. Strange's clothes and various other things he needed to a place to hang.

If I saw a catapult, my first thought wouldn't be "We are in the past!" Quite the jump there... correct, but a jump.

  Russ Says:
  2017-07-15 10:59:30
Well, this did seem more like a denouement or afterthought to the rest of the story, but it wasn't horrible at all, just a little unfocused as if it were just knocked off by the bullpen: "Oh yeah, now that we did what we really wanted, we'd better address the Black Knight part before we get nasty letters accusing us of forgetting about him!" I wouldn't have blamed them for the oversight; the Black Knight during this time WAS easy to forget!

Some other notes:

Vacation: About the Black Knight and his lack of use in Marvel stories up to this point, I don't blame him for wanting to stay with King Richard. Being cooped up in that castle and living as a statue for all those months, the poor guy needed the exercise!

What's in a Gnome?: If Steve had named one of those gnomes Grimble Gromble, what rock musician would he be paying tribute to?

My name is Mud: Hawkeye's arrows couldn't damage the gnomes, the Ebony Sword couldn't slice them, the Hulk couldn't pound them, and magic was useless against them. But Namor douses a little water and they just melt away like butter in the Sahara Desert? Uhmm yeah, let's go with it.

Context: Though there's some historical accuracy, I don't think Europeans vs. Muslims during the Crusades would've been used as a backdrop for this story if it were written today. Such is the state of our world in the year 2017.

Roam if you want to: Hawkeye was way out of place on the Defenders. Granted, he brings a unique skill set to the table, but the group relies more on the heavy hitters. His presence was like Tom Petty joining AC/DC.

3 stars. Quite a letdown this story from the rest of the arc, but at least it did address why the Defenders went through all that to get the Evil Eye.

3 stars for the Black Knight really living a past life!!!

Cover Me - The gnome looks more like a giant twisted smurf!!!

Missionary - Would the Black Panther say "Amen"? Since his tribe worships a Panther God.

TEMAX - I know the gnomes are powerful and all...but, jeez they look silly!!!

Chivalry Is Dead - I think Sir Percy the original Black Knight should've made an appearance!!

Flyweight - @Russ: If you think Hawkeye's outclassed...wait til you get to Nighthawk!!!

Porta Potty - I was hoping Prester John would be sitting on his magical throne!!!

'Nuff Said - "This is a monster--but not our monster!"-Abdul
