Issue Review

Epic-size tale (set at the center of the Earth) with plenty of references to contemporary Marvel Comics. Love that!

Captain Marvel doesn't do very much. Most of the action is shouldered by Spider-Man and (a very glum) Mister Fantastic. 6/10

Issue Synopsis

Attempting to find out what happened to Captain Marvel at the end of the last issue, Spider-Man goes to the Baxter Building to consult Reed Richards. However, as he enters the Fantastic Four’s base, he gets caught up the in the FF’s security precautions. Luckily Mr. Fantastic is on hand to turn off the security devices and Spider-Man quickly explains why he has come.

Spider-Man tells Reed about the Alpha and Omega gems and about the Basilisk, and explains how Captain Marvel got caught inside the Omega gem and then both the gem and Captain Marvel disappeared.

Reed reluctantly agrees to help. He uses a device that he’d previously constructed to trace the gem using its ‘Kree’ energy. He finds that the trail leads to the Centre of the Earth. He and Spider-Man take the Fantasticar and, using a tunnel that the FF had used before, head down to the Earth’s core.

Arriving at the Center of Earth, the two heroes are immediately attacked by the Mole Man’s servants. They are overwhelmed by sheer numbers and paralysed by gas. Completely unable to move, they are taken to the Mole Man, who announces that he will let them gaze upon his greatest triumph before they are put to death.

The Mole Man shows them a massive laser canon, powered by the molten magma of the Earth’s core and focussed using the huge Omega Gem that luckily fell into his hands just a short time ago. The canon will be used to cause unspeakable devastation on the Earth’s surface in revenge for the people who have mocked the Mole Man. Captain Marvel is still imprisoned inside the gem and the Mole Man explains that when the laser canon is fired, the energies flowing through the gem will kill the Captain.

Spider-Man and Mr. Fantastic are thrown down into the magma pits, but they both manage to use their powers to save themselves. It turns out that neither of them were paralysed after all. They’d held their breath when subjected to the gas and they just pretended to be paralysed in order to get close to the Mole Man and learn his plans. They are immediately attacked by a horde of the Mole Man’s servants but are saved when a beam of energy transforms the minions to glass, and then a second beam shatters the glass into tiny fragments. The energy beams came from the Basilisk, who reveals that he followed Spider-Man and Mr. Fantastic hoping they would lead him to the Omega Gem.

When the Basilisk lays claim to the gem, the Mole Man unleashes more of his never-ending supply of subterranean servants. The Basilisk proceeds to destroy the subterraneans as fast they appear.

While the Basilisk and the Mole Man battle each other, Spider-Man and Mr. Fantastic attempt to free Captain Marvel from the gem. Mr. Fantastic announces that he has a plan, but it’s risky. However, at that moment the two villains notice what the heroes are up to and the Mole Man puts both Mr. Fantastic and Spider-Man out of action with his powerstaff. The villains then turn on each other again with the Basilisk disposing of the Mole Man with a blast from his eye-beams. This leaves the Basilisk free to turn his full attention to the gem and the imprisoned Captain Marvel.

In desperation, Captain Marvel touches his wrist bands together. There is a brilliant flash of light and when it clears, Rick Jones is standing next to the gem, which has now returned to its normal size. At that point the entire cavern begins to shudder. Before he had been defeated, Mr. Fantastic had altered the laser canon’s settings so that the energy feedback from it caused the magma pits to erupt. Rick flees for safety, but the Basilisk won’t leave without the gem and, as he reaches for it, he is swamped by a wave of molten magma.

The Mole Man pleads with Spider-Man and Mr. Fantastic to help him, but before they can do so the cavern shudders again. A violent explosion obliterates the spot where the Mole Man had been standing and forces the two heroes, along with Rick, to flee for their lives.

Spider-Man, Mr. Fantastic and Rick make it to the Fantasticar and back up through the tunnel to the surface. Rick then once again touches his bands together to swap places with Captain Marvel and the three heroes part company.

Wouldn't Peter's Spider Sense have warned him that The Basilisk was following him around town?

Defective spider-sense due to, er, gem powers, I guess?

Why do heroes constantly break into each other's headquarters when they want to chat? I swear Spider-Man alone has triggered their security several times in the past.

I wonder if invulnerability to lava is one of Basilisk's powers?
Reed is an even bigger jerk than usual in this one. I hope Sue comes back soon because Mopey Richards is just plain unbearable.

Captain Marvel, damsel in distress. From what I can tell, Rick Jones could have shown up anytime, they we just waiting for the right time, or the right page count.

  - Seeing Gil Kane as penciler fills me with glee, seeing Everybody listed as inkers does no such thing

- Boarding House Reach (noun): The act of reaching across a table to get desired food, often considered poor etiquette because it invades others' personal space.

- The most awkward time of any young Kree male’s life is when he first plays with his gems

- Flivver (noun): A cheap car or aircraft, especially one in bad condition (I’m pretty well-read and that is the first time I’ve ever encountered that word, anyone else?)

- Marvel loves the word “pinioning” The Dumb Magician was just pinioned over in Defenders

- Nice, subtle touch that Mole Man doesn’t know who Spider-Man is

- How does someone who flys by blasting beams out of his eyes follow anyone inconspicuously?

- The inking by committee really didn’t get in the way of Gil Kane (is layouts were less dynamic), even the story wasn’t that stupid

If there's one attribute Marvel Team-Up has over Spidey's own book, we not only get to see him work with other heroes but fight different villains that otherwise wouldn't work in context. That's what makes this title fun, although at times exasperating too. I mean, Mole Man?

I did like that the recent developments in the Fantastic Four mag were incorporated into this story, even if meant we had to see mopey Reed. However, I did think he was a little "matter-of-fact" about the others leaving the team. Or, I guess he's really having trouble dealing with it. You know these scientist types; emotions are hard for them.

3 stars. @dadoodoflow: I've seen the Thing use the word "flivver" a couple of times before, though I don't recall which issues. The word must be a New York thing.

Good thing that magma wasn't hot or anything, given how close they were to it.
