Issue Synopsis

The Human Torch is flying over the Catskills, accompanied by his friend Wyatt Wingfoot on a personal sky-cycle. Below, they see a truck carrying explosives has crashed into the side of a cliff and is in danger of exploding. While Wyatt takes the truck’s drivers to safety, the Torch uses his flame to create a dome of fire around the burning truck. When the truck explodes, most of the force is the explosion is contained within the fiery dome. The Torch does a quick repair-job on the damaged road, and then he and Wyatt fly off, leaving the grateful drivers behind.

As Johnny and Wyatt take a moment to relax after their short adventure, an alarm goes off on the sky-cycle indicating that one of the FF’s most dangerous foes is at large.

Meanwhile, in a laboratory hidden under a nearby isolated cottage, a scientist, Professor Pentecost, is carefully bathing a super-strong plastic capsule in energy. Suddenly, the capsule explodes, and Blastaar the Living Bomb-Burst is free once more. Blastaar goes to attack Pentecost, but the scientist is ready for him, pressing a button on a device that inflicts incredible pain on Blastaar. Pentecost allows the pain to continue until Blastaar swears to obey him. Pentecost then tells Blastaar about FAUST, a fully automated factory, with adamantium walls that he had designed and helped build. The completed factory had been stolen from him and now, in revenge, he wants it destroyed.

Elsewhere, the Hulk is wreaking havoc on a construction site. His rampage is brought to an end when he feels a strange annoying buzzing in his ears and goes in search of the source of the sound.

When darkness falls, Blastaar, accompanied by Pentecost, makes an attack on the FAUST factory. Several blasts from Blastaar’s hands cause even the adamantium walls of the factory to begin to crumble. However, the attack is interrupted by the arrival of the Torch and Wyatt Wingfoot.

The torch makes a direct attack against Blastaar, but he is repulsed so strongly that his flame is extinguished and he finds himself hurtling helplessly through the air. Luckily, he is caught by the Hulk. The Torch tells the Hulk he will lead him to the source of the annoying buzzing sound and takes him back towards the factory.

In the meantime, the police have arrived at the factory, along with the owner, Ferguson Blaine. Blastaar easily deals with the police and Pentecost has his robot guards capture Blaine and take him into the factory.

Blastaar continues to work towards reducing the factory to rubble when the Hulk arrives. The Hulk tells Blastaar that he is making too much noise and attacks him.

While the Hulk fights Blastaar, the Torch enters the factory in search of Pentecost. He finds Pentecost and Blaine, but Pentecost refuses leave even though the factory is collapsing around him. He says he intends to kill Blaine in revenge for what has been stolen from him. The Torch melts Pentecost’s weapon and the man comes to his senses, realising what he was about to do and also what he has already done in unleashing Blastaar on the World.

Outside, the battle between Blastaar and Hulk is heating up. The Torch arrives and instructs the Hulk to pick up pieces of the Adamantium factory walls and wrap them around Blastaar. The Hulk completely encases Blastaar in the adamantium wreckage, squeezing it tight, before tossing the metal ball out over the Atlantic where it sinks beneath the waves. The Hulk is now happy because now that Blastaar has gone, the buzzing in his ears has stopped.

The Torch dismisses Blaine’s thanks, saying that the man should be thanking Pentecost, since it was the scientist’s idea to encase Blastaar in adamantium. As Pentecost is led off by the police, the Torch points out that Blaine’s greed has cost science the mind of a brilliant man.

Well the myth of how strong adamantium is was certainly debunked here. Since it said it was an adamantium alloy I imagine that means that this is not the exact same stuff that Ultron and Wolverines claws and bones arelined with/made of.

So basically the Hulk just drowned Blaastar in an adamantium tomb?

This story was away too contrived...but I still enjoyed it.

I thought the art was terrible, and if one guy wasn't green and the other on fire, I wouldn't know who these guys were. However I found the story to be incredibly entertaining.
For some reason it really tickled me that Hulk thought that people were throwing boys at him.

Kane isn't my favorite, but this was terrible by his standards. Johnny was way off spec. Story started okay, then went downhill and the ending sucked.

  - I am conditioned to recoil at any solo Torch story, team-up or not

- This is why you should read widely kids, don’t name things F.A.U.S.T. and expect everything to turn out well

- That was actually…not bad

Clearly a rushed piece of filler here. Gil Kane's art looks like it was knocked out with little thought and ditto for the inks; inking by committee here is telling. The story itself smacked of a better-than-average Torch solo story from Strange Tales. How high is that bar to clear? Probably the knees, my friend.

It's hard to fathom any story being a team-up whenever the Hulk is involved as one of the partners. Lately, he's been pretty entertaining, so it was worth a shot. The Hulk's comment about flying boys continues the trend of humorous and childlike observations we like the most about him. I did note that each time the Torch and the Hulk have met, it's as adversaries; the last time was Fantastic Four #112.

2 stars. Wasn't bad, just a pedestrian effort, and not as fun as MTU is supposed to be.

This lost a star for the whole gamma radiation being why Blastaar gave Hulk a headache thing. He's fought the Leader and the Abomination so many times without trouble, it just seems silly that it would suddenly be a problem now.
