| ISSUE SYNOPSIS |
| |
The issue opens with us learning about the home of the Norse Gods, Asgard, and more specifically Loki, who is the God of Mischief. Loki had been trapped by the other Gods in a tree, where he was to remain until his plight caused someone to shed a tear. Having been trapped for centuries in the tree, Loki had gained control over it and commanded a leaf to break off and fall into the eye of Heimdall, who happened to be passing by. This caused Heimdall to shed a tear and Loki was set free, vowing to get revenge on the one most responsible for his capture... Thor!
Loki uses his magic to locate Thor, discovering that he is on Earth entertaining children in a hospital. Loki makes his way to Earth and disguises himself so as not to stand out. Reaching the hospital, Loki discovers that Thor had left and had no idea where he was, and not wanting to attract attention onto himself decides to create a disturbance that would bring Thor to him.
On the way back from a house call, Dr. Don Blake and his nurse Jane Foster hear cries of help. The see several people who had been turned into negatives of themselves. Dr. Blake runs into an alley where he is unseen as he transforms himself into Thor. He then makes his way to the negative people in need.
By spinning his hammer very fast in his hand, like a top, Thor is able to create anti-matter particles and blow them over to the negative people causing them to transform back into positive people. The crowd of onlookers cheer for Thor as Loki in disguise makes his to Thor. Thor doesn't recognize Loki so he sheds his disguise, which jars Thor's memory.
Loki challenges Thor to battle, with Jane thinking of how lovely Loki's name is and how dashing and romantic he seems. Loki uses his magic to make a carpet begin to fly so that they can battle in the air. Thor follows Loki into the air by spinning his hammer overhead, which causes the sun to reflect back into his eyes each time it passes. Loki uses this to hypnotize Thor and put him under his control.
Loki commands Thor back to Earth so that he can use him to cause mischief, but he realizes that if Thor were to be snapped out of the trance and had his hammer, that he would be no match for Thor. So he orders Thor to give him the hammer, but since the Hammer belongs only to Thor, he would not release it. Loki then tries to have Thor throw the hammer away in a lake by telling him that a sea beast is attacking. Thor throws the hammer into the lake, but then returns right to him. Loki next conjures up another Thor and tricks the real Thor into giving the hammer to the image.
Having succeeded in getting the hammer away from Thor, Loki orders him to release the animals from a nearby zoo. Loki is then distracted by a group of people who are trying to lift Thor's hammer. While Loki is distracted, Thor transforms back into Dr. Blake and is set free of the hypnotic spell. Dr. Blake manages to reach the Hammer and transform back into Thor in order to finish the fight against Loki.
Loki uses his magic to gather the pigeons in the area to him so that he can make his escape, but Thor hurls his hammer at Loki while hanging on to fly at him. This forces Loki to land and take cover in a crowded theater. Loki taunts Thor up onto the stage and uses his magic to bring the curtains down onto Thor, trapping him momentarily. Thor blows the curtain off of him and resumes his battle.
Loki runs into a subway station and throws several people onto the tracks with a train fast approaching. Thor rushes onto the tracks and bends them so that the train goes right over the people without harming them. With the innocent saved, Thor chases after Loki again and spots him in the air, but with so many people around, Thor is unable to spin his hammer to follow him.
With Thor unable to follow him, Loki takes to damaging store display for pure enjoyment, but quickly grows tired of it. Thor spots an opening when finds large sections of pipe and hurls one at Loki. Trapped in the pipe, Loki falls into the water, where his magic is useless, and is rescued by Thor. With Loki still wet, Thor takes him to the Empire State Building and hurls his hammer with Loki attached back to Asgard. |

Did Stan Lee think that all women were helpless to resist falling in love with every man? Susan Storm hides a picture of Namor. Wasp states that Kang is good looking. Now Jane Foster has a thing for Loki because he's so "dashing and romantic?" |

It would be safe to assume from his writing that the man didn't really see much action. |

What I learned:
Thor's hammer can make anti-matter particles.
Anti-matter particles can make people positive.
So if you see someone being a gloomy Gus, give them some anti-matter particles, and turn that frown upside down.
When Thor sees his brother, he refers to "ancient legends" to remind himself who he is. |

When we first see Loki's close-up in the last panel of page 2, his true identity is revealed -- Leonard Nemoy as Spock! Who knew that crafty half-breed Vulcan was actually the Norse god of mischief! |

I don't quite understand one thing: Is there a REAL Thor somewhere?! Because if not, why do all the other Norse gods know exactly who he is but Thor himself doesn't? I can't get along with the idea that a human accidently changes into the god of thunder and has to find out all about himself, while everybody else already knows... |

The fact that Dr. Blake turns into Thor right in front of people is beginning to bother me, and it's only been three issues. The fact that Jane Foster goes gaga over what seems like everyone except the Russians is also annoying. An average issue, which is disappointing since Loki deserves better for his debut. |

Heeeeere's LOKI! And much like Dr. Doom, the first appearance of what will become a classic arch-nemesis is not quite as glorious as you'd think. But again, we're talking Silver Age here, so we deal.
This is also the start of bringing in more of the Norse gods (even if most of them are just seen from behind for a panel or two) and myth into Thor's comics which are a welcome new direction and helps separate them from the other Marvel supers out there. |

Stan repeats himself, here. Loki hypnotizes Thor and Thor only breaks free because he switches to Don Blake after losing his hammer.
This is really almost identical to an earlier Hulk issue (The Ringmaster one, maybe? I forget) where Hulk breaks the hypnotism by turning to Banner.
I think this bit comes up a LOT over the years. But, these two examples are really close together.
Maybe, Stan was overworked...

That hammer sure is versatile. It's indestructible, can conjure up rain, thunder and lightning and apparently generate its own anti-matter particles. The one thing it actually can't do? Love. Hmmm. Chew on that one. |

Well, this one didn't quite hold my son's attention as well as Ant-Man did, but he was excited to see Thor again. We watched the Avengers again this afternoon, and when Loki showed up in the comic, he was quick to point out the connection. He knows nothing of Asgard, Norse mythology, or any of that, so none of the Asgard stuff meant anything to him. He still likes Thor, of course; he likes them all. But this one wasn't nearly as impressive to him. Still, some action, some neat 'Thor' moments, and he's happy. |

I very nearly gave this issue a three, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Loki is just too much fun in this issue, and he's the first opponent that I feel has been a real threat to Thor in the reading order. I'm looking forward to reading more stories that he appears in. |

one of the more enjoyable early thors. a little peek into asgard and a nice debut from loki. the rivalry is established. loki comments that thor has not been seen for ages and it also seems that thor has to remind himself who loki is, as if hes been asleep for a long time and only recently awakened. |

Typical girl, attracted to the jerk just because he's handsome. She doesn't care if he's a good guy or bad guy. Don Blake better keep this a secret, Jane seems pretty shallow and I don't think he'd stand a chance... even though he's a doctor. |
