ISSUE REVIEW

by Webslinger: Despite some plotholes pointed in other comments this by far the best issue so far.

This is the first time Reed Richards is working on his 'Fantastilab' up to something. I imagine if I was high when reading it when the bad mood ray acts, making the women throw the tea all over her husband!!!! Best joke ever (so far)!! And the plot is convincing as well.

A bad mood ray, this idea is really awesome!!

I figure the shrinking ray acted only on living things, so the comming planet could not be affectet. And about the enlarging ray- if only Reed knew about Ant Man! but no one did so far.

Hard to believe is that a developed civ didn't care for space exploring.

I think this is a great issue, this is the way I like the Fantastic Four to be!!!

-Except from the fact that Sue Storm has for a long run a second role play....

ISSUE SYNOPSIS

The story opens on Kurrgo, an inhabitant of Planet-X. In order to keep his home planet from crashing into an asteroid, he sends a robot to Earth to capture The Fantastic Four, whom he believes are the only beings in the galaxy capable of saving Planet X from imminent destruction.

Meanwhile, The FF are preparing to travel to Washington, D.C. for a banquet in their honor. The group boards The Fantasticar and Ben notices Kurrgo’s spacecraft entering the atmosphere. Reed explains they have no time to investigate, as they are due in the Capital immediately. As the team make their way, Kurrgo’s robot lands in an isolated valley and uses an “Atomic” scanner to try and locate them.

After arriving in Washington, the group receive accolades and a trophy from members of Congress. At that moment, the robot finds the team and activates a “Hostility Ray” which affects the entire city. Falling under the effects of the ray, the mood of the banquet quickly changes as the FF are declared menaces to society and the crowd turns on the heroes. The group are forced to use their powers and hurriedly escape via The Fantasticar.

The robot notices the getaway and engages them immediately, forcing Reed to attempt several acrobatic maneuvers to evade the pursuing spacecraft. Unable to shake the assailant, the group land atop The Baxter Building and the robot announces that team must accompany him back to Planet X.

Outside, throngs of people affected by the hostility ray are gathering and preparing to storm the building. The robot informs them that they will no longer find quarter on Earth, and the only chance for refuge is by accompanying him to his home world. Reed reluctantly agrees, and the team travels to Planet X.

After arrival, Kurrgo regales the team with the scientific triumphs of his people, save the impending collision with the runaway asteroid, and pleads with Reed for assistance. Ben and Johnny are hostile at first, with The Torch attempting to utilize his “Super Nova” power, until a cool-headed Reed and Sue convince them to stop.

Working under the tremendous pressure of a 24 hour deadline and a planet that is beginning to shake apart, Reed works frantically to produce a reducing gas that will allow the planet’s populace to escape aboard the only available spacecraft. Having solved the problem, Reed and team narrowly escape aboard Kurrgo’s craft as the planet succumbs to gravitational forces caused by the imminent collision. Meanwhile, still on the planet, Kurrgo hastily hatches a plan to control his people on the new planet, but is left behind to perish, a victim of his own power-hungry desires.

ISSUE'S LETTERS
DEAR EDITOR:

I’m a great fan of the FANTASTIC FOUR and think it is tops! One thing puzzles me, though – Was THE THING just as bad-tempered BEFORE the accident, or did the radiation which made him a monster also affect his brain?

Warren Jacobs
Yonkers, N.Y.

Good question, Warren. Actually, before Ben Grimm became THE THING, he was a rough and ready jet pilot, hot-tempered but good-natured, always ready for a laugh or a challenge. In fact, before telling you more about him, an idea hit us. Perhaps we ill, in a future issue, devote part of story to the lives of the Fantastic Four BEFORE they got their strange powers. How about it, fans?

DEAR EDITOR:

My favorite FF character is THE HUMAN TORCH, but that’s because I’m fourteen and happen to like teenage boys. I also like MR. FANTASTIC, and I sometimes feel sorry for THE THING. Is REED RICHARDS (MR. FANTASTIC) any relation to THE INVISIBLE GIRL – or THE HUMAN TORCH?

Barbara Stock
Pontiac 18, Mich.

Many readers have written to ask what the FANTASTIC FOUR’s relationship with each other is. Apparently many of you missed our first issue, so to briefly explain: THE HUMAN TORCH and THE INVISIBLE GIRL (Johnny and Sue) are brother and sister. MR. FANTASTIC (Reed) had been a good friend of Sue’s, and THE THING (Ben) was the pilot they hired to fly them on their ill-fated space voyage.

DEAR EDITOR:

I like your mag, but let’s watch it, huh! In chapter three of FF #5, you show MR. FANTASTIC stretching up to kayo a pirate. They didn’t make rubberized clothes in those days, you know!

Alan Carlson
Cadillac, Mich.

Oops!

DEAR EDITOR:

Good show! I am of course referring to FF #5! Jack Kirby’s illustrating shows definite improvement. The cover was especially excellent, as were the battle scenes on the pirate ship. HUMAN TORCH is unmistakably your best character; he is certainly deserving of his own mag, as a reader recently suggested. As for THE THING conflict, I feel he (or “it”?) should remain basically the same as he is because this unique character adds color to the group, which makes it comparable to no other. The name MR. FANTASTIC is too egotistical, yet “Mr. Elastic” would be even more ridiculous.

Melvin Herbers
Elyria, Ohio

Regarding the TORCH, Mel, and all you other readers who have clamored for Johnny to appear in another magazine, don’t miss STRANGE TALES #101, on sale now. You’ve got a pleasant surprise in store for you!

DEAR EDITOR:

Much as I like even numbers, I think adding one more member to the FANTASTIC FOUR wouldn’t hurt. Besides, “Fantastic Five” sounds just as good – even better. He could be a scientific genius and assist MR. FANTASTIC, or a wizard who uses magic to fight crime – or perhaps an alien from space. What do you think?

Sal Anzaldi
Pompton Plains, N.J.

Why stop with just five, Sal? Why not the “Fantastic Six, or “Ten” or “Eighty-Three”?? Well, as usual, we’ll leave it up to the fans. We’re sure our other readers have some very definite opinions on this earth-shaking subject!

DEAR EDITOR:

As an English schoolboy reading THE FANTASTIC FOUR for the first time, may I say how intrigued I am with it! I have been thrilled with the story about SUB- MARINER, and hope I will miss none of the future copies so that I may keep up to date with this smashing magazine.

John Davidson
Newcastle-on-Tyne 3,
England

How ABOUT that?!! We may ask for a State Department subsidy for building up good will! Many thinks, John – we hope you’ll continue to enjoy the adventures of your American cousins!

DEAR EDITOR:

Congratulations to “The World’s Greatest Comic”! It is the most original, most exciting, most realistic, most surprising comic in the universe! WE like the way the FF are always reading comics! (Showing their high mentality!) The costumes are great! One bad thing though – The FANTASTICAR looks like a bathtub! Why not call it the “Fantastitub”? Having the THING able to change back to human at will would be ridiculous! Some readers think it’s a good idea, but we think it’s ECHH! We’ll keep buying FF till you stop printing them!

P.S. Your wisecracks are also ECHH!

Rusty and Larry Bush
Forest Hills 75, N.Y.

We had a dandy crack to answer your letter with, Bushes, but we won’t! Satisfied?

THAT WRAPS IT UP FOR THIS ISH, FANS! BY THE WAY, WE THOUGHT OF A GREAT WAY TO GET REVENGE ON ANYONE WHO MIGHT WRITE US A TOO- CRITICAL LETTER! WE’LL SPELL HIS NAME WRONG WHEN WE PRINT IT! OH, THE POWER WE EDITORS HAVE!

  What I learned:

There can't be a fire inside HQ because the building is fire proof. Human Torch is a figment of their imaginations.

The heat of a supernova can get within inches of people and not hurt them as long as it doesn't touch them.

It's possible to move 5 billion tiny people around a planet and get them on a ship in a matter of minutes.

Also:
Kuurgo's robot's face on page 6 looks just like Snake Eyes from G.I. Joe. Wonder if Larry Hama read this issue.

  One Question:

Why couldn't they shoot the reducing gas at the incoming planet and reduce it to a pebble???

That's exactly what I expected them to do, too! The whole rounding up 5 billion people in a disaster-stricken world in a matter of minutes is just too much to buy. Just loading 5 billion tiny people onto the ship would take hours, if not days! Oh well, I guess you can't exactly approach comics with an expectation of realism -- otherwise there would BE no Fantastic Four to begin with!

I also thought the reducing gas was for the incoming planet. And when I first read the reducing gas part I immediately thought of Ant-Man.

I also noticed a "typo" on the last page where Reed says that there was no "reducing" gas instead of enlarging gas.

Decent issue despite the plot holes, but hey, it could have been far worse. Suspension of disbelief is needed for this issue.

You know you've been reading too many silver age comics when you just take this plot in your stride. (Hey, at least there were no communists.)

Love how the one military guy was shocked that the ship could have been from outer space. Sure, it's only the FOURTH alien invasion in the past year in the Marvel Universe. What are the odds?!?

A decent issue, though it is definitely flawed. I liked it mainly for the interactions between the members of the FF(particularly Ben and Johnny, who appear to have reached the point where their bickering is mingled with camaraderie).

I actually quite liked the design of the inhabitants of Planet X, even if I LOATHE the generic name of their(former) planet.

I forgot to comment on this one. The Fantastic Four is still a big hit with my son, and he was fascinated by the sci-fi story. He is a fan of the whole team, and can readily identify each individual member. Kurrgo was 'mean', and the robot was 'cool!' He didn't really understand the end, but we went over the high points of the story, and he did remember chunks of it. So while it isn't Ant-Man level awesome, it's still awesome.

@UTDdestroyer - no, it's not a typo. There was no ENLARGING gas, meaning they can't return to their former sizes. There WAS reducing gas, as we can see it worked, making everyone tiny.
