Issue Review
   May 8, 2017
The first appearance of Doctor Strange. And itís actually pretty good.

Thereís a lot of story in these five pages, and itís an entertaining and interesting read.

A man comes to Strange for help with an unusual problem. In the end, it turns out the guy isnít as innocent as he would appear and when the truth comes out, our hero is in danger.

Before that, DS makes a (totally pointless) visit to his mentor, and faces a major foe.

This is a series that arrives fully formed. The hero and his world are established before this adventure, and Strange even has a reputation. Even if, in this first story, he needs his mentor to come rescue him.

Issue Synopsis
In a room a man tosses and turns, as he wakes up from his nightmare he remembers the name of a Doctor Strange. He has heard that Dr. Strange dabbles in Dark Magic. The man ravels to a mysterious residence in Greenwich Village, the dwelling of Dr. Strange. The man is let in by Strangeís servant. Dr. Strange is their in the room with a striking amulet around his neck. The stranger outlines his predicament, his nightmares. A haunting figure of a man in chain reoccurs in his dreams. Strange offers to enter the manís dreams, alone in his room Strange utilizes an ancient incense burner and conjures his metaphysical spirit. His spirit (without physical form or mass) travels through walls, across the ocean, continents, and arrives in a hidden temple n Asia. It is the dwelling of Strangeís master. The ancient man tells Strange to rely on his amulet in times of danger. Strangeís spirit returns to his body.

Now in physical form, Strange tells the man he will enter his dreams. After the man is asleep, Strange conjures his metaphysical form to enter the dream. A desolate land appears with a foreboding figure in chains, Strange contacts the figure. After questioning the figure, it is learned the he is the embodiment of evil the man, Mr. Crang, has done. Then a figure appears on horseback, it is Nightmare, Strangeís arch foe. Nightmare threatens Strangeís life.

Back in the dark room the man wakes to see strange unconscious body. As Strange is in a trance the man pulls a gun from a drawer. In the mystique realm Strange and Nightmare look on. Strange calls to his master; Master hears Strange through the void and realizes the amulet is his only chance. As Master concentrates, the amulet begins to glow and then a magic eye appears. A blinding ray shoots out and stops the hypnotized man. Dr. Strangeís spirit takes advantage and dodges past nightmare back to the physical world and his body. Strange approaches the immobilized man and relieves him of his weapon. The man confesses to his robbery of Mr. Crang and gives up. Strange says it will be the only way for the troubled man to sleep again.

5 stars for the 1st app of Dr. Strange a name spoken in whispers no less!

Cover Me - Like leisch mentiones above. No cover blurb for the good doctor? Cool intro though.

The Ancient One - He's the Aunt May of the mystic world!

Hidden Years - Are there any later issues that show when Nightmare and Dr. Strange first met?

'Nuff Said - "Doctor Strange knows all!"-Wong

I love Ditko's use of light and shadow on these old Dr. Strange stories. He's always so good at drawing desperate, down-on-their-luck guys in seedy back alleys.

Also, in the very last panel, it's fun to imagine Dr. Strange is flipping off the reader.

The premier Doctor Strange story is a very interesting new concept. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this character goes and what/who he encounters.

And now, the real Dr. Strange, not the weird concept from an earlier Iron Man (?) issue.

-Damn! Did I really used to like Ditko's art? His Doc looks really bad--check out the wonky face. Is he sleep walking?
-Not much of a story, but it's a nice intro to ol' Stevie boy.

Did not know much of Doctor Strange origin so it was nice read to see where the Midnight Son/Defender came from. Art is meh!

Into of the real Dr.Strange and Nightmare. Not a long story but an interesting start. Nice to see where it goes.

So the good doctor already had something of a reputation before this first outing? Interesting

Only five pages so it's a sampler more than anything, but this is so different from anything else thus far in the Order that I'm looking forward to expanded stories.

First appearance of Dr. Strange... first appearance of the eerie Nightmare (one of my all-time favorite Marvel villains)... and drop-dead gorgeous Ditko artwork, to boot! An easy three stars!

  • That's my line Ė "Doctor Strange knows all!" (Dr. Strangeís servant)

  • The one thing that is great with this series, is that whenever the story gets too weird or makes no sense at all, it still feels right. It IS magic after all!

  • That feeling of confidence the man had at the beginning, I sure wouldnít have felt it. Strange would have spooked me out!

  • The whole atmosphere surrounding Dr. Strange, his home and his universe is eerie and psychedelic at the same time. The artwork is very effective at conveying a sense of mystery and dread. I cannot say I like the way Ditko draws faces however.

  • As a kid, I was never a fan of Dr. Strange. Iím curious to see how I feel about it now. So far, so good! 4 stars.

I went with the full five stars for this because I've read enough (i.e. too many) five-page Ditko weirdies to know that this is exceptional by a lot of measures. Better art, meatier plot, a bit of genuine characterization - and, of course, the historic value of introducing Dr. Strange along with some of his iconic allies, villains, and concepts all at one go.

This is a great five star story. Fantastic Ditko art and a great story

A great story, but only gets three stars because Dr. Strange doesn't actually...do anything. He just shows up and the Ancient One actually fixes the problem.
