Issue Synopsis

In "The Red Skull Strikes" we are taken back to the early 1940's, before the United States has entered into war with Nazi Germany. Private Rogers, also known as Captain America, and Bucky drive home Major Croy, who orders them back to base. After they leave, the Red Skull makes his first appearance in Major Croy's office, knocking him out with a special gas that will make him loose his memory for months.

Rogers and Bucky discover the scene, and they don their costumes to go investigate. Hoping to cover more ground, Captain suggests that they split up. Bucky is the first to discover something, and he spies out the Red Skull with Nazi conspirators and a ruthless gang. But before he can leave, he is captured. The Red Skull realizes who Bucky is, but it is too late, and Captain America comes bursting through the door. Together, Cap and Bucky are able to defeat the Nazi soldiers and gang, and tie them up. But the Red Skull gets away.

The next day, Rogers observes the arrival of General Curtis and Mr. Maxon to witness the launch of his new test plane. However, once in the ground, the plane crashes to the ground, killing the pilots. Steve notices that Maxon does not seem at all effected by the tragedy, and suggests that he and Bucky try to find out more. They go to General Curtis' home, only to find him already knocked out. Rushing past him, Captain America spots the Red Skull trying to dispose of the housekeeper. The two of them are able to overpower the Skull, and unmask him. Beneath the mask is none other then Mr. Maxon. Maxon seizes a small pause and escapes, but Captain vows to stay on his trail.

2 stars for the faux Red Skull...

?Question? - The character appearances lists him as the real Red Skull, but it is not. Did I miss a retcon? Also, he is listed as the Teacher. Which issue was he named that? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Clean Livin' - Cap smokes a pipe??!!

'Nuff Said - "Nonsense!! Private Rogers and Mascot Barnes, you are both dismissed!"-Major Croy

Ever get the feeling that Jack Kirby thought that the apex of human physical conditioning was the ability to do a full split in mid-air?

I'll bet he was a big fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme's in the 80s.

*Knock knock* on secret evil lair door.
Nazi lackey opens the door. "Who's there?"
Red Skull: "Fool! Don't open that door!"

Hired help these days...

I actually got the impression that this was the real Red Skull, wearing a John Maxon mask that never got removed. (Huh? Gets confusing.) Anyway, this is a retelling of the 4th story in Captain America Comics #1, with a few retcons, just as the previous issue with Sando and Omar was a retelling of the second story. It's too bad Stan chose to take credit for both stories instead of giving credit where credit was due.

  • That's my line "He hasn't got much stamina... Has he?(Bucky)

  • Stan announces that the story was written in the 40's style. Okay, but what is that supposed to mean exactly? I reread the original Golden Age story. Interesting differences: in Silver Age edulcorated version, no one dies and the Red Skull uses gas instead of an injection. So again, what is the 40's style?

  • It was interesting to see the huge improvement on Kirby's art.

  • That physician on page 3 strangely looks like Dr. Blake.

  • Using the shield as a bowling ball feels a bit over the top, no matter how fast it is rolled.

  • I too was disappointed at this Scooby Doo appearance of the Red Skull. 2 stars.

Huh, I think this is the first time someone actually dies in a plane crash in the main order so far.

I kind of wish these old Cap stories were in chronological order at the beginning of the Order.

The problem is, what if you have a comic that comes out in 2017 that takes place during the Captain America time period? Or what it its a retcon that changes something dramatically? Then suddenly you have stories with wildly varying styles that are supposed to be read in sequence, or stories that contradict each other.

I think it makes much more sense to publish them as they were intended: as flashbacks that take place in the middle of the then-current continuity. Putting them in chronological order would be like rearranging The Godfather Part II, which would ruin the story beat in favor of a linear timeline.
