2 stars for the Leader scheming!

Breakdown - Ugh, I can't stand Mickey Demeo's finishes. They take away from Kirby's layouts.

Playtime - I was wishing that the Humanoid could of played with his army men for a little longer!

'Nuff Said - "Are you trying to tell me how to engage an enemy, Major??!"-Gen. Ross

The nipples on the Humanoid are strange. Almost as strange as the artwork on Pg5/P5. Looks like Hulk is eating spaghetti out of Rick's mouth.

Hulk is slowly going downhill. It's almost reverting back to it's former self. Now he's speaking intelligently again. He's also going to start using a machine to make him stay as the Hulk again. Hopefully this is just bump in the road we can get over.

In the midst of battle: "Let's regroup behind yonder ridge!" Hahaha!
OK, my rolling with intelligent Hulk stops now he is "colder, fiercer, more violent than Dr. Banner" - that's a regression back to the first volume Hulk of yore. Just hope the Leader's involvement can keep this arc from going stale too quickly.

Actually, I think Banner's and Hulk's personalities are inter-meshing here. He's keeping Banner's intelligence, but also has the Hulk's savagery. I think this version of the Hulk is working and staying consistent, at least within the narrative. But I do see one point here; Stan or other writers haven't been overly consistent with Hulk's personality since his debut. I do wish they'd settle on SOMETHING so there's a status quo. That'll give any future changes more impact.

  • That's my line "Don't ever call me 'Doc'! Dr. Banner is dead! From now on, I'm just the Hulk!"(Doctor Hulk)

  • I'm sorry Doctor Banner, but according to the laws of physics,, accelerating while your are jumping up is impossible... unless you have transistorized jets, of course!

  • Of course, the Hulk could not use conventional artificial respiration technique because it would have looked too much like two men kissing! The sixties were really not ready for that!

  • I agree with the above comments. The inconsistency in the Hulk's personality only proves that Stan has still not decided what to do with the character. I hope he makes his mind soon. Also, Kirby only did the layouts on this one. Leaving Demeo with the rest of the artwork was an awfully bad idea! The job is terrible! Too many things went south in this one, so 1 star.

  1. Pn. 2-4: "Our speed's increasing every second!" Blllllaaaaarrrrggggghh! No it's not! Banner, your license to practice physics is forever revoked.
  2. Pn. 2-5: "The mushroom cloud just missed us!" Aaargh. No. Just no. The mushroom cloud is neither instant nor the primary danger. The first danger is the instant radiation blast, at the speed of light. Next comes the fireball. That makes sense for them to have just missed but still be expanding. But unless Hulk is protecting Rick with his body—which he's clearly not—Rick is very, very dead. I honestly don't know what harms the Hulk, so I can't say if he should be dead or not. But Rick is a pile of ash.
  3. Pn. 3-2: Oh, yeah, the shockwave, the third danger. Rick's dead again. Hulk can't shield him against that. His insides (well, his nonexistent insides, as he's now a pile of ash) have been turned into jelly.
  4. Pn. 4-2: I'm sure Stan did not know this, but "clean" nuclear bombs are in fact a possibility.
  5. Pn. 4-3 Today I Learned that ground-zero nuclear blasts do not disintegrate plastic.

Yes, the writing's definitely deteriorating. Sad. Under Ditko, the writing was improving every issue. ★★½
