Wow, that was FUN! A basic, action-filled story. Its a fill-in, flashback issue. But way better than the regular run. This is what I hoped the SHIELD series would be like when I started reading it. 8/10

It was an improved retelling, but still a retelling

Filler. I'm surprised, given the cover, that they didn't try to emulate Steranko's style.

I'm tired of retelling filler issues.

I have never liked Nick Fury as a character. The only reason why I'm reading these comics is because they're in the order. Steranko's art has been great, but an issue without it? Eh...

Steranko cover was nice, the Frank Springer insides were less nice. It doesn't mean it was bad, tho. This was better than first glance. The script is fast paced and although the silliness of all the made up tech is far-fetched, we get a great run of action, so nevermind the reality. Backgrounds are full and varied. We do have crazy panels here and they aren't very attractive. But the big arrows full of text, I do really like. (3)

The opening three pages are stellar, but the rest of it is a pointless recap issue with Springer as a poor substitute for Steranko.

Well, I say "pointless". The original is three years old at this point, and, one imagines, not as readily available to a reader of the time as it is to us, so I see the point, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating of an intermission.

Really liked the cover, reminded me of a sixties James Bond movie poster. What was inside was disappointing though.

Never been that fond of Frank Springer's work, but it was better than usual in this issue.

I loved this story the first time around and I love this amped up re-telling as well.

I actually didn't mind Springer's artwork. I thought it was capable. Certainly nothing like what Steranko has been doing the last few issues, but as far as comic book art of the time, it was at least polished.

Roy Thomas surprised me by telling a fairly brisk tale without all the usual wordiness. What words there were served the plot. Of course, where I wasn't surprised was that Roy was doing a re-telling of an older story, and effectively takes a major step backwards in terms of the direction of the title. Hearing Fury wax poetic about fighting in "the Big One" just makes it seem so stale.

I feel like Stan was getting nervous about the direction Steranko was taking things (including the recent problems with risque artwork), and this was a reactionary step to try to "right the ship" in his eyes. Dunno.

This wasn't horrible, but I prefer the original story from Strange Tales #135 over this one. This story attempted to stretch out that first tale into a 20-page story. It didn't really offer much beyond that.

Frank Springer tried to emulate Jim Steranko and didn't do a bad job at all. Clearly he's been taking notes on the style and feel, but if this issue served to prove a point, it's that Steranko is in a class by himself.

2 stars. The story I have about Steranko's departure from the book is that he was none too pleased about the replaced panels from issue #2, and had a falling out with Stan on it. His presence in comics was diminished after this; we'll see him again sporadically on pencils in some other books, but his career shifted to other mediums after this.

Springer tries, but hes no Steranko, and hes no Kirby. I love the cover.
