I just love Steranko's art. Pity he did so little :(

  Great art...truely stupid story.

It read more like a story from "Weird Fantasy" or similar that they just shoved Nick Fury into, but it wasn't horrible.

Beautiful cover, but it doesn't make up for the story inside.

SHIELD has become truly psychedelic! The art, the story, everything is truly great!

Not bad, but I miss Steranko's craziness.

Nice Steranko cover. The Insides of the comic are not so nice. It's like an old Larry Lieber space story full of "irony"...so, really, it's just corny. The art work is ugly and hurried. There is a lot going on with the art, it's just not very well done. The one-off story is nothing original. The script was kind of the best part with Fury's awful, slang-filled "english" well in character. I could barely keep my eyes open. (1)

There seems to be an identity crisis with this issue. There seems to be little to no continuity from issue to issue like the other Marvel mags of this time. I wonder if that has anything to do with Streranko's inability to draw it monthly? This issue felt like a filler, one that had been sitting around for awhile.

  Alex Daily Says:

I'm not remotely interested in this book if Steranko isn't drawing it.

3 stars. Yes, it's sad with Steranko leaving, but I didn't mind the story. I mean in 6 issues we've had 2 Scorpio stories, 1 horror mystery, 1 Noah story, 1 origin, and now this. So next issue, SHIELD could be fighting the Teen Brigade!!!

Cover Me - As others have already said...brilliant!!!

Baby Daddy - So what trouble is Val in that made Fury take off...pregnant perhaps???

'Nuff Said - "speech is so slow and primitive, so unnatural, I--"-Guard 18

Is this the first "sideways" 2 page spread in a Marvel comic?

Frank Springer's artwork isn;t great, but is better now than later in his career. His Invaders issues are horrendous.

How does Fury have time to do all these things? They're not giving the director of SHIELD enough work if he can decide to go on random test flights.

Great cover... but talk about bait and switch! NOTHING like that on the inside!

Fury has a rude awakening on Pg4/P1. That will teach him not to smoke in bed.

Not too crazy about this one. The story wasn't too bad, but there just seemed to be some strange disconnect between script and art. I kept feeling like the camera was pointing in the wrong direction. Although I did like the bottom of Pg4 and the splash page on Pg13.

And like Locust75 says, what sort of "trouble" is Val in? Could this be related to the shooting death of an unarmed civilian from the last issue? Again, there seems to be some sort of disconnect with the script... like we've missed an episode or something.

I dunno... I was originally liking the SHIELD stories within the Marvel Universe, but this book seems to have gone off the rails.

Well, I give Frank Springer some credit here. The mag still has a slight cutting-edge feel in the art department, but at the end of the day, Jim Steranko simply set the bar really high. Just compare the cover with the contents.

The story itself has the general feel of one of those pre-Marvel/Atlas stories you'd find in an anthology title. It wouldn't surprise me if they'd recycled the plot and inserted Nick. It makes me wonder if Steranko's quitting the book played havoc with deadlines.

I think @GroovyGolem might've hit on something here. Val in trouble; I think it's to face a tribunal of sorts for killing Pickman last issue. Honestly, I'm not sure how that one should turn out.

3 stars. I didn't think this was horrible, but I have a feeling that SHIELD's glory run is over with Steranko's departure.

I'm coming back to this after skipping at the time as it wasn't available on MU/comixology. I often find out hard to like the earlier issues when coming back but I quite enjoyed this one. I read the steranko issues at the time so I think my enjoyment wasn't hampered by comparison to those issues. 3 stars from me.
