2 stars for Umar upstaging Dr. Strange!!!

No Prize - Doc mentions forgetting that the Mindless Ones can cast spells. Even though this is the first time they are shown casting spells!!!

V.I.N. CENT - When Doc poses as one of the Mindless Ones. It reminds me of the Black Hole movie's ending. Where Dr. Reinhardt is trapped inside the robot Maximilian!

'Nuff Said - "Take heart fair Clea!"-Duped Dr. Strange

Thumbs up for the Black Hole reference! :-D

And a big thumbs up for Marie Severin's artwork in this issue! What a great change of pace. I thought Everett did an admirable job, but Severin's take on Strange blows his out of the water.

I get the sense that she was a last-minute replacement, simply because the backgrounds are practically non-existent. Yet, the foregrounds are packed with detail and dynamic poses... I love it! Just check out Page 4 for a great example of this. Every panel is great, right down to Doc Strange's mussed up hair due to exertion.

And Severin draws Umar with some truly deliciously evil expressions. Check out the cool light and shading effect on Pg8/P6!

Best of all, Umar doesn't end up looking like Namor in drag!

I liked the back and forth outwitting each other in this issue. In the past, it has generally been just throwing out a new made-up spell to counter the last one. This one stays within the established rules. That being said, though, Strange really should have seen through the Clea ruse or at least have been suspicious.

I disagree on Severin. I like her art, but it lacked the otherworldliness of Ditko/Everett. Similarly, I miss Dennys O'Neil's writing. He was wordy, but in a way that added color and elevated the art. Stan's, well, Stan. He spends half the time filling up panels describing what the art is showing us.

So, we had the 1940s version of Strange (Bill Everett) and now we have the 1950s version with Marie Severin's art.

Oh boy. The mindless ones sure do bring a mindless plot along with them this time. Only Stan's astonishing astronomical alliteration make this somewhat enjoyable.
