Ha, so the all mighty power of the Netherworld's ordes, wich is whispered among immortals can't even tire the thunder god. Is it yet to early to expect a more challenging/dangerous menace?

An epic ending to a great storyline.

Really loved this story arc....... Thor and Hercules really work well in a story arc together so far, and i'm looking forward to seeing more of Herc in the future.......

Hercules didn't really learn a lesson in humility despite him being a total wuss when he was looking for a fighter.

  Great art, bad writing.

Hades explains at the beginning that Hercules can go free even if Thor loses, thus changing the whole plot into "Thor sacrifices himself and battles to undo it" without anyone noticing.
Thor not only pulls an Alcestis sacrifice but combos it into an Orpheus and annoys Hades so much that he rescues Hercules much like Hercules saved Alcestis. Mythological!
Way back when, Thor just has time to dye his hair for a disguise (with fireplace soot, maybe?) but not enough time to change his clothes.
Jack draws various weapons with incredible Kirby perspective, and also manages to create a version of Cerberus that doesn't have any canine resemblance or three of anything. He was tired of being stereotyped: strike out boldly, Jack.

I was a little disappointed in this finale. The weapons and armors were great, but it seems like the Underworld was a series of boring rooms with beige walls, with no interesting backgrounds. The battle ended abruptly and the writing was just adequate. Feels like a missed opportunity.

I like how Hercules is like a teenager with all that power and Thor is the voice of reason, it makes for a pretty decent story.
In Tales Of Asgard I like how Volstagg is always bragging how tough and superior he is, but he's just the opposite. He reminds me a bit of Danny McBride in his show “Eastbound & Down”. Good Stuff.

I thoroughly appreciated this arc. I hope this means that Herc will battle next to Thor more often. 4 stars for an epic arc du triumph!

Also, is the power of a thunder god inclusive to changing ones hair color at will? Hmmm...

3 stars for the pinnacle of Pluto!!!

Cover Me - Such a great image of Thor descending into the Netherworld!

Ne'er-Do-Well - Like others that commented; Cerberus, Da Crusher, and the rest of the Denizens should of been tougher for Thor to handle. And, no silly big wheel weapons!!!

Team Sif - Tana Nile should of had Jane take a long walk on a short pier!!!

Home Sweet Home - I know Pluto didn't want to see his beloved realm demolished by Thor, but couldn't he have intervened by defeating Thor. So that he could retire down in Florida?

'Nuff Said - "Enough speech-making! 'Tis a time for wild carousing!"-Harokin's Barbarian

Well... the Netherworld doesn't look that bad. I could think of worse places to be ruler of.

How many of you would have liked to have seen Steve Ditko's version of the Underworld instead? I know I would. Kirby's just looks like one of Dr. Doom's castle lairs.

The best part of ToA was to hear Volstagg basically say "If you need help, just ask yourself 'What would Volstagg do?'"

One of the things I always loved about the Thor series was the theological tie-ins and it seems like finally they are making author off of that universe as well, I like it!

  Commenting as I read here...
Cerberus, the pet of Hades (Pluto?), personified? Don't like it. Does it have basis in ancient Greek art or literature? I don't recall it. I may have been out of my depth with Norse mythology, but I certainly know my Greek gods and monsters.

Now he has a helmet with a ray of destruction... ugh! Stan, Jack... who's to blame here?

I'd have expected the Netherworld to have less machines and more demons... and I'd have enjoyed it more too!

It appears the cloak of mortality isn't the only garment the mysterious Tana Nile casts away! Naughty naughty!

  Russ Says:

If this story were written today, it would've gone on for 3-4 issues, easy. Kind of a disappointing ending, but it WAS logical. This was a very fun arc to read.

4 stars. Oh by the way, Tana? Some guy named "Hef" wants you to call him back. Says he wants to put you in some magazine.

Title: I expect some symphony orchestra/metal band to do a song called "Thunder in the Netherworld!"

What did Pluto expect (and why is he Pluto and not Hades?)? Did he think his precious Netherworld was gong to stand up to the God of Thunder? The same God of Thunder that has torn up Asgard at least twice in past year? Seriously?

  RobinHoodMtl Says:

  • That's my line – "Love! An emotion fit for only fools... and weaklings!" (Tana Nile)

  • Ouch! This is definitely NOT the Cerberus I was expecting! Little disappointed, here! Kirby missed a great opportunity to design a very cool creature. Also, as kungfufan pointed out, I would have preferred demons and monsters instead of machines. The Greek Underworld had so much potential in terms of characters and landscape. It's too bad they were totally ignored.

  • On the same note, I don't mind having mythologies of different origins intertwine. But since the beginning of this arc, I'm truly bothered with the names for the Gods of Olympus. Stan got most of them right, except for the two most important in this story. Hercules and Pluto should have been called Heracles and Hades. Or call all the other gods by their Latin name.

  • OK. I'm still intrigued by Tana Nile, whatever she is.

  • Thor is such a party pooper!

  • This was a great mini-arc. The outcome was unexpected and surprisingly good. And one more star for Thor and Hercules being BFFs again. 4 stars

Enjoyed this issue. Kind of funny that Pluto called it off when he saw the mess Thor was making of the place. Also has anyone else noticed they’re mixing the Roman and Greek names for the Olympians? Greek - Zeus, Ares, Hermes; Roman - Hercules, Pluto, Neptune, etc.

Right? So annoying. I wonder if these events ever get brought up again and if so It retconed or does the odd mix continue throughout the Marvel continuity.

Great arc but Pluto definitely called it quits too easily and the netherworld could have been a bit more creative. Cerberus was disappointing too.
