Kinda cheesy... good to see Professor X again. Much as I hate cheap resurrections, Professor X was a really significant character even in issue 42 or whatever. It was a bad idea to kill him, so I'm glad they brought him back.

Normally I would slam the s**t out of an issue like this--what with the hokey return of a presumed dead character (Yes, I knew it was coming at some point) and another half-baked alien invasion fought off in 60 minutes and all tied up with a bow. But for some strange reason, it all kinda "works" here.

I call shenanigans on this issue, cause the issue that showed him die was not a trick.

Man, I'd almost managed to forget how much I hated Prof-X in these early comics, and suddenly there he is again.

I can buy Xavier linking millions of people's minds to power a mental attack. But Havok "boosting them with his cosmic rays" how does that work? And how can Havok "transmit" them to Cyclops? And why does that increase the power of his optiblasts? And why does Iceman need to "compensate for the terrific heat" when it was established just a few issues ago that Cyclops' blasts don't generate heat?

The return of Charles Xavier seems too much like jumping out of the box. But nevertheless I feel it is the right time for him to return. I'm glad he's back. The story of this issue wasn't very good though.

Hi again Professor X. Not glad to see you're still a total dick.

I don't know what to say about this issue..oh wait! PROFESSOR X IS BACK! Oh and the plot was a little confusing for me and maybe not properly executed. The ending was weak like the good old days! No complaints on the art work (you should probably know why by now). Havok and Polaris just made it to my "hate-list" because of their attitude. Yep, I think that's all that I have to say..did I forget to mention that Charles Xavier is back from the dead?

Professor X is back I'm sure they're looking for ways to keep the book afloat.
But, as usual, X-Men and aliens just don't mix well.

Go away old man, they were doing fine without you...... every time you die or leave I dance on your grave and every time you come back you remind me how much I hate you in like five minutes......

plus everything Chry, Xythe and jfpj1991 said......

This was an interesting story. It was very cinematic and I could see a show or movie easily being adapted from it. I think it would have been better as a cross series story arch, but it was decent as a one issue romp.

What was the point of boosting Cykes optic blast? How did it mentally assault the aliens?

Agree with Thunder about that 2 page spread. It was gorgeous.

Without the awesome Adams art, I would definitely say this is on par with the worst Ant-Man and solo Human Torch stories.

Not one thing in this story was justified, everyone was acting out of character, the subplot with Professor X was f*cking awful, Havok and Polaris were wasted, the villains were the absolute worst, too much dialogue.

The. Worst.

3 stars more for Neal Adams art than anything...although, he draws an odd looking Pro. X!!

Credit Due - I wonder why Denny O'Neil wrote this, and not Roy Thomas? Was it really because he was on vacation??

Pro. Xavier Is A Jerk - I always felt sorry for Jean having to keep Xavier's "death" a secret!!

Bait & Switch - @Gram91: It was a trick, because it was the Changeling who died...

Loaner - So, where did the rocket pad and the rocket ship come from???

Scaly - I wonder what was so wrong with Neal's Guard Lizard that Stan Lee had Marie Severin redraw it??? Also, did she redo it on the cover as well??

Not A Team Player - Interesting that Reed is wearing a red four on his costume...

Sense Of Direction - Why focus mental energy on Death Valley when the X-Men are at the South Pole??

White Queen - The 1st app of Emma Frost perhaps...(p19,p4)

'Nuff Said - "You haven't a prayer of victory--"-Pro. X

I knew Morph from the '90s cartoon was based on Changeling, but I never knew the comic character was ever shown with the same face! (page 7, bottom left panel)

It doesn't annoy me so much by this stage that Xavier is a dick, I expect that from him. But why does he have to bring Jean down with him? Seriously, who orders someone to lie to their friends for months about their death simply so they won't be bothered? A do not disturb sign doesn't cut it with the X-Men apparently.

  Russ Says:
  2016-12-06 18:09:46
Well, I usually try to find a positive out of any issue in any title, because it is, after all, canon. And maybe sales on the X-Men were lagging and even the legendary run of Neal Adams on pencils wasn't helping sell books, so they had to try something, anything, to get people to buy the book. I get that. But no other issue, no matter how badly it sucked, made the entire integrity of the series implode more than this one.

Yeah, I get that death in the Marvel Universe isn't always permanent. We'll see this more than a few times in the X-Universe alone. But this one, just plain did not work for anything that could've helped the series in any way. They made an editorial decision to kill off Xavier, and they needed to stick with it. Especially with this story reversing that decision. Besides, the X-Men were finally coming into their own as a team, with a team identity, some solid storytelling, and great artwork. It could've been something in a few months if the status quo was left alone. The way I see it, cancelling the series and going to reprints after next issue was the last thing they could do to save face. Well, maybe other than just flat-out leaving the Professor, never to return.

And the story itself was horrible too. Alex and Lorna, like the others said, were way out of character. Jean lying about the professor; no wonder Warren and the others were pissed. And the Z'Nox threat? There was nothing to prepare for. Ugh. I never bought this issue, and I want my 15 cents back anyway.

1 star, and even that's too good for it. The decision to go to reprints smacked as more of a mercy-killing than anything. And after a travesty like this, we needed a whole new fresh start with an entirely new team. Even the original X-Men deserved better than being treated like this.

The first few pages were horrible and stupid. I liked the rest of the book though.

  benmason486 Says:

  Yay! The Professor lives!

Once again, communication is lacking: There is a world threat, maybe we could have a planning meeting or something.

An alien invasion defeated by humanity's compassion. That might be a bit harder today.

  Allencthulhu Says:

Three stars for the art. There are glimpses of what made O'Neil and Adams special, but this one didn't gel.

  7hm Says:

The story was bad but that art was worth it. This one feels like it suffers from the one and done rule.
