Issue Review

Solid second part brings this episodic adventure to a close on a tragic note.
Some well-worn ideas pop up (like the mad scientist-type creating various monsters) but they are well used here.

Despite all the crazy lab experiments walking around, I really liked this story.

I don't know. This story didn't really do it for me. It felt....kinda muddled.

  Redsvetz Says:

This seemed like a re-hash of The High Evolutionary story with The Super Beast. I didn't like it very much.

I really didn't like this at all. The narrative was so irritating.

  Wady Says:

The story had too much narrative init ant there where to many questions un answered I did have a feeling of being a little lost. It did remind me of the High Evolutionary where nothing ever makes sense.

Gerry Conway just needs to stop. So pretentious. But I guess that comes from precociousness. I hope his writing matures by the time he takes over ASM.

I remember a few months ago Namor went on a quest for his father, but that quest has been almost completely ignored since then

This story perfectly sums up my frustration with early Gerry Conway stories. There's some really good ideas there but everything around those good ideas is so incoherent that the whole story collapses...

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:

This should have lasted another issue. Some great concepts and ideas that never matured to what should have been.

Namor just isn't working outside of Atlantis. I'm not thrilled at all with the direction this comic has taken. Conway's writing here is trash as well.

  duncanm Says:

I thought it worked and was entertaining enough. My guess is they wanted to develop the side stories with Diane and Tuval before Namor made it to New England. Sure it was filler, but I was entertained.

I really liked some of the story elements, but it wasn't handled that well. I'm finding that to be the case for a lot of these early Conway stories. The ideas are interesting, but the execution fails.

I've begun just skipping any yellow boxes. Mostly useless blather.

2 stars for the frightened villagers of Starkburg storming Manor Serr!!!

Name Game - They added an extra "L" to Lucile now. Also, the way Namor kept repeating it, I thought he was going to start singing Little Richard's "Lucille"!!!

Strange Brew - If it wasn't for all of the Monsters, Starkburg would be a happening place with all those taverns!!

Timeline - The Father & Son robot thingies really seem out of place since they appear here before the Iron Man stories featuring Mr. Kline!!

Splash - Not only does Aunt Serr make monsters, but really crappy looking ones at that!!!

Durable - I know they don't appear again. But, I think Rock, and some of the other Monsters could've easily survived...

'Nuff Said - "Tell me, Spike--what does it look like? I never seen--!"-Curious Pops

Jesus Christ Conway, your stories are already pointlessly dense. Do you really need *four* freaking plotlines in your 19 page comic?

  Katryn Says:
  2017-01-21 00:57:38
I wouldn't have minded that if it wasn't that convoluted. I get it, Namor isn't the forgiving type, do you really need to tell me that with the biggest word count you can manage?

I almost feel bad for Shelly Leferman who had to letter this book. Not that he does comprehensibility any favors with his very awkward placement of word balloons and connectors.

You picked a fine time to leave us, Lucille. But we had a feeling you weren't completely under the thrall of the evil Aunt Serr.

The story seemed to be a rehash of several plots. The aforementioned High Evolutionary and the Super-Beast from Thor #134-135. The Minotaur from Iron Man #24. Probably a few others. Ultimately, the arc didn't cover any new ground and only put off Namor's father by a couple of issues.

By the way, did anyone notice that not a single drop of water touched Namor during this entire issue?

2 stars. I think Diane and Walter would make a decent couple.

Aunt Serr is at least trying to be a good mother. She's failing stupendously, but trying.
