Issue Notes

This is the end of Sub-Mariners own book. He will not have another stand alone title until 1984.

Steve Skeates had previously written on DC's Auquaman. His run in that series was abruptly canceled and so three years later he worked in elements of his final story there into this book. While not a crossover, anyone reading that story then this one will definitely see a connection.

When a gay couple randomly attacks Namor because they don't like his kind, you know you're in for something different. Unfortunately, the various elements of the story don't quite gel. It ends up as a slug-fest with pretensions because you keep getting pulled out of the issue by what Steve Skeates is doing. It's a pity. There are a lot of good ingredients here, and I wish I liked it more. 5/10

Who that man is? That's Aqua-Mariner or SubMarine-Man. Great Crossover (cause I believe it is one).

Its a way unofficial crossover of Aquaman

So long Namor. Can't really say I'm gonna miss this title. There were a few gems, but overall quite repetitive and tedious. Now that I think of it, kinda like "Lost."

I won't miss this title either. I like Namor much better as a part of a team book. He works better in smaller doses.

Well this sucked royally. Shame to end the book with such a lame story.

I kinda wish they would have ended this title with a better story, but I guess you can't really predict when you're gonna get cancelled.

I never followed Namor back in the day. I always thought he got cancelled after a handful of issues like SHIELD. There were some good stories and I enjoyed Bill Everett's run on it. Like JWC, I like my Subby in small doses and look forward to more Defenders, his Avengers period and Super-Villain Team-Up.

Namor's run had some ups and downs but I like how his character developed. Overall a decent read.

They never really resolved that whole "Atlantis in a coma" storyline from the previous issues.

So I guess between shacking up with a married woman and fighting slime monsters from space Namor stopped caring about his entire race being on the brink of death?

I sort of feel like Namor... I was blinded by reading this issue, but I didn't learn a cool moral. I feel gipped.

He FINALLY learned his lesson of what a hypocrite he is!? And then they end the series!? Well I'm hoping that the Atlanteans can be saved by a mixture of gamma radiation and magic so that Subby can stop acting like he doesn't want to be a Defender.
Really liked the art in this one. The use of shadows really sold the mood of the story. It would have been nice to know why that mood was there since Namor seemed pretty happy last time we saw him...but whatever.

I can't honestly say I got the point of this story. Namor gets smacked around by a couple of guys, does battle with some goofy looking alien, gets blinded then remembers he's always been a hot-headed jerk and voila! He can see again. Moral of the story: don't be a Namor.

And the first modern run of Sub-Mariner comes to an end. It lasted a lot longer than I thought it did, and we had some pretty good moments. Namor did actually evolve in this title although there were a few regressions. I did like the pro-ecological turn we had for a few issues there; kinda groundbreaking for its time and it didn't get preachy with it. Namor leaving Atlantis for awhile really helped break the cycle of overused plot devices. And the title can boast of a Marvel rarity: a major character that was killed and actually stayed dead (Lady Dorma). However, I do wish we could've seen other side players like Karthon of the Lemurians more often. Not to mention the relationships with Betty Dean (from the Golden Age) and Nita.

2 stars for the story and a final grade of C for the series. We didn't get a resolution to the "Atlantis In a Coma" storyline, but maybe it picks up in Namor's next appearance, which is in Captain America's mag. And yeah, Namor does work better in team mags or shorter series.

I'm saddened to see Namor go. I actually enjoyed this series. Too bad it had to end without any real resolution and a quote by Hitler. Fuck Hitler.

This was overly preachy, but the worst part is this just didn't seem like Namor. He flat out murdered that guy! Namor's a self-righteous jerk, but there's no way he'd murder some random guy who happened to be an arse to him.

This was awful. A terrible way to end the series.
