Issue Review

#13 is an epic-size story (with the Earth in danger from Nebulon) of the kind you'd see in Avengers or Fantastic Four, but it has a unique spin/feel of the kind only found in this book. Characters like Hulk and Namor (who don't really suit the team mentality) make everything seem cooler, just by being there. 8/10

Good action issue. I just can't get past Nighthawk horrible costume.

Yeah, let me violently break into your house and then insist you listen to me. That always works, right?

That was horrible. That was writing on a par with your average episode of "Super Friends".

Nighthawk has to be included in any list of worst costumes.

That stupid fake birdnose thing is what really kills it for me.

Other than that I give this 4 stars. Could have been 5, but that bird nose...

Took the words right out of my mouth. I say here for a good 5 minutes thinking about how to rate this issue.

  Defenders Hulk is best Hulk.
Why would Namor not wish to help his friends, or at the least hear them out? He has to have the worst mood swings of the Marvel Universe.

I like that Namor seems ashamed of his new costume.

So, because they weren't home before Nighthawk had to blow the door up? Did he think this would magically make them appear if they were out again?

I can't seem to get in the Squadron Sinister. And this is what, the third gold-skinned omni-Jesus Marvel has come up with? Warlock, the one from DD in SF, and I feel like I'm forgetting one.

  Russ Says:

Recommended listening for this issue: "The Man Who Sold the World" by David Bowie, or the pretty good cover version by Nirvana would work, too.

Of course, I'm tempted to write a new song for one of the issue's guest stars: "Nighthawk the Bird-Nosed Traitor!" Hey, with a face-mask like that, who'd take you seriously? I don't think even Adam West would be caught wearing something like that.

Then again, with the Squadron Sinister being obvious knock-offs of the Justice League, it's pretty hard to take all of them seriously. And the suppression of Dr. Spectrum's power prism's personality (try to say that five times fast) took away an extra dimension from that character; I enjoyed that prism's trash talking in the Iron Man arc. I also liked Nighthawk's insinuation that Whizzer is just plain bat-sh*t crazy.

3 stars. I wonder, what's Nebulon interesting in our little planet anyway? Does he see Earth as a fixer-upper? Maybe a little bed-and-breakfast place for passing alien ships fleeing Galactus?

I love that no matter where Namor goes, they have to comment on his pants. Because Namor wearing pants is that big a deal.

3 stars. I've been dreading this moment for awhile now. Nighthawk barging his way into the Defenders. Especially since everyone knows that real superheroes always crash through the window!!!!

Hulk Smash - I wonder if the Hulk could've eventually broke through the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak???

Laid An Egg - Ugh, Nighthawk's plane was originally called the Nightflyer. Now he's calling it the Hawk-Plane...

Full Spectrum - @Russ: I agree about the wasted opportunity of losing the power prism's personality. Mike Friedrich finally does something interesting, and Len Wein immediately tosses it out!!!

Waterlogged - And how would flooding the Earth hurt Atlantis???

'Nuff Said - "What do you need Nighthawk for that the three of you can't do with your superpowers?"-Nighthawk, and us readers as well...

Melting ALL of the ice on earth in one swoop would change the salinity of the ocean and could wipe out a good proportion of aquatic life.

I agree with Locust75. When the baddies' plan would raise sea levels and devastate the surface dwellers, calling in Namor seems like the *stupidest possible* move.

I'm really wondering why this feels so satisfying despite all the stupidity in the characters' motivations. I guess I've somehow become convinced that Nebulon is going to make it all sensible once he finally adds his two cents to the mess. And in the meantime, the hero interactions are pretty entertaining.

I love that Doc Strange is the sorta guy who will burn a whole evening stultifying his guests by showing off his magic tchotchkes. Bored Hulk and Bored Valkyrie on the top of P2 look and sound hilarious.
