Basic action-driven tale, with Magneto as one-note baddie. By-the-numbers superhero comics. So far, Nighthawk makes a bland addition to the team… (I miss Namor.) 5/10

Magneto: "Curses! Xavier and his cronies have somehow escaped my magnetic prison!" Nope. Still not a badass.

Why is the Defenders is consistently just average or slightly above average, regardless of writer? It seems that it ought to be more enjoyable but so far the chemistry hasn't been there. My guess is that it's Sal Buscema. His art is visually good, but with the Marvel style of writing the quality of the story is largely dependent on the artists ability to tell a good story with the lay outs.

How I long for a well-written Magneto. Also, it appears Nighthawk is useless, except for his power of money. On the plus side, his new costume is way better than the atrocious old one.

X-Men on a secret mission---I believe we're setting up for the first issue of Giant-Size X-Men.

Ah, the start of a long, proud tradition of Hulk taking care of Blob by ripping up the ground he's standing on.

It's good to see Dr Strange again. Valkyrie and Nighthawk, however, I do not recognize. Are they supers or what? It isn't really explained in this issue. I like how Doc one-ups Mastermind in the illusion department. And Hulk using his brain to defeat Blob was a nice touch as well.

Both valk and nighthawk have been in several defenders issues where their stories are well-explained:)

I am on a run of mediocre issues. Hope something picks up soon.

The X-Men off on a secret mission, eh? I bet all will be explained in the reboot that walks like a man...

Things are picking up. The only thing separating this issue from being good to being great was a bad Magneto. Put in the Magneto we all love and hate in this issue and we have an epic story.

+1 star for Unus being thrown at the Hulk. Otherwise, a pretty lack luster comic. Xavier is still kind of crappy without the X-Men.

Man, that are was straight out of the golden age, so little detail in a lot of the panels. That one of Lorelei on page 30 looks like a blow up doll.
As for the story, I liked it well enough. I still hate that Magneto is calling his Brotherhood "evil", but I guess that will be fixed in time.
The Defenders lineup is looking a little iffy at the moment, and if Valk is leaving then it's going to get worse. Strongest there is. Master of magic. Guy with a gold card.

I, too, am pleased that Nighthawk comes so well-equipped

I miss “Stupid Magician”

If an energy blast can knock The Hulk out it would probably kill everyone else

I think Magneto has blindly stumbled on powerful, abandoned machinery more than anyone else in the order

They thought themselves free of magnetic energy? I owe Len Wein a punch.

Barely earned the three stars I gave it, and that only out of sustained good will for the series.

Now Playing: "Kohoutek" The Sun Ra Arkestra

I gotta shake my head at this one. The Defenders have added one powerful member to their ranks. Does he have the power of super strength? Speed? Magic? Nope....he has the greatest power of all: MONEY!

Still not real thrilled seeing Professor X after his miracle "resurrection" from X-Men #65, but the mission he sent them on is the most interesting thing he brought to the table this issue. But while the X-Men make off for a secluded island, the Professor is making the Defenders do his dirty work. And Magneto's plan isn't even halfway intriguing to me; this looks like an unused script from the mid to late 60s.

@duncanm: I get your joke, but did you know? Much much better than the gold card is the black card! Costs $1000 a year just to possess that little piece of plastic versus $50 for the gold.

@dadoodoflow: Or, "Kohoutek" by REM isn't a bad choice either. Although Sun Ra has always played awesome jazz!

2 stars. Not bad but kinda blah and re-hashed. Magneto can come up with a way better plan than this.
