Lots of story in this one, plus a character back-story. And lots of good character moments. Great cliffhanger, too.
The sight of Mantis easily throwing the Avengers around is kinda shocking...
9/10

Interesting origin story. I'm not familiar with Mantis, but I am intrigued after this arc.

I think Swordsman is now officially my new favorite Avenger. Very layered characterization.
Mantis kicking the butt of the whole Avengers team was a surprise, one wonders the full scope of her power.

Wow, this issue got dark in a hurry at the end. I like the plot twists we've been getting in these issues, but the overall effect from reading them has been pretty middle-of-the-road, I think.

I think I'm in the "not really understanding the Mantis focus" camp. Not a fan of Heck's inks.

  Very misleading cover.

I like the origin story, even if it seems pretty basic given the powers Mantis has demonstrated so far. I'm still having a hard time believing she can manhandle the entire Avengers squad including Thor and Iron Man, however.

I also see a lot of similarities here between this temple and the one Flash Thompson found in the story arc in Amazing Spider-Man #107-108. For a minute there, I was starting to think Mantis and Sha Shan were the same girl! But how many lost temples are in Vietnam and Southeast Asia anyway? And how do we keep finding them?

3 stars. @jwerth is right; very dark ending, with quite a few deaths and one tortured Avenger.

Did Tony forget there that he can understand Vietnamese? I don't know how you forget you know a language. Plus, for all they're saying this is the Marvel age of continuity in one of the footnotes, last issue Swordsman was stuck at Avengers mansion and this issue he's suddenly at Taurus' lair. I call bull.

*THANK YOU* for pointing out the connection to ASM. I knew I had seen this plot before. Not only does the story read miles better in the Stan Lee original, the anonymous colorist back then knew better than to break out the "Jaundice Yellow" crayon when portraying Vietnamese characters.

3 stars. @Katryn: The Avengers left the Zodiac at the lair for the authorities, and then went to Avengers Mansion. (p2,p4-5)

Some of the inks look like they were done with a clenched fist wielding a Sharpie. Angry, sloppy strokes. Sort of like construction of this whole zodiac arc. I think Englehart is reserving his efforts for other titles, though maybe I'm wrong given others have pointed out his attachment to the Mantis. Perhaps I'm just not getting it.

I am looking forward to learning what's going on with the Vision. If I were to guess, it has something to do with the shadows of his past human identity casting darkly across his android mind; perhaps related to the way Power Man died? I can't remember how he died, but drowning would seem consistent with the situations where Vision is freezing up.
