Slug-fest. But it works. It's one of those brother-against-brother tales. And the foe is very interesting/sympathetic. 7/10

Great introduction to Shang-Chi. I wasn't too sure about the character, but Gerber and Starlin have put together an origin story that was much better than I'd expected.

great stuff, I'm tempted to start following Shang-Chi outside of my Order reading and read him without 10 issues of Daredevil & Zombie between each issue.

I was actually hoping Midnight would stick around. He was an interesting character.

Loved the story, but there was some painful dialogue at points: "Hey you! With the hair on your head!" "But I must no longer think of boys!" "Boy, am I going to get the horselaugh back at the station."
Not sure I buy Shang-Chi as a hero... at this point he's a cold blooded murderer, and he beat up the cop that tried to collar him. At least he didn't pull the nun-chucks on him.

Englehart and Starlin make a heck of a team. These last two issues are something special.

Starlin seems to be infusing Marvel with some much needed quality and creativity.

Good follow-up to last issue. I kinda hope Midnight comes out of his "fatal" injury because he's a pretty good adversary to Shang-Chi, and I liked the way he was rocking the "pulp" look. The two issues here set up an excellent premise going forward; the cynic in me wonders how soon it'll fall apart like it did in Werewolf, Dracula, etc.

However, I had to chuckle at page 30 where Shang-Chi was narrating how he never used his hands to destroy (as in kill), when he murdered Dr. Petrie last issue. Steve Englehart is on point most of the time, but I wonder who proof-read this.

3 stars. Glaring errors aside, it's a pretty good start for the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu. Here's hoping the quality stays up there.

Note: for those who were wondering, Special Marvel Edition was a quarterly reprint title for its first 14 issues: #1-4 featured Thor, and #5-14 had Sgt. Fury.

It's amazing what not putting words over all your artwork can do. That fight was great.
