Issue Review

The main thrust of this is a battle. One long battle, where the hero is attacked and must defend himself.
The framing sequence, where a tutor of the hero recounts the story, is the most interesting part.
But otherwise it's just a battle. And, at 15 pages, it's about 5 pages too long.
6/10

The Sons of the Tiger are of conveniently different ethnicities... Caucasian, Chinese, and Black. I dunno, that's not very inspired!

The Shang-Chi's flashback was great and the Sons of Tiger introduction was interesting. Unfortunately, I can see this whole Kung Fu thing getting repetitive and boring quite fast.

I didn't know Dick Giordano did any work for Marvel! That is a very pleasant surprise.

The Shang-Chi story was good. The Sons of the Tiger was lame. They got stronger and more skillful because they held hands and recited a chant they never had the time to practice or discuss prior to the fight? I will give it a couple more tries, but if it keeps on going like that I will just skip them.

Today, I learned that when I'm in the fight of my life, to just hold my comrades hands and sing Eye of the Tiger.

I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff. The cheese of the second story wasn't enough to detract from what was cool.

Had fun with both stories. The first was a nice way to flesh out the characters and their relationships. The second I apparently liked more than everyone else, though I was hoping that the tiger thing would be more than just make them stronger. Maybe I'm too spoiled by the likes of Voltron, Power Rangers, and Captain Planet, but when a racially diverse group of people join their powers I at least expect a costume change.

I'll be interested to see how long Marvel can stick to the true statement of "the proper way to fight is without speaking."

  - I know Giordano can draw, even though Iím more familiar with him as an inker and an editor, but Iíve never seen him look so Neal Adamsy

-Marvel Unlimted doesn't have the Shang-Chi backup, actually the whole site is scrubbed pretty clean of any Shang-Chi. I think they want me to buy the recently released omnibus which if I could read the issues and found them good I probably would.

Either Steve Englehart didn't inform Jim Starlin that Shang-Chi was only supposed to be fourteen in this story or Jim Starlin has somehow never seen a 14-year-old boy.

Fun little story. Shang-Chi's reaction was priceless: "This was....a test?" I don't blame him; I never did well at pop quizzes either.

3 stars, but I wish this could've taken more advantage of the magazine format.

One guy got his arm pretty much cut off, another got slammed head first into a stone column and didn't move again. I'd call that a good start. Very sudden ending though, I turned the page looking for more story.

These early Shang-Chi stories are tricky because Marvel only had a temporary lease on the rights to Fu Manchu. They might make one-time arrangements to do a special print edition, but it would be cost-prohibitive to secure the rights in perpetuity for Marvel Unlimited.
