A very basic story, and a lot of fighting.
The Ka-Zar scenes are okay. He's still a big, dumb clod but watching him in battle is interesting. And Bobbi Morse returns to the series, and impresses.
The weakness lies with the villains. An old foe returns and is granted powers early in the story. A lot of powers. And then he reaches out to, and enlists, another Marvel villain. It's all a bit random and perplexing. The writer doesn't bother explaining any of this, it just happens, or even why the two villains are working together. They just are.
4/10

I thought recycling Daredevil foes was a bad idea, but recycling this X-Men villain is even worse!

His new god-like mind searched the world for the perfect assistant and the best he could do was a cheesy X-Men villain. I'd say those god powers need some work.

"Mi Dios!" "Precisely." That line almost makes me forgive Mike Friedrich some of his many, many narrative sins in this issue and elsewhere. Almost, but not quite.

Ouch, this was rough... but it's Ka-zaragoza its only going to get better right?

This was a pretty fun read despite the lame villains.

Funny, the way the Order is currently the X-Men's first run ended long ago, but in this issue it says "recently in X-Men". Just lets you know just how many stories there really are to get through. And I find myself missing those misfits.
So the mysts made Zabu live long and made Ka-Zar a little stronger, but then this guy comes around and it basically turns him into a god. I'd say the good guys got screwed on that one.
And Bobbi Morse outta nowhere. Which is a good thing since I find her more interesting than Ka-Zar.

From the sublime to the ridiculous. This would be a rough story regardless, but coming after Panther's Rage doesn't do this one any favors.

I think they're saying "recently" because the X-Men stories were in reprints at that point and the El Tigre story had recently been republished. Otherwise, 1966 to 1974 really is a long time by comic book standards!

Feline controlling powers? God-like mind couldn't come up with a better power.

Ick. I think the Panther's Rage run has recalibrated my ranking system to be less forgiving. Swoosh Don Heck art is not a good look, and no coherence with what the "Man-God" is supposed to be.

I agree this one was kind of fun, even if it seemed like I've read this many many times before. It was a new spin on Maa-Gor; I'm guessing they ran out of ideas for a low intelligence man-ape being that doesn't say much, or they thought he was becoming boring.

A few other notes.....

Unknown Tales of the X: El Tigre's appearance was actually in X-Men #25-26 (October-November 1966), reprinted in X-Men #73-74 (December 1971-February 1972), for those of you keeping score. The most recent publication of X-Men in relation to this story is X-Men #87. Most titles in the Order are already into 1975 or very close. Not too much longer before the new team debuts, gang!

Just picked this name out of a hat: Maa-Gor becomes a god-like being and his first thought is to get El Tigre as a henchman? I think his god-like omniscience was still developing at the time!

Not Following Doctor's Orders: Funny, Zabu wasn't hampered by his injuries at all during the events of Marvel Team-Up #19.

The Good Old Days: The "energy crisis" Bobbi mentions on page 22 sent gas prices skyrocketing to 55 cents a gallon in the US!

Higher quality catnip: El Tigre can control Zabu? Hey, he could open a legitimate business; an obedience school for housecats!

2 stars. Seems weird to see Bobbi again after Ka-Zar's run-in with Shanna. Could we be looking forward to another sort of cat fight in the near future?

Just because Maa-Gor got smarter, doesn't mean he suddenly knows what biochemistry is. Unless those mists also gave him a high school education. In which case, why are they bothering with the oil? Bottle that stuff!

It boggles the mind that this was published AFTER Panther's Rage. I am reading these side by side because they were released together on MU and this issue feels a decade behind.
