A Ka-Zar case-of-the-week type adventure, but it has Spider-Man and it's fun to read. 6/10

Issue Synopsis

Spider-Man is on a SHIELD transport plane over the Antarctic. Reaching his destination, he leaps out, forming a parachute out of webbing to slow his descent. As he drifts towards the ground he recalls the events that have brought him here:

Responding to a call from Dr. Connors, Spider-Man turned up at the manís lab. Connors explained how he had been working for SHIELD conducting experiments in cell-generation on dinosaur tissue. The tissue had been supplied by Ka-Zar, Lord of the Hidden Jungle. Connors had been assisted in the experiments by Dr. Vincent Stegron. Unfortunately Stegron became obsessed by the idea that if lizard extract could turn a man into a lizard, then dinosaur extract should be able to turn a man into a dinosaur. Stegron had stolen the dinosaur extract and fled with it to Ka-Zarís Savage Land. Spider-Man had agreed to go to the Savage Land to try to find Stegron and bring him back.

Spider-Man touches down in the Savage Land and is almost immediately attacked by a dinosaur. He disables it with his webbing, but more dinosaurs appear, this time far more than he can handle. However, help is at hand in the form of Ka-Zar and his companion Zabu, the sabertooth tiger. Together, the three of them drive off the dinosaurs.

Spider-Man tells Ka-Zar about his hunt for Stegron and Ka-Zar replies that heís heard that Stegron now calls himself Lord of the Long-Tails and lives in the village of the swamp-men. Before they can go there, however, they are attacked by swamp-men and clubbed into unconsciousness.

On awaking, Spider-Man, Ka-Zar and Zabu find themselves bound in front of the Temple of the Lizard King. Stegron stands before them, transformed into man-dinosaur. Stegron reveals his plan to rule the World with the help of the dinosaurs.

After a struggle, Ka-Zar manages to free himself from his bonds and fights his way through the swamp-men to free Spider-Man. Spider-Man in turn frees Zabu and the three flee the camp.

Stegron, meanwhile, has made his way through the jungle to a huge transportation platform. He summons dinosaurs to the platform, intent on using them in his conquest of the World. Before all of the dinosaurs can be loaded onto the platform, Spider-Man and his two companions arrive. Stegron commands the dinosaurs not yet on the platform to stampede towards the village of the swamp-men.

While Spider-Man tackles Stegron, Ka-Zar tries to head off the stampede. Leading the stampede is a huge tyrannosaurus. Ka-zar leaps onto the creatureís back and, after a fight, manages to kill it. Then, with Zabuís help, the stampede is turned and the village saved.

Stegron fends off Spider-Man, stunning him and knocking him to the ground beside the platform. Stegron then launches the platform, intending to take the dinosaurs that have boarded it to America and attack New York. Using a pterodactyl as a stepping stone, Spider-Man manages to attach his webbing to the underside of the platform.

The issue closes with the platform on its way to New York with Spider-Man swinging beneath it.

I want to like this. I love dinosaurs! So that's exactly why I don't like this: I hate the way the dinosaurs were portrayed, both when it comes to their behavior and their looks.

The repetitiveness of MTU annoys me slightly. They create new boring villains (Stegron, Basilisk) and then find a ludicrous way to implicate Spider-Man. And to top it all, they let these stories stagger through two issues each.

You'd think that Connors would have had more sense than to allow someone called 'Dr Stegron' to get his hands on dinosaur tissue. There was no way this was going to end well!

The only thing that annoyed me is that Stegron spoke like a snake. He's a blasted dinosaur man, not a snake man! Sheesh!

So do dinosaurs understand English? Stegron was giving them a rousing speech, and Ka-Zar killed that T-Rex because it didn't listen to him.
Isn't Spider-Man technically still a wanted fugitive? I don't see how SHIELD would be so quick to transport him out of the country.
Considering the results of Connors' lizard research, why would he use it as the basis for dino research with SHIELD?

Marvel Two-in-One really puts this book to shame. There we get an interesting perspective on the Thing thats different from what we see in FF. Marvel Team-Up is just a boring version of Amazing Spider-Man.

Cotton candy story that doesn't even seem to fit 616 canon.

I have so far not enjoyed a single story starring Ka-Zar. Just what in the world do People find interesting about that character?

Personally, I think his hypersexualized adventures are amusing.

Well, to be honest it might have simply been my frustration speaking. I feel like there has been a drought of good stories after the Thanos stuff. I looked it up and found out that I've rated some Ka-Zar issues three stars, which is good enough. I'm not expecting to ever give him four or five but I definitely wouldn't mind being proven wrong.

Actually, the problem I have with Marvel Team-Up is that the stories seem to put Spider-Man waaaaay out of his element. Going into the future, stopping dinosaur invasions, that's stuff for other heroes. I get that this title is supposed to showcase Spider-Man working with other heroes, but I have a very hard time believing these stories are canon.

That said, again, this is goofy fun but little else. Finding Stegron right off, the dinosaur ark conveniently placed "where they said it would be" (whoever "they" are), they sure crammed a lot of odd plot points to keep the story moving.

2 stars. I do remember having a large treasury edition of Spider-Man as a kid, which reprinted MTU #13, 19, 20 and 21. This brings back a few memories, but it's interesting to reread this with an adult perspective.

No one knows that Dr Connors is the Lizard other than Spider-Man. So SHIELD is handing their dinosaur research to an outside source who for all they know has failed miserably in his own research. That makes sense.
