Fast-moving average comic.
We learn the villain's backstory/goals and see how the a-story and b-story are connected, but it's strictly by-the-numbers stuff.
6/10

What's the point of having Spidey get sick all the time?

Featuring: an asbestos mask! Ideal for that supervillain with the melting face, who needs to hide from a superhero. Order one now, at 1-800-asbestos!

I really found the mystery of what was wrong with Liz Allen being tied in with this rather lame Molten Man story as very disappointing. At first when they brought her back I thought, maybe some really cool stories are going to follow that justified killing Gwen Stacy. Now I really doubt that will be the case. Just more fairly mediocre writing for ASM. Stan Lee is really missed on this book at this point in the order.

Well, I see the shoot first mentality of cops existed back in the 70s also. Spidey should get the NYPD to wear body cameras.

Liz Allen returns after 9 years and more than 100 issues just to be the sister of the stupid Molten Man? Terribly disappointing, which is getting to be typical from Conway.

What's with all the Molten Man hate? I thought this one was good and he made a pretty sympathetic villain. Not sure what his beef with Ned is, but I can let it pass.
So happy to see that radiation poisoning can now apparently be cured with a few hours of sleep.
Molty was pretty messed up looking by the end of this issue, which was pretty surprising since this mag was one of the most popular with kids.

In a year in which we've already seen the Thanos War, Panther's Rage, Englehart's Secret Empire arc in Captain America, and strong debuts from Shang Chi and Iron Fist, Spidey has really fallen from consistently being one of Marvel's best titles. The lousy brand-dilution in Marvel Team-Up doesn't help either.

Wow, even the supermaterial asbestos wasn't enough to the heat in. Does that mean that Molten Man is hotter than the Human Torch?

I don't get the hate against the molten man? I find him quite interesting with a existential problem and I really like Ross Andru! For me he is the classic artist on SM. The one I grew up with and he draws the most beautiful MJ...

A lot of those conversation bubbles from Spiderman should have been thought bubbles. Actually they didn't even need to be on the pages.

Well, the way Molten Man was injuring people and grabbing stuff, I don't have that much sympathy for him. But maybe that was the intention, and Conway simply conveyed it wrong (wouldn't be the first time in his career). I agree Molty has some potential, but in this arc he was simply off his rocker, and his evolving powers were merely turning him into a Human Torch who can't fly.

The connection to Liz might be something worth playing a little more down the road, though. It was cool seeing her again in this arc; Ross Andru gave her a bit of a retro look here, like a character from the 50s.

3 stars. Amazing Spider-Man is a good book; it hasn't fallen that far. But we're in between major arcs so there's not a lot happening right now. I think that changes real soon.

I don't think the problem was with Molten Man as a character, just with the writing. He spent half the issue trying to kill Ned for reasons unknown then oh wait, better fix that whole dying thing. Add in that everything was well and truly overwritten and you've got another reason why I don't like Conway.
