Action-packed, and story-packed. Roy Thomas brings old characters (Whizzer/Miss America) into the mix (directly and indirectly) and ties them into the backstory for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. All the while sending the rest of the team into battle on a case-of-the-week type adventure (Nuklo). 7/10

This was a surprisingly good issue. Definitely one of the best issues of Avengers that Roy Thomas wrote in over 70 issues.

Rich Buckler makes me sad. It's not that he is so bad, it's just that he is such a poor mam's Kirby he makes me long for the original King.

This was a pretty cool issue. Spoiler: I always thought that Magneto was Pietro and Wanda's father...

I think there's some retcon to come with the story of their birth. Which retroactively makes the conclusion of this story nonsense. But, that's not Thomas's fault.

It's not worth it to dwell on who Wanda and Pietro's parents are. It changes all the time. My question is, how did Wanda know that Whizzer was her father? I didn't see anything to tip it off other than his speed being like Quicksilver, but by that logic Johnny and Sue Storm had an android for a father.
"In a world he never made!" Please stop using this! What the heck is it even supposed to mean? Nobody makes their own darn world!

This was one of the most Roy Thomas stories I've ever read.

This felt like a Jim Shooter Legion story

In all of modern comicdom, nobody treats the Golden Age with as much reverence as Roy Thomas. When he taps into comic history is when he's at his best, story and plotting wise. He proved it with the Kree-Skrull War when he referred to obscure events that few people at the time noticed (like the mysterious disappearance of the 4th Skrull from Fantastic Four #2), to this story which attempts to further plug holes in Marvel history prior to Reed Richards's ill-fated flight into space.

So are Wanda and Pietro really the offspring of the Whizzer and Miss America? The story strongly hints at it, but doesn't solidly confirm it, if you read the narration carefully. However, future retcons aside, this was one of Marvel's more important stories of the 70s, and Roy and Co. pulled it off magnificently.

And there's even more of a nod to the past. You have a threat in some nutty monster that would've fit in almost any late-Atlas-period mag. Then there was the way the Avengers tackled him; splitting up into individuals and/or small teams to fight one aspect of the threat, then coming together to nip the case in the bud once and for all. It's how it was handled in the two All-Winners Squad adventures, not to mention the entire Justice Society run at the time.

4 stars. Clearly a labor of love for Roy here. But, I bet when that midwife's parents first saw her, they probably had a cow! Errr, I mean, never mind.

In the MU version, it says mind-boggoling on the front cover. That sort of spelling mistake kind of makes me laugh. In a I wish I could go back and spell check for them kind of way.

Truly awful. One thing we don't need at this point in the order is regression back into golden age garbage.
