#181 is famous for the Hulk/Wolverine battle, but the highlight is really the strong/tragic Wendigo story. The Herb Trimpe/Jack Abel art makes the Hulk look HUGE. 9/10

So there it is. The first appearance of ol' Wolvie. That aside, it's actually a decent lil arc relative to the monotony of most Greenskin tales.

This was great more for Wendigo and Georges sacrifice than the fact that it was first Wolverine (IMO). Also, this has one of the best covers I've ever seen on a comic book.

Ah, well there you go. Wolverine's famous catchphrase is "I'm the best at what I do... but I what I do isn't very nice."

Well, according to page 2 of this, what he does best is "moving".

Really enjoyed this. Agree with what has been said above, Wolverine is pretty incidental in these two issues.. but the overall story with the Wendigo is really good. Very moving.

Great little arc. Wein is definitely finding his stride with the Hulk.

With a little work, they might make something out of this Wolverine guy.

  Touching little ending there.

Something else? Oh yeah. Wolverine was nice.

Hulk good. Comic good. Best Hulk comic I've read so far.

Oh Wolvie, how I've missed you. Marvel feels a lot more proper now that you are here :P
(Yup, wolverine was my very first favorite comic book hero).

I was excited to read this. Even though it turned out to be just an average story, I am excited to see what is in store for Wolverine next.

Wow, dat Wolverine dialogue. Only thing that saved that from 1 star was Hulk being Hulk, which always makes I laugh.

Interesting how the most iconic Marvel hero (not counting Spiderman) started as a one-off lame villain.

Dear God, Wolvie is horrible in this issue.

I think they always planned on bringing him back. They started planting the seeds of his backstory here.

Wolverine wasn't a villain, he was a government trained hero trying to stop Hulk from tearing the place up. And I agree that they didn't think of him as a one-off character, as a mutant being introduced this close to the return of the X-Men can't be a coincidence.
It's interesting to see that pretty much everything that makes up Wolverine as we know him is here, but hasn't been given the proper polish yet. From his claws not being retractable, and one would have to assume probably part of his gloves rather than internal, to his superhuman "stamina" rather than his healing factor, it's all a little bit off, but a great base to move forward from.
And with all that being said, this was really the Wendigo's comic. You could have taken out Wolverine and Hulk and it still would have made for a greatly compelling story.

A very underwhelming issue saved a bit by the Wendigo-conclusion. Really didn't like the art for the Hulk vs Wolverine-slugfest.

In all my years, I have never read this one before.

I was surprised to see such a compelling conclusion to the Wendigo story arc, with Georges' sacrifice, with even Marie saying his debt wasn't that high. The poor guy. Very noble indeed.

As for Wolverine, it was cool to see his appearance here. I started reading him right after, with Giant Size X-Men #1, and even there his character is changed significantly, and then again once Claremont takes over.

That's one of the great things about reading through the Order though... Seeing the seeds of various characters planted, and then watching them bloom and grow in the fertile imaginations of later writers, some of whom were former fans and readers themselves.

  Russ Says:

That was a pretty unexpected and dark ending. Marie's character did kinda take one on the chin, but she did end up with what she wanted in the end. Sometimes you gotta be careful about what you say and do; you can't predict the consequences otherwise.

But that little yellow guy? He can scrap, that's for sure. Maybe he's got a future for Marvel after all! Seriously, yeah Wolverine's character is a little off here but most of what we know is already in place. His background, his fighting skill, and he's been identified as a mutant. I don't know if the plans were already in motion to revive the X-Men were rolling when this story came out, but the seeds were definitely planted as far as Wolverine goes. Just too bad he seemed more cursory to the story than anything.

4 stars. Not the greatest start to a legend, but still pretty good overall.

This is one of those great moments in the Order, because you can read it how it would have been at the time, which was really more of a follow up to the Wendigo story from a couple of years ago, and with future knowledge of where Wolverine goes. And really, that's why I'm here at all.

  Wolverine: ALL--THE--YELLOW--SPANDEX!

Throughout 1974 we've been getting darker stories and not just in the Dracula/Werewolf/Frankenstein/Man-Thing books.

We've had Doctor Strange versus a religious fanatic AND Death.

We've had the tragic story of the Molten Man.

We've had one of the early Thanos sagas.

Pretty much, '74 has been the best year Marvel has had since about '68.

Three stars.
