Otherwise ordinary action tale is lifted by the Hulk's friendship with an old man, who teaches him to write. Sad ending. All the coincidences, particularly the alien who just appears out of nowhere and gives the bad guys their powers, are what stop me from enjoying the issue more. 7/10

A random alien visitation is always a sign for a poor issue!

Now that's a fun issue. It has an alien, it has odd-couple villians, it has action, it has heart, it has Wolverine (briefly), and the Hulk learns how to spell. You can't ask for much more than that.

This was a good issue but a bit depressing at the end. Hulk learning to spell and then using that knowledge was powerful.

I find it interesting to see the writers trying to write Canadian. I wonder if they just assumed, that everyone here uses British words and measurements.

The alien was really annoying in this, but I liked everything else.

The alien was useless, the villains uninteresting, but the friendship and the emotionally filled ending redeemed this issue.

Damn good story. Crackajack would have made a great regular. And I want the Hulk on beans in his next movie.

Crackajack was awesome. He had a lot of good dialogue. I liked the traveler's tale format of this issue.

Strange that the alien came from nowhere to give these convicts their power. Decent story, but the villains were lame. I was more interested in what that alien was all about. Wonder if Hulk will remember how to write.

Take away the villains and alien and this is a 4 star story. The ending was perfect.

Other than the opening captions telling us how racist and hateful the two baddies are, we never really see it. They seem to get along really well.
I guess Crackajack was an okay character, but I was continually cringing due to the minstrel show style speaking he employed. Even in the 70s I've got to think that sounded wrong.

The alien stuff was silly, but the relationship of Hulk and Cracker jack, and the obvious emotion from the Hulk was really well done and heartbreaking.

The only other time I read a story with Hammer & Anvil was a John Byrne Hulk story in Marvel Fanfare. It was all splash pages which was cool. They met The Scourge which was even better.

Kind of a sweet little rapport that developed between the Hulk and Crackerjack. Sad that it ended the way it did, but that means we get these reminders that the Hulk isn't always all anger and rage; he can grow attachments to people and feels the loss when something happens to them. It's an oft-overlooked trait.

So the Hulk likes beans, eh? He's probably figuring that eating enough of them will enable him to respond to these puny humans with a gas attack of his own!

And the brief time we see Wolverine here seems to have him a bit out of character. Instead of pleading with his bosses about his failure, I thought he'd be more "So I let him go. You pick up the pieces, I'm goin' to the bar; screw you!" But that's ok; at risk of giving up a spoiler, I think he quits his job in his next appearance.

3 stars. A 2-star story gets an extra star for the poignant ending. Hammer and Anvil are meh villains and the alien that gave them their powers didn't stick around for any length of time to make his existence worthwhile.

What everyone else said - eh villains but a great relationship between Hulk and Crackajack.

  Mongo likes beans!

Actually, I kinda wish this had been a crap issue instead of a sad one.

Three stars.

Such a weird and odd issue. Crackajack and Hulk's relationship really reminded me of Frankenstein's Monster and the old man. Like what others said, this could have been bad but the heart saved it.
