Watch out! It's an all-engulfing SONIC SPONGE!

Quite easily the weakest FF annual yet, but still pretty solid all around.

So cosmic radiation will kill you specifically and precisely the moment you give birth? That makes no sense even by 60's Marvel logic.

  skalchemist Says:

Right, I was in tears at the end of that one. FF is transcends all the other Marvel books because it is about a family, not just a team, and even though they struggle with each other and act like jackasses to each other (I'm looking at you, Reed) the love is always there.

A classic FF tale, exploration, adventure and a powerful villain.

Is it just me who thought it was weird that Reed waited outside rather than being with his wife for the birth?

Ben reading a newspaper about War in Asia, then the peace and brotherhood line... Interesting to see Stan starting to reflect the changing feelings about the war. 1968 and showing. Also I think the dad waiting outside the delivery room was kind of a way things happened in earlier times.

actually Jfpj it was more like 18 months (i checked) so Marvel Time must have started in the womb.......

Robaraid...... I'd have to check but that might be a sign of the times......

So all this and no one mentions the awesomeness that is Annihilus.... this villian is great.....

Robareid, definitely part of that era. Fathers didn't go into the delivery room.

Johnny Storm, ya know, you'd have been an uncle even if Sue had a girl. I about laughed my arse off when he said "that means...I'm an uncle!" After finding out it was a boy.

I'm very interested to see where this title goes now. I have no idea how Sue's going to be a fighting member of the team with that baby around, unless she stays on the sidelines like she has for the past year.

The two page spread was crazy! It always surprises me when Kirby goes cut and paste. It doesn't seem like his style. Anyway, I think this is one of my favorite FF issues that Ive read.

4 stars for the 1st app of Annihilus & Baby Franklin!!!

Heavy Handed - You know it's going to be a good issue when Reed goes into jerk mode!!

Realistic - @Johnny Darkness: I agree, awesome spread indeed!!!

Brainiacs - Funny scene of Johnny & Ben having to think on their own without Reed!!

DOH! - I love the look on Annihilus's face when Reed first punches him! (p14,p1)

Sock It To Me - I guess you can say that Annihilus...got the boot! Okay, okay, so I'm no gloomyharvester!!!

Yakety Yak - I think it would've been better if the Borers just talked you to death! While showing you a slideshow of their vacation pics!!!

Pimp My Ride - I like Annihilus's Double Barrel Gun-Ship!

Ham - Thing's best line is him telling Reed to give the Control Rod back to Annihilus so it will shut him up!!

'Nuff Said - "He wants this...he needs it...more than anything else in all the world! But Sue needs it, too!"-Confused Reed

1. Negative Zone stories are always awesome
2. Krazy Kirby Kollage
3. First sight of Annihilus
4. Franklin Richards
5. Giant Monty Python Boot

You'd think doctors would have been queuing up for months to study the FF given the whole cosmic radiation thing, but no, let's wait until Sue is about to pop.

  GroovyGolem Says:

I like that the FF annuals have substance to them... event-driven stories that impact the monthly storyline and not just a super-size issue. This is a perfect example.

When I was a little kid I had an issue with Annihilus. I didn't know the word "Annihilate" yet and so I thought his name was pronounced "Ani-HILL-us". So of course, he has a special place in my heart. I didn't know his first appearance was in Annual #6!

I loved all the splash pages in this issue, especially Pg32 when the cosmic shield gets blasted.

And yes, the poignant ending was a bold anti-war statement about world peace for the sake of its future generations. An interesting 180-degree turn from earlier stories as the Vietnam war raged on in 1968.

Pretty action-packed story. The struggle to get out of the Negative Zone wasn't particularly tension-filled, but I did detect a slight sense of urgency given the circumstance. However, I still get a little confused when it comes to the adventures in the Negative Zone. I get the feeling Stan and Jack are still mapping it out as they go along.

And it did seem like everything was telegraphed through the course of the story too. As soon as we were introduced to Annihilus and his Cosmic Control Rod, you just knew what was going to happen. It was a little bit of a surprise to see Reed snag it so quickly, though. But it did seem like obstacle after obstacle the group dealt with to get out of there was done to draw the story out. It made it drag a little.

However, it was all worth it. We finally get to meet the little guy! And I forgot to bring the cigars! Oh well, he doesn't smoke yet anyway.

It was definitely the mark of the CCA that Sue's giving birth wasn't the difficult process the build-up to this story made it out to be. If this were told today, we'd be subjected to more of the ordeal Sue had to go through, with her cosmic-ray induced illness making for a difficult birthing process. I think that would've made a better story than this one, if it were allowed to be told.

Still, 4 stars. We get a classic villain, and a new baby! Pretty sweet! But if the baby had been a girl, what would Johnny say? "That means I'm an au-- err, wait a minute....what would that make me? Hmmmm, let me consult this book from Reed's library a minute....."

You need to forgive a little bit of Silver Age hokiness (Negato-gun, Cosmic Control Rod of Convenience, assorted antimatter silliness), but otherwise a really strong issue.
