Issue Review

First two-thirds focuses on each team-member in turn, giving each character some quality time in the spot-light. Then, in the final third, something odd happens and there's a bit of action, leaving us with a hint of a future threat. Pretty much perfect. 9/10

Man, that ape guy just does not work for me.

Nice use of golden age characters to settle a story to be concluded... in 10 issues according to the next appearance tag!

Story was alright. Villains were lame.

The title is lame and almost a sexual innuendo.

Loved this! A guy whos apes transplanted his head onto an ape body. The guy with the melty face. Hulk playing jump rope with some little kids. This issue was awesome.

Agree with butters, there's a difference between being lame and just having fun with a story. If all stories are super-serious it gets boring.
I thought the villains were fun too. Sure they're a little goofy, but considering all the bodies that were splattered on the ground from people jumping, they've got one of the highest body counts among Marvel villains.
Bad issue to be Val though, she gets her butt kicked emotionally and physically.
They never really did give an explanation as to why the three Defenders were the only people not affected. Maybe it's explained later?

I don't think the three Defenders were the on,y people unaffected, I think it just affected people who were sleeping at the time. And I thought this was great stuff - both for the character moments and for the fact that the bad guys actually get away at the end.

I wonder if Nagan is pronounced "noggin," in keeping with the head theme.

So, Nighthawk is officially the Hawkeye of the group, right? Actually pretty impressive that he managed to be the biggest jerk in a group that sometimes includes Namor.

When you read a story that can only be described as ludicrous, yet somehow it works, you can bet that Steve Gerber wrote it. Especially the guy with his head on a gorilla's body; he may actually be an Atlas-era creation that was written just for a shock ending, but Gerber actually found a decent use for him. And the rest of that motley crew of scientists is right out of the early Silver Age. They should be downright lame, but they aren't. I can see them giving the Defenders fits for a little while.

Another interesting use of an obscure character; who knew that Egghead's niece dated Nighthawk at one time? Ugh, I hope it doesn't mean a Hank Pym appearance in these pages anytime soon.

3 stars. A nice little mystery for the Defenders brewing in the near future.

There's Stan Lee weird, and then there's Steve Gerber weird. Gerber weird has a purpose, however absurd, and it can be outlandish and stupid and still somehow be completely readable and entertaining, provided he doesn't get too wordy. This issue is Gerber's style at it's best. While Gerber often, especially when writing Howard, generates unreadable wordy diatribes, he doesn't do any of that here. I am hoping it stays that way for this run.
